The KGB decide they want to stop an assassin that they hired. The Jennings are tasked with finding the assassin and stopping him. In order to protect the targeted scientists, they planted a bomb in a car and detonated it after the targets were safely out of harm's way in order to alert the US government. The FBI protected the scientists while hunting down the assassin too.
