Last Man Standing Season 7 Episode 6 Review: The Courtship of Vanessa's Mother

at .

It was all about relationships on Last Man Standing Season 7 Episode 6.

Mother and daughter relationships, embarking on new relationships and taking advantage of family relationships, all played a significant role in the Baxter family drama and shenanigans.

The arrival of Vanessa's mother had her in a frenzy. She was plagued with self-doubt, as well as a constant fear of nothing Vanessa did was right in her mother's eyes.

She of course leaned on Mike for support, but he took the time to remind her how he never mended his relationship with his father and now it is too late.

Vanessa: Wait! Where do you think you're going?
Mike: I go to work, make money, you buy flowers.
Vanessa: No, no wait! You can't leave my mother is going to be here any second.
Mike: Why didn't you say so? I will get my announcement trumpet and blow it right here in the foyer.
Vanessa: I need you to be my buffer. You know how my mother is.
Mike: I know you want me to say something bad about your mom. But honey, I literally like six people in the world and your mom is one of them.

Vanessa and Bonnie's relationship represented so many mother/daughter relationships. Despite her mother driving her crazy, when Vanessa saw Bonnie was hurting she ran to try to fix the situation.

Mothers and daughters drive each other nuts. Even those with the best of relationships succumb to times of self-doubt and inferiority when it comes to the mother/daughter relationship.

Vanessa and Bonnie - Last Man Standing Season 7 Episode 6

Just like in the case of Vanessa and Bonnie, lack of real communication is generally the real problem between mothers and daughters.

Once Bonnie and Vanessa finally opened up, they both realized not only were they feeling the same way but they both truly wanted the relationship to be different.

No matter how old you get, daughters always want their mother's approval, while mothers need to know their daughter's respect and admire them.

Ed: When you said Bonnie thinks we are in a relationship, I thought maybe it was time I just step back a little bit.
Vanessa: And why is that?
Mike: Can you guys take this someplace else? I don't want to get involved in it.
Ed to Vanessa: Well actually, you see she is too much like you.
Mike: Ok, now I am involved. What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Ed: She is not the kind of woman you can have fun with.
Mike and Vanessa in unison: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Ed to Vanessa: Bonnie like you is a woman of substance. The kind of women I date are not as deep.
Vanessa: You mean younger?
Ed: Exactly!

Ed was back at Outdoor Man interacting with the Baxter clan and putting the moves on Bonnie. Pairing him with Vanessa's mom gave him yet another connection to the family, which keeps him in the inner circle now that he is no longer working with Mike.

Even though Bonnie turned Ed's dating proposal down to focus on repairing her relationship with Vanessa, I hope this is not the last of Ed and Bonnie's budding romance.

Susan Sullivan and Hector Elizondo have great chemistry. Plus, there would be a lot at stake if the relationship moves forward.

Mike's business partner and friend seriously involved with his mother-in-law. Not only will Mike have lots of jokes, but it could end up causing an issue in his own marriage.

Just a little food for thought on the possible future relationship of Bonnie and Ed.

Why is it that people who don't have kids think they know how to parent better than actual parents? Kyle and Mandy giving Ryan parenting advice was a perfect example of this constant issue.

Bonnie: I never know what to say to you. Whatever I say is not interesting enough or smart enough.
Vanessa: Well that is just stupid. Bad, bad choice of words.
Bonnie: And you're always taking these little shots. You know putting me down.
Vanessa: Mom I don't that to be superior to you. I do that to hurt you. Oh geez. I am just not great with the talking today.

I loved that Ryan challenged them to do better, which they did not. Like so many people who don't have kids, Kyle and Mandy tried to be Boyd's pal when he needed a parent.

They took him to the arcade to have fun before convincing him to do his homework. Not a bad attempt to mix a little fun with work but in this case, Kyle and Mandy ended up doing all Boyd's homework.

Kids are not stupid, especially at Boyd's age. They are smart and honestly work harder at getting out of doing something like math, then just simply doing the task at hand.

Boyd took advantage of Kyle and Mandy by playing dumb to get what he wanted. It is a classic move by kids his age. The cool aunt and uncle bought it hook, line and sinker.

Boyd: I'm stupid.
Kyle: Don't say that. Math was hard for me too, and nobody thinks that I am stupid.
Boyd: I try, but I just can't do it.
Kyle: You're a Baxter. You can do anything, even Vin Diesel impressions!
Mandy: Maybe we can help you.
Boyd: How am I supposed to remember tangent equals opposite over adjacent?
Kyle: What I used to do was come up with fun ways to remember things. So, if tangent equals opposite over adjacent, then T equals O over A, so TOA. Just remember tickle ostriches always.
Mandy: This is known as a moronic device.

Ryan and Kristin echoed words of so many parents, as they explained to Kyle and Mandy that Boyd did not need them to be his friend. He needs them to be his parents.

Truer words were never spoken. There comes a day when the parent/child relationship develops into friendship but during the teenage years is not the time.

Mike's Outdoor Man vlog was back, yes! He was full of thoughts on how nothing ruins a family quite like family. He even alluded that the mother is the number one cause of family destruction.

It was an honest, yet hilarious depiction of the family dynamic. No one can explain a hot topic quite like Mike Baxter, but that doesn't mean he isn't right.

We all love our family, but as Mike said, "Only family can drop 50 megatons of guilt, resentment, and judgment on us."

Why yes, Mike Baxter, you are correct, no one can make you feel worse about yourself than family.
