Suits Season 9 Episode 1 Review: Everything's Changed

at .

Over the last few years, Suits has become a show that generally focuses on people gunning for the firm and everyone associated with it before a random plot development helps save the day.

If Suits Season 9 Episode 1 is anything to go by, then we're in for more of the same over a lengthier arc.

Alex Gives a Warning - Suits

They do say that you should give storylines time to breathe, but something about the New York Bar going after the firm feels a bit repetitive.

Donna: Rachel, call me as soon as you get this. It happened. And by it, I mean ... oh, shit. I gotta go.
Harvey: Who was that?
Donna: No one. Rachel.
Harvey: You told her, didn't you?
Donna: No, yeah.
Harvey: Well, in that case, I hope she listens to her messages before Mike because I just left him a doozy.
Donna: What? I didn't authorize you to do that. Wait, seriously, what did you tell him?
Harvey: What did you tell Rachel?
Donna: That you were better the first time.
Harvey: Good because that's exactly what I told Mike about you.
Donna: No, you didn't. And neither did I because you weren't. Because more vigorous isn't necessarily better.
Harvey: Neither is younger.
Donna: Really? Twelve hours in and you're going to chuck that one out?
Harvey: Twelve years in and, no, Donna, I'm not. Because I am glad I came over last night.
Donna: Me too.
Harvey: You do know I'm coming over again tonight, right?
Donna: Yeah. Harvey, I do know that. There is one thing that I don't know. What exactly changed to make you come over here?

It's a shame that it seems that the talented Suits cast does the same thing every single episode, but hopefully there's a way to salvage things before this 10-episode final season wraps.

A new plot showed that most of our beloved characters are willing to stand with each other to help save the day.

Alex and Louis - Suits

The forced wedge between Harvey and Samantha, however, was another dull development.

The two work much better when they're not fighting their way through convoluted storylines, so someone should take note that they work together and don't need to be hurling insults at one another.

In a sense, Samantha was right to be angry about what was happening with Robert's name, but she also needed to remember that there's a reason why he's no longer at the firm.

Samantha: This is Samantha Wheeler.
Katrina: Samantha, it's Katrina. I got in early this morning because I figured we'd have a lot to take care of with the whole Robert situation which is why I was here when the call came in and...
Samantha: Katrina, I'm in the middle of a workout. Can you just cut to it?
Katrina: You need to get in here, and you need to get in here now.

Choosing to take the fall for what was happening was his way of making up for sins of the past, but it's no surprise that the bar thinks there was foul play involved.

Harvey Wants the Truth - Suits Season 9 Episode 1

The characters simply cannot keep a secret, and that could cause the downfall of the company.

Is it time for the ever-changing company to shut its doors for good and accept defeat? A part of me thinks it should. The name changes so often that it must be problematic for other companies to keep up.

At least we'll be checking in with Mike, who will probably show up in a heroic way just when it seems like there's nothing else that can be done.

Donna: Say it again.
Harvey: I looked around, and you weren't there.
Donna: I'm here now. What?
Harvey: I just wish I had come to my senses sooner.
Donna: It's okay. I was worth the wait.
Harvey: Donna.
Donna: I know, we have to get some sleep.
Harvey: Everything's changed.
Donna: I know.

Donna is going to be livid when she learns that their recent prediciment is all her fault, and by extension, the storyline is going to put her and Harvey at odds once again.

Is Harvey's Career Destroyed? - Suits Season 8 Episode 16

Did you think putting them together after eight seasons was going to result in a happily ever after for them? If so, then you can think again.

They're relishing the company of one another right now, but they've arrived at that point in their relationship a little too late in the game for it to hold much emotional weight.

It's sad, but it's true. Suits wasted too much time on other characters. As someone who has watched the show from the beginning, I could care less about the two of them getting together.

What will suck is the back and forth when they're trying to save the firm from destruction, and I bet there will be pink slips passed around, too.

Donna Wages War - Suits Season 8 Episode 3

Harvey's knack for wanting to protect Donna at all costs -- even when she's wrong -- is going to come back and haunt him.

For that, we could be looking at the series ending with some of the beloved characters unable to practice law, but there will always be a possibility for them to return to it down the line.

Mike Ross managed it, so why can't one of them?

Harvey: Samantha, whatever it is, it will have to wait. We have to start locking up Robert's clients before...
Samantha: That's why I'm here. Three of them have already put their accounts up for review.
Harvey: Son of a bitch. The bar just ruled on Robert yesterday.
Samantha: It gets worse. I reached out to six more, and none of them would take my call.
Harvey: Which means six more are about to go.
Samantha: And the only way that could happen this fast is if somebody's already poisoned the well.
Harvey: You think Hardman's still after us?
Samantha: I did ... until I saw these notices were dated two days ago.
Harvey: And two days ago, Hardman was gunning to have me disbarred, not Robert.
Samantha: Exactly.
Harvey: Then, who the hell knew to go after his clients.
Samantha: The same man that tried to blackmail Robert into taking his name off our wall.
Harvey: Blackmail. What are you talking about?
Samantha: I'm talking about you and I going to pay a visit to Eric Calder.

Even though Mike and Rachel are no longer part of the show, I liked the nod to their past when Donna met up with Harvey at their apartment.

I would love to be wealthy enough to rent out an apartment to someone that I haven't even vetted. As ridiculous as the dialogue was during those scenes, it was nice.

Taking a Leap of Faith - Suits Season 8 Episode 15

Harvey knows his life would be drastically different if it was not for him taking a chance on Mike all those years ago.

Mike changed Harvey's life for the better, and he's not going to be forgotten. I daresay there will be a lot of wild developments when Mike arrives further into Suits Season 9

"Everything's Changed" was not an appropriate title for the installment. Almost everything was still the same aside from Harvey and Donna confirming they would be pursuing a relationship.

Battle lines were drawn, and our final villain was set up, but beyond that, it proved what I've been saying for a while now:

Suits is running on fumes and should have really called it quits with Suits Season 8. If anything, this final season already feels like it's around purely to get people to tune in to the Gina Torres-fronted spinoff, Pearson

Katrina Begs to Differ - Suits Season 8 Episode 13

Right now, Suits is poised to go out as a show that went on for much longer than it should have, and that's not the best way to go.
