Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5 Review: What You Don't Know

at .  Updated at .

Secrets can only be kept for so long.

Will's time hiding things from Nat almost ran out on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5. It probably would have been better for him if it actually had. The longer you keep a secret, the more lies you have to tell, and the bigger the fallout.

Refusing Treatment - Chicago Med

Will is headed towards a serious danger zone with his lies to Nat. Some of them may be necessary, but he started lying to her well before he was tapped as a CI.

More annoying than the lying may be WIll's "poor me" attitude about the whole thing. In a franchise populated with heroes willing to sacrifice for the greater good, here's a guy whining about being asked to help take down a suspected murderer.

It just doesn't fit into the ethos of #OneChicago.

But the lying is a problem, and not the first that this relationship has experienced. It's never a good sign when your friend's response to a problem is, "What did he do now?"

The curious thing is that Nat's been married before, to a guy we have to assume was a good husband and partner. She should have some idea what a healthy relationship looks like and the ability to recognize that it's not what she has with Will.

Maggie: Was it as awkward as I imagined?
Nat: Father Brady was a doll. Will on the other hand...
Maggie: What did he do now?

Despite that, the only way Will's behavior is likely to be a complete dealbreaker is if it in some way endangers Owen.

It's frustrating, but the social media team has invested far too much time in this hashtag relationship for it to go any other way.

Even if they break up, it's likely only to be a temporary thing. As long as both Torrey DeVitto and Nick Gehlfuss are attached to the cast, we have to assume that #Manstead is the endgame.

Pre-Cana - Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5

The same might not be true for Choi and April. They do spend all their time together, much like our leading couple, but it's hard to tell if they're ever going to fall back into a romance.

That might depend on how Emily and her baby-daddy situation turns out.

Bernie's deception has further reaching consequences than Emily may realize. They met in AA, and somehow he's never talked about how his alcoholism impacted his wife and daughter?

If he's not being honest in his recovery, this isn't going to be his only relapse. And that's not good for Emily or her baby. Or Ethan and April. Let's be real, what are the chances that they end up with this baby?

It would be an almost direct rip off of an early ER arc, but that's never stopped the Med writers before. It's plausible that April would be thrilled to raise that child, but Ethan's likely to feel differently.

The possibility of Emily abandoning her baby brings up an aspect of this story that hasn't been explored nearly enough: Emily's own adoption.

Big Brother Choi - Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5

Digging into that, and how it affects her desire to keep the kid or her panicking at the thought of motherhood, would give this arc a hell of a lot more meat.

Bernie's other family is soapy and not all that surprising once you think about it. The most intriguing aspect of it was his teenage daughter and her total lack of engagement. Ethan didn't consider that he was ruining her life when he arranged the setup.

That was probably because she was there simply as a prop and not as a character, which is just disappointing.

Ethan: I was just trying to protect you.
Emily: Yeah, I don't know. I think you were just trying to rub my nose in it.

At least the prop kid in Ava's case got some lines.

Ava having a case of her own was long overdue, even if it was a case that required basically no medical intervention and was simply a mirror for her own situation when it came to the validity of keeping secrets in order to protect someone else.

Ava's secret isn't going to last forever any more than Will's is, but the fall out might not be as bad for her.

After all, she was just trying to find a way to get Connor to stay and he just admitted to the same thing. If it wasn't for his damnable pride, maybe he would have gone to his father on his own.

Despite their contentious past, the two surgeons might have the best chance at happiness of all the couples. For one thing, they actually have chemistry with one another.

And that past has allowed them to be open, even blunt with one another. Calling somebody out on their flaws in a way that they can hear an accept is no small feat.

You don't need a dedicated bypass machine. You only want one 'cause you hate it when you have to bring patients upstairs to me. You have everything you need right in front of you to make this thing work. Stop always grasping for more and appreciate what you've got!

But they are a slow burn. So don't expect too much movement on the #Rhekker front on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 6, even if they have finally earned a hashtag of their very own.

Instead, we'll continue on with the #Manstead drama. This wedding is moving hella fast; they're already throwing a joint bachelor/bachelorette party. Just when you thought they couldn't get any worse, they have joint festivities. Ugh.

Secrets - Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5

Ethan's going to continue to struggle to understand Emily's decision to stay with Bernie, which seems pointless because he doesn't need to understand it, he just needs to accept it. Two totally different things.

The whole girl-who-doesn't-exist premise of a case seems more interesting than any of that, even though it's not likely to pan out to much. But maybe this will continue the ICE drama and Lanik will have a chance to grow a heart.

Despite Keith's good intentions, I don't know. Maybe some secrets you just don't get to keep.
