Seems like everybody's talking at Seattle Grace.
Meredith, in particular, has become the subject of water cooler banter after being dumped by Derek. She's clearly jaded and a little whiny, which may or may not continue for several months. But Cristina and Izzie have got something to distract her. Something big. The two "stole" a patient from the psych wing of the hospital and are holding him hostage. Sort of. The reason? He's pregnant. Yes, he.
The patient, Shane, is convinced he's pregnant, and certainly looks the part. Shane's wife is also pregnant, which further fascinates the staff. In the end, they become a public spectacle, which Meredith can relate to. She loses it and ushered everyone away from them. Shane is discovered to have a massive tumor growing inside him, rather than a baby. We aren't entirely sure what medical jargon was used to describe it... but it's gross!
Preston and Cristina are worried that people will soon be talking about them, and the fact that they're dating. When George brings the relationship up with Dr. Burke twice, the always-professional surgeon decides to tell Richard himself, before the chief hears about it through the grapevine. Cristina protests, to no avail. Richard is clearly grateful to have heard about the relationship from Preston himself, and takes the news well.
After showing up late for rounds, Alex is saddled with an 18-year old girl who is partially paralyzed and considering a surgery that would allow her more freedom. While he's initially too cool for her (of course), Alex goes on to forge a friendship with his young lackey. The patient convinces Alex to express his true feelings for Izzie, and in turn, the macho doc impresses upon her the need to stand up to her overbearing parents and assert her independence.
Derek and Addison also have something to talk about. Their future. When Dr. and Mrs. Dr. Shepherd undergo counseling to determine if their marriage can work, she's unwilling to move to Seattle. He's unwilling to cut himself off from Meredith. As the episode progresses, however, both come around. There is still much work to do, but Richard convinces Addison to stay at SGH for her own reasons, not just Derek's. Miranda, meanwhile, helps Derek realize that he has to back away from Meredith for her own good.
[narrating] "Communication. It's the first thing we really learn in life. The funny thing is, once we grow up, learn our words and really start talking, the harder it becomes to know what to say. Or how to ask for what we really need."MEREDITH

ALEX: [to teenage patient who asks him to kiss her]: "Hey, listen. For a kiss to be really good, you want it to mean something... to be with someone you can't get out of your head, so that when your lips finally touch you feel it everywhere... a kiss so hot and so deep that you never want to come up for air. You can't cheat your first kiss. You don't want to. Trust me. When you find that right person for a first kiss, it's everything.
