Recap

Ben leaps into a basketball coach. A player injures out and he sends in Number 23, Gia.

2012 Lakehill High School.

At the last second, Gia shoots for three and scores, winning the game for Lakehill.

People in the crowd boo the win, calling Lakehill cheaters. Addison reveals that Gia is trans and also the daughter of Ben’s host, Carlos Mendez.

The girls in the locker room debate whether Gia should’ve played or not.

Ben is called on the carpet by Principal Krager for putting Gia in the game. He’s told to get the team to regionals without playing his daughter.

Amanda’s mother is upset she was pulled from the game. She insists her daughter could’ve kept playing. Ben defends his choice. She’s unimpressed.

Other players come out and Ben asks if Gia’s in the locker room. They remind him Gia’s not allowed to change with them. Gia opens the door of the janitor’s closet, where she’s been changing. A bunch of supplies fall on her.

At HQ, Addison discusses Gia with Ian who knew of Gia when they were in school. They remember the basketball win even though originally Gia didn’t play and Lakehill lost. Addison figures Gia won’t run away now that the team’s on a winning streak. Ian says they still remember Gia running away and disappearing forever.

At the Silverlake Sunset Junction, Magic and Jenn walk in, looking for information on Ben’s activities before leaping. They’re looking for someone called Dottie who reached out to Ben six months before the leap and asked him to meet them here.

They meet Dottie who denies ever meeting Ben. They tell her Ben met with her on March 13, 2022. Dottie demands to know who they are. March 13 falls in the week where something strange happened to her.

She invites them to come back the following night for her poetry slam event. She promises to tell them what she knows then.

Ben and Gia return home to Miriam who sends Gia upstairs to get ready for dinner. She orders Ben into the kitchen for a talk.

She confronts him about putting Gia in the game when they’d agreed to keep her out of the spotlight. She’s afraid of Gia becoming a target and she’s angry that Carlos/Ben would put her in the game, knowing it would make Gia happy while triggering retaliation.

Addison shows up as Ben’s getting a couch ready to sleep on. They discuss the situation. Gia is the first out trans student the school’s ever had. Ben wonders if he’s capable of parenting a trans teen.

Addison recalls the trans ban in the military. She feels ashamed for not speaking up when thousands of soldiers and officers were discharged for being trans.

Addison warns him he needs to keep Gia from running away or they’ll lose her forever.

In the morning, the Mendez family sits down to breakfast. Miriam and Gia remind Ben there’s the car wash fundraiser and Gia’s group session on the schedule.

The group facilitator, Kate, takes time to welcome Gia and unpack the aftermath of the game. She joins her friends in a lively conversation about Twilight and Hunger Games. Ben sits down with the parents who voice their fears and hopes for their children.

Ian watches the teens in their dance circle. Addison comments how great the group is for them. She checks in on how Ian’s feeling. They confess that they tried to commit suicide when they were younger. Addison promises if they ever feel like they’re in a dark place again that she will be there for them.

Ben and Miriam drop Gia off at the carwash, offering to stay, which she rejects as “gross”.

When she strips down to a tank, Ben decides to stick around.

A carful of boys drives by to throw eggs at Gia and telling her she’ll never be a real girl. She throws a squeegee after them in retaliation and hits Amanda’s mom’s car. Ben rushes out to see if she’s okay which mortifies her. Amanda’s mother, Margie, is angry about the damage to her car.

Addison arrives and tells Ben that the reason Gia is never found is that she dies after running away and the police misgender her body.

Back home, Miriam takes a call from Principal Krager who has called an emergency meeting. She and Ben/Carlos will be meeting with her the next day. Addison tells Ben that Ziggy predicts Carlos will be fired. Ben tells Miriam and Gia they’ll fight this. Gia offers to quit the team. She’s tired of fighting.

At Dottie’s poetry slam, Magic realizes that Dottie was leaped into.

At Principal Krager’s office, Gia and Amanda sit outside while their parents meet with Krager inside.

Principal Krager reiterates the agreement that Gia wouldn’t play in the games just as Gia enters and hears it. She feels betrayed by her parents. She runs off, taking the van.

Brainstorming where she might’ve gone, Ben realizes they need to contact the group facilitator.

The facilitator is arguing with Gia about her choices. They shoot baskets and she shares what her teen years were like.

Ben and Miriam arrive and the family hashes out the issues, airing all the problems with their choices to try to keep Gia safe.

When Gia gets to the school to suit up for the game, the team (including Amanda) brings her into the locker room and tells her she’s done changing in the janitor’s closet.

They prepare for the game, cheering “Not without Gia!” as a team motivator.

Ben hands over his starting line, which includes Gia. Principal Krager calls him on it but Ben points out she wants the team to regionals and this lineup will do it.

The stands are full of competing protestors. The anti-trans people throw Gia off and she plays distracted, letting the other team get by her and score. Ben calls a timeout and gives them all a pep talk.

At HQ, the team is cheering the game. Addison invites Ian to watch the game in the imaging chamber so they can actually experience it immersively.

The vice principal comes down to talk to Ben. He’s supposed to tell Carlos/Ben to pull Gia but he won’t because that would defeat the purpose of sport. He also reminds Ben that he’s the union rep so if they try to fire him, Carlos/Ben should call on him.

As Gia shoots another three-pointer, Ben leaps. Addison and Ian are in the stands hugging.

At the Sunset Junction, Magic sits down with Dottie and explains about leapers. He asks if she’s ever wondered about who leaped into her. She pulls out a sketch pad and shows him her sketches of the face that haunts her. It’s Ian.

Ben leaps into a chef in a restaurant kitchen.

Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 12 Quotes

Addison: Ian, Gia only played because Ben put her in right now. As soon as she was on the court, Ziggy started updating.
Ian: I’ve been bested by my own technology.

Janay: It is a little weird though, isn’t it? Coach waits this long to put his own kid in the game?
Shruti: She’s an alternate. That’s how alternates work.
Janay: She’s been on the team all season.
Shruti: You never had an issue before.
Janay: And I don’t have an issue now. Just sayin’ it’s a little weird.
Amanda: Well, I have an issue. I don’t think it’s fair.
Janay: Why? Cause she’s trans or because she took your shot?
Amanda: I don’t know. Both.
Shruti: Way to be a team player.
