All the Exciting Original Shows & Movies Coming to Disney+

Disney+ is gearing up to take over the world, or, at the very least, provide stiff competition to other streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. 

Launching November 12 in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands (and a week later in Australia and New Zealand), Disney's streaming platform has already made lots of commotion in the entertainment world.

Those who scoffed at adding another streaming service are now re-thinking their stance after hearing Disney's plans for programming. 

Not only is Disney+ planning to offer classic films, but they're also rebooting nostalgic favorites, and expanding the Marvel universe with several new shows, both animated and live-action. 

Disney+ is bringing your childhood to life. For avid TV watchers, it's the equivalent of going to Disney World or Disneyland. 

While the Disney Channel markets with a focus on children, Disney+ is planning to entice children, millennials, and adults alike.

Best of all, their price-point is competitive and appealing. At $7 a month, it's almost half of what Netflix is charging, and they're even offering bundles with ESPN Plus and ad-supported Hulu for just $13, $5 less than what all three combined would cost. 

It's hard to continue hating on Disney+ when they have so much working in their favor.

Nostalgic Reboots

Lizzie McGuire

Every preteens' best friend is back. The Disney+ reboot of Lizzie McGuire will focus on a 30-something Lizzie living in New York. In the words of Lizzie herself (aka the actress that portrays her, Hilary Duff):

"She has her dream job as an apprentice to an interior designer who is a pretty big deal. She has a gorgeous fiancé who is this chef at this cool Soho restaurant. She has a cute little apartment in Brooklyn, and everything is going her way and she's celebrating her 30th birthday with all of her friends."

Fans were initially upset that Lizzie doesn't end up with middle-school crush, Gordo, portrayed by Adam Lamberg, but that doesn't mean he won't make an appearance. As of now, no other original characters -- Miranda (Lalaine), Lizzie's brother Matt (Jake Thomas), or her parents -- are set to join the cast. 

Chicago Fire Review: Infection, Part I

On the flip side (we used to say that back in the '00s), sassy animated Lizzie will be returning donning the same outfit.

Proud Family

Word of a Proud Family reboot had the internet buzzing with delight.

Penny, Oscar Proud, Suga Momma are all returning to Disney! Tommy Davidson, the voice of Oscar, spilled the beans to WhereistheBuzz and said the show would be returning with new episodes.

It's unclear if Penny will be frozen-in-time as a 14-year-old or if her story will pick up in her mid-30s like Lizzie McGuire's. Either way, we're on board. 

Disney+ hasn't officially released a statement about this reboot. 

Home Alone

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this Christmas classic. And even if you've watched it every year for the holiday season, chances are, you aren't sick of it.

No one can replace young menace McCaulay Caulkin as he gets into trouble while being left home alone during the holidays.

There is no need to re-imagine it, re-do it, re-anything it.

But Disney+ believes that it can capitalize on the beloved film by rebooting it and attracting old and new audiences. 

Maybe they'll bring Caulkin back? Maybe he'll leave his children at home this time only to realize they've inherited his street smarts to ward off the clunkiest of criminals?

It's a little hard to believe considering this new generation of kids will now have smart homes, smartphones, and the ability just to text their parents "hey, you forgot about me," order an Uber, and get to the airport without physically speaking to a person.

They can also say, "Hey, Alexa. Call 9-1-1 cause some weird dudes are trying to break-in." All the magic is snuffed out. 

But I'm not going to be a complete Grinch. Maybe, just maybe, Disney+ does have a solid idea for this reboot. As long as it's done right and doesn't taint the perfection that already exists within the Home Alone franchise, I'm not completely opposed. 

High School Musical

Getcha head in the game, and get ready for the HSM reboot.

The students of East High are eager to put on their school's production of, you guessed it, High School Musical. The student body is competing for the coveted roles of Gabriella, Troy Bolton, and Sharpay Evans and hoping to nail auditions.

Exes Nini and Ricky land the leading roles of lovebirds Gabriella and Troy and are forced to put aside their difference because, as we all know, the show must go on. 

The success of Disney's original High School Musical was due to it being a contained, two-hour movie with a clear story-arc that didn't overstay its welcome. 

The premise has potential, but it's all about execution. What happens once the core group of students puts on the musical and the novelty of HSM nostalgia wears off? Will they use Glee's success as their playbook? Will this be a one-season hit?

The Resident Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Saints & Sinners

We're willing to give it a try for nostalgia's sake, but we have our doubts. 

The series premieres Nov. 12 with the Disney+ launch. 

Live-Action Films

Lady and the Tramp

Disney's gone to the dogs.

In 2019, Disney has been all about the live-action reboots. On the heels of Aladdin and the Lion King's massive success comes the Lady and the Tramp reboot starring real-life rescue dogs! 

Justin Theroux will voice Tramp, played by a shaggy pup named Monte who was rescued from a kill shelter in New Mexico in real life and adopted by one of the film's trainers.

Tessa Thompson lends her voice to Lady, who will be played by a Cocker Spaniel named Rose. 

Others include Sam Elliot as Trusty, Janelle Monae as Peg, Ashley Jensen as Jock, and Benedict Wong as Bull. 

While it's a little strange to see two doggos eating pasta -- the scene doesn't translate as well as I hoped it would -- the film is cuddly, cute, and will hopefully raise awareness about adopting from rescues. 

The film premieres Nov. 12! 

Original Offerings

Noelle 

Disney+ is hoping to win over the hearts of Christmas lovers with their holiday offering, Noelle.

Though, this film isn't going to give all the credit to Santa Claus or any man in a red suit for that matter.

