Callie and Mariana drive a Uhaul to LA to start their new lives and jobs. They park in the wrong area when they get to their new home. The Coterie was suggested by a guy named Gael Mariana worked with, but when they get there it's a communal where they have to share a bathroom and kitchen.

The place is an old theater and a bit of a dump. Callie isn't pleased, but she can't afford anything with Callie's salary.

Their uhaul is towed and all of their belongings stolen so they go to a thrift store to get new things they get drunk on their first night, and oversleep. They run into Gael on their way to work.

Callie acts like she doesn't know him because Mariana has a crush on him, but she met him the previous night and slept with him.

Mariana is introduced to her team at work, but they aren't receptive to working with a woman and treat her terribly. She feels like an outcast and seeks advice from another female engineer.

Mariana tries to pitch an idea to the CEO after being told not to and gets in trouble with HR. She calls Callie for comfort and Callie comes to see her despite being swamped.

Callie doesn't do well at work either. She butts heads with Rebecca and with Judge Wilson for being a liberal, and he reminds her that he doesn't consider himself a conservative judge and that she won't have the influence on him she hoped to have.

She's the clerk on the case for a victim of police shooting that her new housemate Malika is an activist for,.when the judge on the case is sick and Wilson takes over. She can't reveal anything though so she is on a tough spot with Malika.

Callie and Mariana get to know the rest of the gang over "family dinner." Davi is a plus sized social media influencer, Alice is the manager and a lesbian who won't come out to her parents, and Dennis is a ladies man.

Later, thanks to Malika, they help Callie and Mariana with furniture for their room.

Callie confesses that she slept with Gael twice. The first night when she went to is room to study his art and the next night when she and Mariana fought. At first Mariana is annoyed, but then they see Gael having sex with a mysterious man through his bedroom window. They're shocked.
