Recap

Camille visits Genevieve in the evening and returns the letters from Valmont. Genevieve assures Camille she is welcome in her home.

As she rubs salve on Camille's wrists, Genevieve tells her that as long as she knows people's secrets, she will thrive in Paris. Genevieve tosses Valmont's letters into the fire.

Genevieve writes a letter to her husband and then throws herself down the staircase. Camille, Victoire, and Majordome hear the thud and rush to her, but Genevieve is dead.

Victoire insists to Camille that they should leave. Camille says that Genevieve wanted her to stay and avenge their sex.

Genevieve de Merteuil's body is laid out on her bed in grandeur, powdered by the servants. Camille comes in, and the powder reminds her of snow from a memory.

In this memory, she trudged after a woman in the snow. Camille was carried away cold on a cart with blood on her hands. Victoire was there to help her, and some men came and took her to Madame Jericho.

Azolan tells Valmont that Camille is gone. Valmont insists she's just doing this to punish him. Valmont asks about the Marquise de Merteuil. Azolan informs him that she is dead.

Valmont is incredulous at first, but Azolan assures him it is true. Valmont reassures Azolan that he has other friends and they will be fine.

Camille looks through Valmont's letters.

Camille remembers her time at Jericho's. Madame Jericho informs her that gentleman has come in and paid for her for the week, and Camille she made money for Jericho taking her in and tending her wounds.

Still in the memory, Camille gets ready with the help of Victoire. When Camille is dressed and made up, Valmont enters, struck by her beauty. He tells her he wishes to know the hearts and minds of women and asks her to teach him how to sate the desires of others.

Camille reads more of Valmont's letters while remembering their first sexual encounter and what she taught him about women -- that they desire to be truly seen, not just as a reflection of the man looking at them.

Back in the present, Camille heads downstairs. Majordome offers her a simple breakfast and then tells her he will see that her carriage is packed up so she can leave.

Camille insists that the Marquise wanted her to flourish here. Majordome tells her the Marquise is dead. Camille says she will wait until Genevieve's husband, the Marquis, returns home to see what he has to say.

Gabriel visits Madame Jericho, who tells him Camille is gone. He says he will pay for her in installments so she can be completely his.

Jericho takes the money and tells him that Camille slept with many men, but no names were taken. Rose tells Gabriel that he shouldn't bother with Camille -- she'll never belong to anyone, and she left because she loved Valmont.

Valmont meets another of his lover, Florence de Reignier (the one who calls him "pussycat"), for a quick tryst.

Valmont tries to convince Florence to write another letter, but she says they can show their love in person, as she has secured an apartment for them.

Majordome tells Camille that many mourners have arrived, and since she was a close friend, she should be the one to greet them.

Majordome presents Camille to the mourners, who are all intrigued by mystified by the beautiful young woman. Florence arrives and, with her friend, Eloise de Chalon, discusses Camille, whom neither of them has heard of.

Majordome tells Victoire to go back upstairs, but instead, Victoire tells Camille to act her way through it.

Camille joins the mourners and greets them demurely. Florence and Eloise pull her aside and ask her to tell them the truth about what happened to Genevieve.

Camille says that her mother and Genevieve were friends in Carcasonne, and Florence and Eloise keep questioning her, suspicious. Camile tries to extract herself, and Florence says loudly for all to hear that Camille is unknown.

Florence snidely says she is the only pussycat allowed in town, and Camille remembers the word in one of Valmont's letters.

Camille whispers to Florence, quoting her letter to Valmont, and says she shouldn't make an enemy of her. Florence quickly changes her tune and says Camille should be a friend to everyone.

Camille and Victoire return upstairs and laugh together. Camille explains that she used Florence's secret against her -- which was found in a letter to Valmont. Camille reminds Victoire that Victoire was the one who stole Valmont's letter in the first place.

Gabriel waits for Valmont in a dark corner outside Valmont's home. Valmont returns.

Gabriel asks how someone with such a low-paying job can afford carriages, fancy clothes, and dalliances with a married Comtesse. Valmont thinks Gabriel is one of his stepmother's spies and asks to be left alone.

Azolan is there with a note for Valmont, saying Florence is waiting in a carriage outside with keys to their new apartment.

Valmont enters the carriage, and it takes off. Florence tells him to get undressed. He does, and she tosses his shirt and britches out of the carriages.