Instead, it puts the spotlight on Noelle (played by Anna Kendrick), Santa's daughter, who sacrifices everything and steps in to save Christmas (and the family business) when her brother (played by Bill Hader) ditches his responsibilities and goes missing before the big day.

It's lighthearted, cute, and has all the makings of a Disney princess movie without any princesses or castles. 

Premieres Nov. 12.

Diary of a Female President

Gina Rodriguez is back, but this time, she's not only lending her voice to the series, but she's also sitting in the executive producer chair.

Disney+ gave a straight to series order for the comedy's first season consisting of 10 episodes. 

The series is told through the narration of "a Cuban-American 12-year-old Elena Romero's diary, as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school and her journey to becoming the future president of the United States."

The Jane the Virgin star will recur as adult Elena, who is currently on the campaign trail. 

The series is set to launch sometime in 2020. 

Star Wars Mania

The Mandalorian

Star Wars is one of the biggest franchise's on the planet, so it's not surprising that Disney+ invested a lot of time in cultivating Star Wars content.

The long-awaited live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, is finally premiering on Nov. 12.

The series is described as "the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic." 

It stars Pedro Pascal, as the Mandalorian, and Julia Jones.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Miniseries

Is this a Jedi mind trick? It sure feels like it.

The craziest news coming from Disney+ is that Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a role he introduced in 1999's Stars Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. 

Insight from sources reveals that the series will be a limited mini-series spanning between 6-8 episodes. 

Untitled Cassian Andor Series

Yes, this is a series that currently doesn't boast a name, but we're excited nonetheless because the prequel will help explain how the Star Wars rebellion began.

Diego Lunar is tapped to step back into the role after introducing the character in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. No premiere date has been established. 

Marvel Universe

Hawkeye

Hawkeye has an interesting premise compared to all the other MCU shows: Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner, hands over the mantle to Kate Bishop, a young archer and in the comics, a member of the Young Avengers, which could set the series up with a brand new cast that could span tons of spin-offs. 

Currently, Hailee Steinfeld is in talks for the role. The expected premiere date is the fall of 2021. 

Loki

Continuing in the MCU universe, Loki is a series based on the Asgardian trickster.

Tim Hiddleston will reprise his role, which finds Loki using the Infinity Stone he snatched up in Avengers: Endgame to travel across various universes.

Loki fans will be waiting a bit for this one as it's also expected to premiere in 2021. 

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The series reunites MCU vets Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Star in the title roles to continue their exciting new adventure.

The Resident star and Revenge album, Emily VanCamp, will reprise her role as Sharon Carter (Peggy's niece) in the series.

The six-parter isn't expected until fall of 2020 and will pick up where Endgame left off. 

Wandavision

The handful of Marvel TV shows coming to the streaming service also includes WandaVision.

Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen will reprise their big-screen roles.

"We've never referred to her as 'the Scarlet Witch' on camera before," Olsen told Buzzfeed.

"She's always just been Wanda. And this is that opportunity and it's a big character, deep dive. It's going to be an exciting and satisfying show for fans."

While the show is set to premiere in 2021, it'll be worth the wait.

Ms. Marvel

A project featuring the first Muslim superhero lead is in the works.

The series will focus on the Kamala Khan version of the character, a Pakistani American hailing from New Jersey who possesses shapeshifting powers.

Ms. Marvel was announced at the D23 Expo, but again, no premiere date is on record.

She-Hulk

The 'she' in question is Jennifer Walters played by Shameless star, Emmy Rossum.

Much like her cousin, Bruce Banner, Jennifer gets big and green whenever she's angry, which probably isn't the best trait to have as a lawyer. 

No premiere date has been set currently.

Moon Knight

The "action-adventure series" will focus on Marc Spector, who emerges as the vigilante Moon Knight after being left for dead in a desert.

He begins exhibiting multiple personalities.

An expected premiere date is set for 2021.

Animated

Phineas and Ferb

That's what I'm talkin' about!

A new Phineas and Ferb animated movie titled "Candace Against the Universe" is coming to Disney+ in 2020.

The duo will "travel across the galaxy to rescue their sister Candace."

Ashley Tisdale reprises her role as Candace along with Vincent Martella as Phineas. David Errigo, Jr. will voice Ferb.

Muppets Now

What happens when Kermit and friend go off-script? We're about to find out.

Muppets Now is said to be a "short-form" series coming in 2020. Not much else is known, but we hear Muppets, and we add it to our future watch list. 

Pixar 

Monsters at Work

Billy Crystal and John Goodman are BACK in the new animated series, which picks up 6-months after the original movie's storyline. 

Mike and Sulley work at Monsters, INC. harvesting children's laughs to power Monstropolis.

Unscripted 

Encore!

The Good Place may be ending after season 4, but Kristen Bell will be making an appearance on Disney+ hosting Encore!, a series that first made buzz as an ABC special back in 2017.

The series reunites "former castmates of high school musicals, tasking them with re-creating their original performance years after they last performed it, in a high school reunion like no other." 

It will be available on Nov 12th! 

It's said that Disney+ will be releasing episodes every week, much like primetime television, instead of the all-at-once "binge" model made popular by Netflix and other streaming services. 

Disney+ revealed a full list of classics that will also be added to the roster including Twas the Night, 10 Things I Hate About You, A Bugs Life, Camp Rock, Caden Kelly, Finding Nemo, Frozen, Girl Meets World, Get a Clue, all the 'Honey I' films, Inspector Gadget, Lilo & Stitch, and much, much more.
