Rufus Humphrey has a tough job: he's the father of Jenny and Dan, the head of a humble, middle class family living in a crumbling apartment on the Upper West Side of New York.
His children are outsiders looking into the lives of the rich and glamorous, sliding into the role of Ryan Atwood from The OC.
Rufus is drawn to Serena's glamor and the world that exists just outside the reach of he and his kids.

um, they're artists, and they're from brooklyn -- and they live in what is a super-fashionable million-dollar loft. 'humble' and 'middle class' don't come to mind. they have a sort of glamor all their own, which is the whole stupid privileged point of the show. DUH