Florence scolds him for sharing her letters with Merteuil. Valmont insists he did not. Florence says Merteuil's ward knows everything. Valmont responds that Merteuil had no ward.

Florence tells him it is a girl named Camille. Florence threatens to kill him if he exposes her and then tosses him out into the streets naked.

Later that night, Camille receives a note that reads, "I wait for you in the garden."

Camille heads to the garden, where Valmont is waiting for her. Valmont asks for his letters back. Camille says they belong to her now.

Camille says she did what she had to after going to the bridge. He swears he went to the bridge, but she tells him he was too late. Merteuil took her in and gave her all of this.

Valmont warns her to be careful among these people. She asks him to leave, and he says he will try to make it up to her.

Camille goes inside and views Genevieve's body. Majordome is there. Camille says Genevieve would never have thrown her to those people as he did. She kisses the corpse's cheek and leaves.

The next day, Majordome announces to Camille and Victoire that the Marquis, Jean de Merteuil, has returned and requests an audience with Camille.

Camille meets with Jean. He quickly calls her out on her lies about Genevieve's "friendship with Camille's mother." He orders Majordome to throw Camille out.

Camille asks Majordome if he gave Jean the letter Genevieve had with her when she died. Majordome denies knowledge of the letter. She urges him to handle the letter with care. He tells her to pack.

Camille tells Victoire it is over for them, and Victoire asks if they can finally go, and Camille agrees. At work, Pascal returns the key to Emile.

Emile asks to be left out of it and tells Pascal the commissioner wants to speak to him. The commissioner tells Pascal that an officer wants to ask him a few questions.

The officer in question is Gabriel, asking about the boy thief from the other day. Pascal says he was not at his desk at the time of the theft. Pascal assures them that nothing of value was stolen.

Gabriel mentions that the boy did not break into the vault but used a key. Pascal pulls the key out of his pocket. Gabriel accuses him of making a copy, but Pascal says he had nothing to do with it.

Gabriel says the boy ran to the Ile and that Gabriel has seen Pascal there. The commissioner fires Pascal.

Gabriel meets Pascal on the way out, telling Pascal that Camille belongs to him. Pascal says that Camille belongs to no one but herself. Gabriel threatens to ruin Pascal.

Majordome meets with Jean de Merteuil. Jean indicates that with Genevieve dead, Majordome no longer has a place in the Merteuil home.

Majordome considers the letter. He gives it to Camille. Camille reads it.

In the letter, Genevieve states that she will no longer live under her husband's tyranny. Majordome feels guilty for not being able to provide Genevieve with a miracle, and so he decides to put his faith in Camille.

Camille beautifies herself and joins Jean while he eats his supper. Camille tells him that Genevieve recognized her for her talent -- the ability to find people's secrets.

Camille quotes Genevieve's final letter to Jean and tells him his wife took her own life because of him. Jean refuses to believe it.

He asks her to show him the letter, but Camille refuses, saying Jean must do all he can to see she is welcomed in society, or she will expose the truth of his marriage. She also tells him that Majordome must not be let go.

Azolan tells Pascal to get to the funeral. Pascal goes through his list of potential wealthy lady lovers.

At Genevieve's funeral, Camille makes a show of being there for the Marquis. Florence and Eloise notice, suspicious but impressed.

As they are leaving, a woman, Jacqueline de Montrachet, urges the Marquis to put his "agony in God's hands."

Camille remembers a violent, snowy scene with Jacqueline and rushes out for air with Victoire at her side.

On the carriage ride home, Camille asks Jean about Jacqueline. Jean mocks Camille.

Later, Camille shares with Victoire that Jacqueline made promises and then threw her away. Camille assures Victoire that Victoire saved her. Camille is intent on making Jacqueline suffer.

Camille and Victoire head to the opera. Camille tells Victoire to meet her in the Merteuil box, and she heads to the Montrachet box.

Behind the curtain in the box, Camille sees a young man performing fellatio on another young man. Camille goes to the box only to find it empty. She asks where Jacqueline is, and one of the young men (Chevalier de Saint-Jacques) replies that Jacqueline hasn't been to the opera for years.

Camille looks out over the crowd from the Montrachet box and spies Victoire across the theatre in the Merteuil box. Victoire blows her a kiss.

Camille spies Valmont near the orchestra, kissing the hand of an older woman. Camille takes a seat in the Montrachet box, remembering Genevieve's words -- that she must conquer or die.
