Euphoria Season 1 Episode 5 Review: '03 Bonnie and Clyde

at .  Updated at .

The downfall of the Jacobs family is in session, and it's about time.

The truth about the marks on Maddy's neck came to light on Euphoria Season 1 Episode 5, and it resulted in another eye-opening installment of this HBO hit.

Nate is a loose cannon who is about to blow up at this stage, and there's no telling who will be caught in the crosshairs when it inevitably happens.

Maddy Returns to School - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 5

He abused Maddy to the point that she had to get up for school three hours early to conceal the marks. That's awful, and he has to pay for his sins.

I'm not sitting here saying that Maddy is the best person, but nobody deserves to be physically abused by the person they love, or anyone for that matter.

Maddy knew who she was from a very early age.

Rue

Maddy wanted to protect Nate at all costs because she still seems to think that there's a future for her and Nate. In reality, she could not be more wrong.

If the Jacobs family were never going to welcome her into their home with open arms, there's no way they're going to now.

The Jacobs at the School - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 5

What we already know about them is just how manipulative and believable they can be to flawlessly shift the blame away from them.

Nate managed to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of those in the police station. It was masterfully executed, and I don't doubt for one minute that his father had a say in telling him what to do.

Do you think this stuff affects them, even if they don’t know it?

Cal

Nate's sexuality is starting to be opened up for debate thanks in large part to Cassie's loose lips, and I'm starting to wonder what lengths Maddy will go to in order to get revenge when she learns who has been talking about her boyfriend.

The issue here is that Maddy thinks losing him would be the end of the world, but she really could find someone who loves her for her, instead of someone who criticizes her at every turn.

Maddy wants to feel fulfilled in life, and there's no way that Nate will be able to do that. He's a sociopath who will stop at nothing to be the puppet master in any scenario.

Maddy and Nate - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 5

He's going to want to do something to take the heat away from him in the school, and it seems highly likely that he'll take some of that rage out on Jules.

All I know is, life is not a Nicholas Sparks novel.

Rue

He's not going to like the fact that Jules is happy without him in her life, and he'll want to take that away from her. The best way for him to do that is to leak the information about Jules.

It's entirely possible that he won't want to, but he needs to do something so that everyone else will move on to the next big drama.

It's clear Maddy is not going to be moving on from him. Everyone pointed out that he was nothing more than an abuser, and he's going to continue to cause problems.

Maddy Learns the Truth - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 4

Letting Maddy stew for a few days without returning her calls and texts was his way of shifting the odds in his favor. He wanted Maddy to think she was cut off for good so that when he finally responded, she would do whatever he told her to.

Whoever did this to you doesn’t love you.

Detective

It was obvious Nate was going to use the same motel his father uses for his conquests.

The moment the scene pulled back to reveal Cal was driving away, it was predictable for Nate to arrive right after.

But that only further helped fuel Cal's theory that his own lies are rubbing off on his son.

Cal is not a likable character in the slightest because he's living a lie, breaking a bunch of laws, and pushing his children to strive for perfection.

Cal is too overbearing to the point that everyone in his life feels the immense amount of pressure. He's in control, and he wouldn't be able to survive if all the power was taken away from him.

Nate Meets with Jules - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 4

Now that Cal is starting to witness that his family has all of this rage, he's asking himself a lot of questions about what he gets up to in his spare time.

Nate knows everything his father gets up to, but there's no concrete proof that that is what's making Nate the way he is today. I'm no medical professional, so that's something that could be addressed down the line.

I'm starting to get the sense that either Nate or Maddy will be dead by the end of Euphoria Season 1. There's too much happening that this gets brushed under the rug ahead of Euphoria Season 2.

Making a Decision - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 4

Jules was clearly struggling with the pressure of being the one who is there for Rue while simultaneously freaking out about all of the drama with the Jacobs family.

It only takes one sentence to have her hauled in for questioning, despite the fact that she thought she was talking to a genuine person who was the same age as her.

That explains why she was cagey every single time someone mentioned her relationship with Rue.

It's obvious that Jules is the big reason why Rue is in a better place right now. But Jules is apprehensive about it, seemingly because she's not sure what she actually wants.

The First Meeting - Euphoria Season 1 Episode 4

It's possible that Jules could be planning on leaving the town behind for college, and that could include Rue. We don't know what her college plans are, but it's possible that she's worried about a long-distance thing.

That would send Rue off the deep end again. The troubled teenager finally admitted that she was lying every time she took a chip at Narcotics Anonymous, and it was about time.

She was lying to herself every time she was there, but now she wanted it all out in the open, and she can restart her recovery program.

That's all I got, Euphoria Fanatics.
