Recap

Camille lounges while peeling an orange.

Valmont buys some meat on a stick but gives it to two hungry beggar children.

At home, Valmont shares an egg and bread with Azolan and informs him that he made a new friend at the opera, the Comtesse Lanceny, and their troubles will soon be over.

There is a knock at the door. It is a card inviting Valmont to Madame Berthe's at ten o'clock.

Valmont arrives at the dress shop and asks Madame Berthe if the Comtesse Lanceny is there. He heads to a dressing room and peers in, but not seeing the Comtesse, he goes to leave. It is Camille, and she turns around.

Valmont is surprised she is the one who invited him. She says he is looking shabby and offers him some new clothes. He undresses for her and tries on a new shirt.

She asks him what he would do to get her back, and he swears he would do anything, but she is hesitant to risk her newfound good fortune.

She orders him to seduce Jacqueline de Montrachet, which will include a letter from the woman in question. Valmont agrees.

In their carriage, Victoire chastises Camille for continuing to fraternize with Valmont.

Majordome pours coffee for Jean de Meurteuil. Jean toys with him, making him spill the coffee, then ordering him to clean it up. Jean requests the letter from Genevieve.

Chevalier Saint-Jacques rehearses his new opera but is frustrated with his leading "lady" (his lover). The singer pulls off his wig and storms away.

Valmont shows up, teasing his friend Chevalier. Valmont asks for a favor -- he needs him to find Jacqueline de Montrachet. Chevalier tells Valmont he will find her at the Church de Saint Sauveur.

Camille returns to find the black decorations of mourning being removed from the Merteuil home. Jean appears with the Comtesse Christine de Sevigny, who greets Camille warmly. Jean introduces them.

As the Comtesse and Jean walk away, arm in arm, Christine says she would have known about Camille, given how close she was with her cousin Genevieve.

Camille searches Genevieve's letters for mentions of the Comtesse de Sevigny. Victoire thinks they should leave, lest Camille is exposed tonight. Camille refuses to go until Valmont has done what he promised.

Valmont arrives at the Church de Saint Sauveur and asks where he can find Madame de Montrachet. A lady points her out, and Valmont sits behind the woman he believes to be Jacqueline.

Valmont tells her she has bewitched him, and they go back to her carriage, where he performs oral sex on her.

Valmont tells her he is headed to America the next day and asks her for a letter. He calls her Jacqueline, and she tells him she is Candice Montrachet. Humbled, he kisses her hand and leaves the carriage.

Gabriel pays a visit to the Vicomtesse Ondine de Valmont. He tells her he is there to discuss Pascal. She says she will not pay Pascal's drinking debts or for his illegitimate children -- she no longer considers Pascal family.

Gabriel asks why she regards him so. She says a man without morals has no place in her family -- he has been disinherited and is not dangerous. Gabriel says he will find proof of Valmont's deeds to see that he is locked up.

Camille asks Majordome for information about the Comtesse de Sevigny. Majordome tells her he won't compromise his position anymore. Camille reminds him that she has saved him once already, and they can thrive together.

Victoire helps Camille get dressed for dinner. As they head down, Majordome gives Camille Genevieve's old prayer book.

Camille enters the salon, where the Comte de Sevigny is singing. As the song concludes, Jean introduces Camille to the Comte and Emilie, daughter of the Sevignys, as well as Chevalier Danceny, the music teacher.

Majordome arrives to tell them dinner is served and whispers to Victoire that she should look in the prayer book. She discovers that he has written facts about the Comtesse de Sevigny for Camille.

The guests head into dinner. Victoire hands the book to Camille. Camille reads some of Majordome's clues -- Christine called Genevieve "General," and Genevieve called Christine "Musket."

At dinner, Jean toasts Genevieve. The discussion turns to Christine's search to find a husband for Emilie, and the Comte mentions that Christine is a favorite of the Queen.

Christine asks how Camille met Genevieve. Camille looks to her prayer book, suggesting a prayer, which she reads, and learns another fact about Genevieve -- that she liked to go to Geneva in the spring.

Camille shares that this is how she knew Genevieve and mentions that Genevieve referred to Christine as "Musket," though she didn't speak of her often. Camille shares that her own mother is also dead.

Christine expresses a desire to have heard them all speak, and Emilie suggests they ask Genevieve by holding a seance with a new mesmerist in town. Camille cites Genevieve's faith and how it would be against her wishes. Jean agrees to the "summoning."

Later, Christine and Jean laugh together at Camille's discomfort. Jean does not believe in ghosts, but Christine assures him the mesmerist will be helpful in ousting Camille. Christine urges him to find a new wife.

Camille sends Valmont a letter, asking how his task is going. He tosses the letter into the fire.

Washerwomen work on the banks of the Seine, where a woman's corpse is discovered. Rose arrives on the scene, believes she recognizes the body, and tells someone to send for Gabriel.

