Deny, Deny, Deny
Grey's Anatomy Season 2 Episode 4 (10/16/05)
As Cristina recovers from her collapse in the O.R., and the termination of her pregnancy that followed, she proves to be a difficult patient. To say the least. With a nagging mother by her side, an unhealthy obsession with work and the inability to handle her swirling emotions, the recovering Dr. Yang is a ticking time bomb.
Even more unstable is Meredith's mother, Dr. Ellis Grey, who has George and Richard struggling to keep up as she continually leaves her room. A former surgeon with advanced Alzheimer's, she is only partly cognizant of where she is and what she's doing -- particularly at the end of the episode when she suddenly embraces Richard, her former lover.
Alex, who has been showing a likable side of late (with intermittent doses of Evil Spawn thrown in for good measure) finally works up the nerve to ask Izzie out. His confidence is shattered, however, when Richard informs him that he has failed the medical boards and must retake them within four months. If he fails again, his career is over.
The normally hard-nosed Miranda shows her softer side with Jeremiah, a 26-year old cystic fibrosis patient, who she has treated since her days as an intern. Jeremiah, who has been battling and raising money to fight the disease all his life, is in bad shape. His latest travails require risky surgery and Addison's involvement, delaying her departure from SGH.
Despite remaining in Seattle to treat Jeremiah, she hands Derek divorce papers and says she'll be on the first plane out of town if he'll sign. Addison matter-of-factly informs Meredith that while she doesn't want someone who doesn't want her back, she's not leaving town if there's a chance Derek will reconcile.
Cristina finally cracks, bursting into tears and appearing as vulnerable as we've ever seen her. Fortunately, Dr. Burke is there to help pick up the pieces. As the episode concludes, one of Derek's patients confides in him that he cheated on his wife, and regrets throwing away the one thing that matters most in his life. This gives Derek pause, and as the credits roll, Meredith is shocked to see the still-unsigned divorce papers fall out of Derek's hands.
