Superstore Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Self-Care

at .

Stress levels were at an all time high on Superstore Season 5 Episode 5.

With a health and safety inspection coming up and the store manager running on no sleep, Jonah and Cheyenne convinced Amy to take a much-needed nap.

But as they soon realized, running the store is no easy task, and things quickly escalated from bad to worse.

Sayid - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Surprisingly, Superstore Season 5 Episode 5 was one of the funniest episodes of the series in a while.

Jonah and Cheyenne frantically running around the store to clean up the aisle Amy and the inspector was heading towards was comedy gold.

We still have a lot to do for our health and safety inspection on Friday.

Amy

Despite how funny everything was, it was also stressful to watch.

Amy's such a beloved character that viewers want the best for her no matter the situation.

Overworked - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Should she be napping on the clock? Not necessarily. But does she deserve it? Absolutely.

No. I'm not gonna take a nap. I'm going to...where was I going?

Amy

You take all the time you need, honey.

Helping Hand - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Jonah's concern for his girlfriend was adorable. It was refreshing that they shared a couple of scenes for once instead of completely ignoring each other for 22 minutes.

I've recreated your ideal sleep scenario. Warm lights, one pillow for your head, one pillow to hug, a laptop queued to the eleven o'clock news...

Jonah

Isn't it interesting that the one episode Jonah and Amy shared a storyline was the funniest episode of Superstore Season 5 yet?

I'm just throwing this out there, but is it possible that Jonah and Amy's dynamic is one of the best parts of the show and should be embraced rather than ignored?

(The answer is yes.)

Responsibilities - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

On another note, Superstore Season 5 Episode 5 also reminded viewers that Cheyenne has always been like a little sister to Amy.

Although, if the writing had been consistent, viewers wouldn't need reminding in the first place.

Amy's relationships with Jonah and Cheynne have always been her strongest connections, yet they were, ironically, the two relationships that were being neglected the most.

Cheyenne treated Amy rather poorly throughout Superstore Season 4, and at one point, it appeared as if Cheyenne's only purpose on the show was to team up with Mateo to make fun of her.

Leprechauns - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Hopefully, that can be left in the past, and Amy and Cheyenne can get back to their original dynamic. Their friendship is much more enjoyable than Cheyenne and Mateo's animosity.

Speaking of Mateo, he found himself a job at Cloud 9. Well, in Cloud 9.

There hasn't been much progress on Mateo's undocumented status, but he still needs a way to make money until he finds out what's next.

It was nice of the Vision Center to hire him without documentation, but the job ended up being a lot more than Mateo signed up for.

Coffee Time - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Dan's exploitation of Mateo was downright infuriating, to say the least.

I'm not just Dan's assistant. I'm also his personal stylist.

Mateo

Mateo's status as an undocumented immigrant has continuously held him back throughout the series.

It's upsetting that he was found out, but at least now that everything's out in the open, he shouldn't have to worry about anyone holding it over his head.

However, that's exactly what Dan was doing. The blackmailing didn't sit right with me, and it felt as if Mateo found himself backed into another corner.

This could very well be the only job opportunity he has right now, so Mateo doesn't have another option than to put up with his new boss.

Keeping Control - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

I was hoping that things would get easier for Mateo eventually, but this installment proved that when you're undocumented, the struggle is continuous.

Overall, this was undoubtedlly the most comedic episode of the season.

Jonah and Amy's anxiety could be felt right into our homes, and it was impossible not to be simultaneously laughing and sitting on the edge of your seat.

Marcus - Superstore Season 5 Episode 5

Stray Thoughts:

  • Jonah is practically Parker's second father, and it's everything we've ever wanted. Can Amy and Jonah just get married and become an official family please?
  • I just wanted to mention what a great addition Sayid is to the series. Even if he only has one line, it's bound to elicit a laugh from viewers. Where was he the first three seasons?
  • Dina's concern about Glenn was adorable. Although she'd never admit it, she cares about her old boss, and it's sweet to see her show it in her own way. It wouldn't be Dina if it wasn't ridiculous.
  • I'll admit it. I had no idea who Garrett was when he rolled up completely bald and without any facial hair.
  • It was about time someone finally mentioned Dina's dad. The only thing we know about him is that he abandoned Dina at a gas station. It's time to get some more backstory on Dina's family.