Gabriel arrives. Rose tells him it is Camille, pulling the necklace Camille wore from the corpse.

Azolan gets some information about Jacqueline for Valmont -- she is called the "ghost" as she always dresses in white, but she is generous to the poor.

Valmont goes into the church and spots Jacqueline taking communion. He also takes communion, then gets up and follows her out, trying to give her back "her" red glove, but it is clearly not hers. She admonishes him for vanity and leaves.

Valmont follows, attempting to introduce himself, but the footman knocks him to the ground.

At home, Azolan wonders why Camille would set Valmont an impossible task if she loves him. Valmont writes a letter to Camille, saying she has set out to humiliate him, not to punish him. Azolan delivers the letter.

Camille is angry that Valmont describes Jacqueline as "pious." She writes back, saying Pascal was a liar for saying he would do anything to win her back.

Victoire delivers the letter. Valmont says there will be no more games. Victoire is relieved. Valmont berates Victoire for causing this mess by stealing his letters and orders her out.

Gabriel accosts Valmont in the street and punches him in the stomach.

Gabriel takes Valmont to the mortuary and shows him what he believes to be Camille's body. Valmont asks him how he could think it is Camille. Gabriel shows Valmont the "proof." Valmont is flippant to Gabriel and leaves.

The mesmerist sets up an elaborate tank in the front hall of the Merteuil home. Victoire shows Camille some of Genevieve's writing in the prayer book that reads, "Forgive me."

Camille shows up at Valmont's, telling him she doesn't want to fight. He lets her in. She says she wants to give him another chance to complete his task, but he insists Jacqueline is not for mortal men.

Valmont mentions Gabriel and asks Camille why Gabriel has a vendetta against him because of her. Camille says Gabriel believed he could "own" her.

Valmont tells her he lost his job because of Gabriel and now Gabriel believes he has found Camille's body in the Seine. Valmont tells Camille he "confirmed" that the body was her to protect her. She thanks him.

Valmont asks if they are even. She says they will be once he has made Jacqueline love him.

Valmont purchases a sermon from a parchment seller and starts studying the bible. Azolan gives him a haircut.

Jean calls on Camille in her room, asking that she come down for the "summoning." She reminds him that his reputation is in her hands. He mentions that his wife never stayed in Geneva, only stopped there on her way to Versailles, and that the Majordome couldn't have known this.

Victoire asks Majordome for Genevieve’s letter. He takes it from its hiding spot and gives it to Victoire, telling her to put it back as soon as she is done reading it. She discerns that the words read, "Ariadne, forgive me." Victoire puts the letter back.

Eerie music plays as the guests surround the mesmerist's strange contraption.

The mesmerist addresses them, saying he will speak to the dead on their behalf and that the fluid in the tank will act as a conduit. He orders them to shut their eyes and hold the metal rods attached to the tank.

Victoire whispers to Camille about Ariadne. All the guests close their eyes and hold the rods. The mesmerist says there is great darkness in the room.

Victoire accidentally knocks over and smashes a vase. Christine plays this up as Genevieve's spirit, even though Victoire admits it was her.

Christine claims she sees Genevieve in the water, crying that there is an imposter among them. Victoire goes to stop Christine, but Jean holds Victoire back just as Camille calls out, "Ariadne!" Jean orders her to be silent.

Camille makes eye contact with the mesmerist. A flashback memory -- Camille is in the snow, behind a gate, staring up at Jacqueline in the window. Camille slices her wrists open and falls to the ground.

Victoire has a seizure, and Majordome carries her away. Jean orders the mesmerist out, but the mesmerist says he will not leave until he knows Victoire is safe.

Victoire lies unconscious while Camille and the mesmerist sit beside her. The mesmerist notes it is the "falling sickness" and usually happens after something significant, an intuition of sorts.

Camille says she made up Ariadne and asks him to leave. The mesmerist takes her hands and tells her she is in pain from a great wrong done to her.

Camille asks the mesmerist what he has seen. He tells her to forgive in order to find the light. She says he cannot know of her pain, or he wouldn't expect her to forgive.

Camille goes out for a walk.

Valmont, dressed modestly and plainly, attends a church service, where he watches Jacqueline.

As the service concludes, Valmont approaches the priest, asking what he can do about the starving children. Jacqueline passes by and overhears.

Camille steals a bucket of blood from a butcher.

Pascal asks the priest about the morality of the church when orphans are starving. The priest says he does not know how to help him. Pascal offers to help the church to prevent the suffering of the children.

Jacqueline asks his name, and Pascal introduces himself as Monsieur Lucien. She tells him she is Madame de Montrachet.

Camille watches Jacqueline and Pascal from a distance.

Jacqueline tells Pascal his words moved her.

Camille watches, remembering a time when Jacqueline cast Camille out, despite Camille's apologies.

Camille throws the bucket of pig's blood at Jacqueline's face, drenching her.
