Recap

Opening card: “In 1995, theorizing that one could time travel within their own lifetime, Doctor Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. After years of trying to bring him back home, the project was eventually abandoned. Until now…”

A woman sits at a keyboard in a server room. Her screen shows her the window calculation. “Duplicate code removal = 2.41GB, Reduction in Inefficiencies = 12.01%, CPU Performance Improvement = 24.76%” She seems shocked. She contacts Ben Song.

Ben and Addison are hosting an engagement party. Ben doesn’t love parties and suggests they run away to be alone. Jenn interrupts to point out that Ian’s arguing with the DJ.

They get Ian to come over and they starts talking about work. They shut them down gently. Magic joins them.

Ben gets pushed into making a speech.

Addison promises she just needs another thirty minutes to talk to some people. As she leaves, Ben’s phone beeps.

The woman’s texts are there, urgently needing him to contact her in order to catch a window before it closes.

“Hey, just got a readout. If we’re gonna do this, it has to be now.” “Our window is closing, where are you?” “Ben!! Call me!!!” “Running out of time!!!” “Just sent you the the projections via email” “CALL ME ASAP!!”

Ben looks conflicted for a moment and then leaves.

The servers light up as Ben enter a large space in a skin suit and steps onto a platform. The accelerator activates.

He regains consciousness at the wheel of a Ford. A small TV is showing David Bowie at Live Aid. A guy seated next to him starts talking, startling him. The guy is questioning whether they’re making a mistake. He calls Ben “Nick”, puts on a balaclava, and pulls a gun. He gets out of the van.

Ben sees that his reflection shows a different person. He gets out and looks around. It’s clearly the 80s. The movie theater is showing The Goonies and St. Elmo’s Fire.

He pulls out his wallet and his ID is for Nick Rounder from Pennsylvania.

Addison calls his name and comes towards him asking why he leaped before they were ready. Ben doesn’t recognize her.

When she tries to explain, the rest of the gang comes running out of the bank carrying a large crate, yelling at Ben/Nick to get in the van. Addison gives a short explanation and directs him to get in the van.

Addison talks him through driving a stick shift and evading two police cars to get to the gang’s base, a restaurant on York.

They park and unload the crate. The ringleader, Ryan, reminds Ben/Nick that this was only phase 1.

Left alone, Addison explains things to Ben. She glitches and disappears.

Back at the project, Addison sees Ben glitch out. She leaves the imaging chamber. She tells Ian about the issue with the imaging chamber. They inform her that Ziggy is off-line because Ben uploaded a large piece of new code just before he leaped.

Addison hypothesizes that Ben figures out how to get back from a leap but the memory loss has erased his knowledge of it.

Ian points out that Ziggy is more of a priority than the imaging chamber.

Magic and Jenn enter. Magic’s on the phone with the Pentagon. Jenn informs Addison that all the security footage was wiped.

Magic says he’ll have to tell the Pentagon the truth. Addison protests that if he does, they’ll shut down the project and Ben will have no way home.

Ian says the chamber’s back online.

Ben is hiding out in the washroom when Addison finds him again. She tells him that he leaped without telling anyone and has caused a lot of problems back home for the team.

Addison gives him the background on Quantum Leap and Sam Beckett. She encourages him to figure out what Nick needs to fix so he can trigger a leap and they can pull him home.

Ryan comes to find Nick/Ben to tell him they’re opening the crate.

The crate has a lot of C4. The boss, Cole, questions Nick/Ben’s abilities and commitment to the heist. Ryan vouches for Nick. Cole tells him they have to meet Horace.

Addison and Jenn consult on Nick Rounder. Jenn has no info on Nick but discovers the C4 is used in an explosion outside a museum on the day of LiveAid.

Ziggy comes back on line.

Ryan’s wife Katie and their daughter are outside the restaurant. Katie had a dialysis appointment and they’re behind on payments. Ryan reassures her their problems will be solved soon.

Addison reappears and confirms that Ryan is the reason Ben leaped into Nick. During the heist, Ryan will be shot dead.

On their way to Horace, Nick/Ben tries to talk Ryan out of the heist. Ryan goes through all the troubles they’re facing. He doesn’t see another option.

At Horace’s jewel shop, Ben realizes he understands Horace when he’s speaking Romanian. Horace has a fake Hope Diamond necklace for them. He tries to renegotiate the deal. Ben uses Addison’s intel and what he understood in Romanian and bluffs Horace into backing down.

At HQ, Jenn tries to tender her resignation. Magic rejects it, giving her orders to find out who Ben was meeting with before he leaped.

Outside Horace’s shop, Ben tries to tell Ryan about what he knows. Ryan still can’t see another way to help Katie.

When they bring the necklace to Cole, his henchmen pull a gun on Nick/Ben and accuse him of being Matt Shaw, an undercover cop.

This blows Ryan’s trust in him. Ben talks them out of killing him but he ends up bound in the kitchen.

Magic tracks Ian down and asks him about monitoring Addison and Ben. Ian asks for a moment and expresses their guilt about Ben leaping. They point out nothing makes sense since the Hope Diamond was never stolen. Magic stops him at that to reveal that actually, it was stolen.

Magic has Jenn look up Operation Blue Glass, a cover-up on the Hope Diamond’s theft. With the details, they think they can help Ben foil the heist.

Addison talks Ben through freeing himself from the zip-ties in the kitchen. He comments maybe she should be the one leaping and she reveals that that was the plan. She was supposed to be the leaper. Ben was supposed to be the guide.

Once free, Ben wants to head to the museum. Addison advises he just call 9-1-1 and report the theft of the Hope Diamond. Ben hesitates, not wanting Ryan to be arrested with the crew.

Dressed in a tux, Ben enters the museum gala. He punches out the henchman, Pete, to stop him from locking down the security guys.

Ben finds Ryan. He tells him he’s going to stop the heist.

Ben intercepts Charlie by tangoing her on the dance floor. He tries to talk her into letting Ryan go. Instead, she causes a panic by firing her weapon, driving people towards the explosion timed to go off in minutes.

Ryan points out the car the explosives are in. They don’t have anything to cut the wires with so Ben dumps the bomb down a manhole.

In the aftermath, Ryan thanks him and promises to be honest with Katie. Addison confirms Ryan and Katie get a happy ending.

Ben’s leap starts but Ian and Ziggy aren’t able to find his signal.

Jenn stops Magic from flying to the Pentagon to report on Ben’s leap. Jenn informs him the mystery woman from the surveillance footage was wearing a Vietnam navy platoon ring from the platoon that Al Calavicci served with.

Magic realizes the mystery woman is Al’s daughter, Janice.

Addison finds Ben’s ring at their apartment and watches a video he recorded for her.

Ben lands in an astronaut about to launch.

Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

Look, I’m not trying to tell you how to do your job. I’m just merely offering a counterpoint from someone who has impeccable taste in music.

Ian

Addison: Have you been hiding?
Ben: Hiding? No, I was just in a different section of the apartment.
Addison: You mean the bathroom where you were hiding from the party you didn’t want to have?
Ben: I love parties. Having everyone in here, touching all our stuff. I would’ve proposed way sooner if I knew we got to do this.
