There's a rescue mission underway on The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5

As soon as the gang discovered that Bad Janet was impersonating the real one, Michael and Jason set off to the Bad Place to bring Janet home.

But without a Janet to run the neighborhood, there's trouble in paradise, and everyone on Team Cockroach found themselves in a bit of a bind.

Vicky - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5

I never thought I would say this, but thank goodness for Derek.

It was easy to forget that the people in the neighborhood couldn't exist without Janet operating them, and the entire experiment would have fallen apart if Derek wasn't there to keep everything running.

The residents may have been functioning, but they weren't functioning well.

It was a good call on Eleanor's part to get the humans out of the neighborhood and away from all the potential chaos.

Tahani got tasked with keeping an eye on the humans at the lake house, which led her to question her self worth.

Eleanor: Dude, what were you thinking?!
Tahani: I just wanted to be useful. All I ever get to do here is throw parties, which is all I ever got to do back on Earth and now I've ruined everything.

Back on Earth all Tahani ever did was throw parties, and that's all she's ever done in the Good Place as well.

It says a lot about her development that she wants to step up and do something that will make an impact.

Tahani was genuinely upset in a way that we haven't witnessed in a while, but thankfully Eleanor was there to comfort her.

Looking back, Eleanor and Tahani would have made a phenomenal couple if The Good Place had decided to take that route.

Eleanor constantly challenges Tahani to be better, and Tahani even admitted that her friendship with Eleanor is what helped her progress so much in the first place.

Babe, the dodos in that house are literally the four most important human beings in the universe. I wanted you to take care of them because I trust you.

Eleanor

It would have been fun to see them together, but since Eleanor and Chidi have such an adorable romance, we can't complain.

Speaking of Chidi and Eleanor, it was refreshing to learn that Chidi's trust in her wasn't erased along with his memories.

Eleanor: Do you trust me, Chidi?
Chidi: Yes. I really do.

His trust in Eleanor appeared to surprise even him, and it's another example of how deep their love goes.

You may be able to take away the memories, but you can't take away the feelings.

The reboots have suppressed Eleanor and Chidi's love for centuries, but nothing has ever been able to annihilate it.

Every time Eleanor discovered that she harbored feelings for Chidi in the past, it was almost as if a switch got flipped and her feelings bubbled right back up to the surface.

She never had to redevelop them. She only had to get reminded they were there.

Eleanor's face when she saw Chidi and Simone kiss was enough to make anyone pity her.

Soulmates - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5

Watching Eleanor's repeated heartbreak is getting downright exhausting. I'm not sure how much more I can take, so I can't even imagine how Eleanor must be feeling.

Thankfully, things are finally going well for another beloved couple.

Michael and Jason saved Janet, and they are on their way back to the neighborhood to reunite with Eleanor and Tahani.

Jason's confession to Janet at Demon Con was adorable, yet depressing.

Demonic Speech - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5

Janet was under the impression that Jason was another demon disguised in a skinsuit, and her little cry thinking the real Jason wasn't confessing his love to her was devasting.

Hi, Janet. It's me, Jason. Your boyfriend. I really miss you. I know we were in a fight before, but I hope you've forgiven me because I love you...girl.

Jason

Janet has always been a big ball of light and happiness, so seeing her in pain is like a punch to the gut.

We couldn't be happier that Janet is safe and sound and on her way back to the neighborhood.

It's time to get this experiment back on track once and for all. The road ahead might finally seem clear, but viewers should know better than to think everything is fine.

Tahani - The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5

Stray Thoughts:

  • When Eleanor's stressed, she calls Tahani "dude," and when she's chill, she calls her "babe." There's nothing majorly significant about it, but it's cute, and I had to point it out.
  • Michael's speech to the demons was inspiring. Facing your past is never easy, but Michael did it like a champ. He's not the demon he once was, and he's not afraid to let the other demons know that they can also make a change.
  • Did anyone else miss Vicky? She's not in the series too often, but she's always a great source of comedy.
  • Derek might have saved the neighborhood, but it still feels necessary to point out how annoying he is. What is with that guy?
  • It was nice to get clarification that Eleanor's, Tahani's, and Jason's memories have been fully restored. But who can keep track of centuries worth of events?

The Good Place Season 4 Episode 5 Quotes

Jason: Michael, I'm scared.
Michael: Me too, bud.
Jason: I mean, what if all this time apart has changed me and Janet's relationship? What if that special connection is gone?
Michael: Yeah. I mean, for me it's scary that we're standing in the birthplace of evil, surrounded by billions of demons who want to destroy us.
Jason: Mm. I guess we both have things we're scared about.

Wait, can I have all my memories back again? I forgot most of them.
