Charlie is 12 years old and in a coma. His father lost custody and blames himself for the accident that put Charlie here. He sneaks in as a hospital volunteer in order to visit his son.

Kara Saunders is the mean girl who passes out in cheerleading practice to end up in the hospital with heart failure. She may end up on the bottom of the transplant list because of her history of drug use.

When Kara is unconscious, Charlie makes contact with her and asks her to get him pizza to help wake him up. She does but it doesn't seem to work. 

Emma has a serious eating disorder who flirts with long-term pediatric ward resident Leo who is wheelchair bond and later with Jordi who is about to have his leg amputated due to cancer.

Dash has cystic fibrosis and tries to score alcohol to throw a party for Jordi on the roof the night before his surgery.

Nurse Jackson and Dr. McAndrew try to keep the kids in line while getting them well.
