Daniel's father's Alzheimer's continues to worsen. He is kicked out of his home and comes to live with Daniel before deciding to go to a facility to live.

After ruling out revenge plots, rival competitors, even his wife, Daniel concludes that the doctor set up an elaborate scheme in case his own disease ever interfered with his work. After failing a series of tests he was required to take every day, a gas canister went off, killing him. He didn't want to live unless he was at full capacity.
