Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Jingle Hell

at .

The midseason finale has finally come upon us!

Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 9 is all about going against the odds as Macy refuses to let destiny get in the way of her potential relationship with Galvin, and Mel seeks Harry’s guidance after learning information that leaves her questioning everything she knows.

After a few episodes of introducing us to the world and showing sisterhood at its finest, we have finally seen the trio facing each other in a fight. On Christmas Day!

Mel Vera, Charmed Season 1 Episode 9 "Jingle Hell"

Although the fight wasn’t technically Macy versus Maggie and Mel, it was still nice to see it play out visually.

The first few minutes were boring. There was more talking than action, and the conversation wasn't remarkable. It was just a simple chit-chat from characters to fill in the time.

Fortunately, once the action started, it was all we needed.

With the Sarcana at play, the Elders having a dangerous nemesis, and Mel being asked to play double-agent, it was a fresh take that we hadn’t yet seen.

It is the first time there was an adversary early on for the elders in either version of Charmed, and they are witches of their own right.

As a character, Jada has really grown on me. She’s reminiscent of Paige Matthews from Charmed OG while being an independent, badass half-whitelighter, half-witch.

Maggie Finds A Box - Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 7

On the other hand, with Maggie falling in love with Parker she chose to trust him with her magical blood unaware of the repercussions if put into the wrong hands. All she thought was that it was something that would cure Parker, all while draining the Charmed One’s power through Maggie, the empath.

That was a mistake. If you’re a witch with a bloodline that could save the world from supernatural doom, you’re supposed to be extra careful about whom you entrust with your DNA. Your trust issues must be upped by a double!

Mel's reaction of Mel to Maggie was necessary. She wasn’t calling her stupid, like Maggie. She was just concerned that she was not making the right decision when it comes to the matters of her heart.

Now, I don’t blame Maggie for falling in love and choosing to trust, but can you imagine the heartbreak it’ll bring to her once she finds out Parker is actually a half-demon?

Well, she did.

When Maggie learned that Parker is the shadow demon, things got messy between them. But that's also when the human side of Parker began to overpower his demonic side.

He even tried to help our beloved heroes from the hands of his vengeful brother, Hunter. I could see a future battle between the two demonic brothers, and it’s not looking good for Parker.

Story Time - Charmed (2018) Season 1 Episode 7

What surprised me, even more, was when the portal to Tartarus was opened by Parker and the Charmed Ones, I didn’t think Harry would be sent along with him when Hunter grabbed him by his ankle.

What could it mean for the future of Harry as their whitelighter? Can’t they summon Harry back from the down under by calling his name instead of Megan Markle? Or, will they try to retrieve him and once they do, Harry be a different version of himself?

The characters are improving gradually, and it’s hard not to get excited about the possibility of a darker version of our witty but awkward whitelighter.

If things were done correctly, things can get more interesting than  was done in the original! The potential twists and turns are fascinating. I think it’s safe to say that as fans of the original, Charmed 2018 keeps on surprising us!

All in all, “Jingle Hell” was anything but lackluster. We saw a side of Madeleine Mantock playing Hunter under Macy’s guise. It’s interesting when lead actors show a side that is not normally what the actor would be asked to do.

Mel is still tortured about whether or not to believe Jada and the Sarcana. Greater forces are at play, and Mel isn’t the type who’d like to feel as if she’s a pawn in a chess game. She’s a Charmed one, after all.

Christmas Traditions - Charmed (2018)

Now that Maggie knows about Parker and his secret, will she be able to keep the relationship going without difficulties? Of course not. However, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Thoughts and theories after this episode:

  • While I love Nico for Mel, I can’t help but cheat on her with my love for Jada Shields.

  • Galvin is still not as interesting as a character. I’d rather see a Macy/Harry love story grow. It started a few episodes back! Explore it more!!!

  • The protection mark Galvin had made him an inch more interesting than he would have been, but that’s all about it. It actually hurt Parker because of his demonic nature. Does this mean Macy isn’t all the evil we got told she was because the protection didn't hurt her?

  • If not a love interest, could Jada Shields be the Paige Matthews of this reiteration of Charmed? I mean, we were first told the sisters were of Latina descent, then we learned that only Mel is part of that ethnic background among the sisters while Macy and Maggie are actually black.

Is this their way to correct the narrative? Also, they are already paying homage to the original storyline. I just can’t help but think of it that way!

  • Could it be that Macy is not the half-sister, but Mel is? That would be a great twist!

  • Hunter really embraces the demon in him. Is there any part of him that is redeemable like his brother?

  • The recreation of their predecessor’s storyline is quite impressive. This episode is one the first that gave me so many allusions to the original series, especially with Parker being a half-demon, just like Cole was in the original Charmed.

  • If Parker was upped to being a series regular, I’m all up to the thought of Jada being a series regular as well.

  • With all these storylines presented, I think it is going to be more effective if the story is in a serialized form rather than procedural.

  • I’m kind of disappointed with one thing: Maggie being the counterpart of Phoebe. While Phoebe’s power made it easier for them to fix things, Maggie’s not using it as much as it could have been used.

  • Save Harry! There can’t be an episode without our beloved accent-throwing whitelighter in the mix!
