Recap

1985: Midge does stand up, talking about her break up with Susie.

1990, New York City: At the Friars Club, the cooks talk about their favorite comedians. They take a look at who is being honored tonight -- someone they've never heard of, Susie Myerson.

The roasters arrive (including Mike Carr, known as "The Dean"), chatting about what they will say.

Susie arrives in a hotboxed car.

She enters the club and sits beside the podium, where Stewart Jones, the emcee, greets her and announces she has arrived. She's getting a "Testi-Roastial," at her request, a combination of a roast and testimonials.

Heather gets Susie a plate of dinner.

Stewart recounts a day back in 1970 -- "The Triple Crown."

1970: Susie golfs, pitching The French Connection to anyone who'll listen, but she keeps getting shot down. Finally, she gets big-time producer Sol to greenlight it -- no one knows what she said to Sol to make that happen.

Susie runs into another producer and pitches a hit sitcom, That's Our Time, which she made up on the spot. It runs for seven years.

Susie gets the intel from the caddies at the golf club. She pitches Jesus Christ Superstar to an A&M exec and lands it.

During the Testi-Roastial: Aaron Lebowitz, a Hollywood manager, takes to the podium. He roasts Susie. Aaron mentions that he used to work under Harry Drake, Susie's mentor.

1963, Toots Shor: An actor named Taylor tells Susie that Harry is losing it. Clients are dropping him, the most recent being Spencer Tracy.

Taylor lays out his dreams for Susie, saying he wants her to represent him -- Harry got him nothing. Susie tells Taylor that his movies sucked and that Harry made him a star.

During the Testi-Roastial: Aaron recounts that, due to Susie's loyalty, Harry handed over his best clients to her when he was hospitalized and couldn't work any longer.

After the Testi-Roastial: Aaron tells the guys around a table how it actually happened -- Susie forged documents and forced Harry to sign them while he was in the hospital, and she didn't even allow his family in to see him.

Stewart recounts it differently, saying Harry's daughter and Susie worked together to dupe Harry. Ray Ortiz says his sister Linda is a nurse who was working that night, and she saw it all.

Circa 1963: Susie was visiting Harry. Harry was being lewd. Susie asks where his daughter Ruth is, and he doesn't know. Harry tells Susie to learn to play golf, and he will give her his clubs.

Nurse Linda returns to provide him with water. Together they watch old Buster Keaton movies, eating jello. He tells her he's dying. She tells him he was the only one who ever noticed her and thanks him for it.

Harry tells her he will sign over his most prominent clients to her, and she should keep them focused and happy, saying she's the only one he can trust.

Later that night, Harry is comfortable on pain medication, with Nurse Linda watching over him. Harry calls for Ruth. Susie takes his hand and says, "I'm here, Dad," and he passes away.

During the Testi-Roastial: Ray Ortiz takes the podium. He talks about Susie's gambling problem.

After the Testi-Roastial: Carmine Streeto mentions "that thing" with Dinah Rutledge (Susie's number two, who runs the New York branch). It all started with "that thing" when Susie made those guys her muscle.

1961: Susie asks Dinah to get her in at the Copacabana. Dinah is quiet. Susie gets a look at her and notices a black eye. Dinah tells Susie it was her drunk boyfriend Ronald, and she has kicked him out.

Susie jokingly tells Dinah she'll need Susie's approval for all future boyfriends. Susie tells Dinah to go home and rest, giving her some money.

Susie asks Frank and Nicky for a favor. They rough Ronald up.

After the Testi-Roastial: Carmine explains that the mob had a piece of every client except Maisel. When the other comics as Carmine why, he says he will tell them after he goes to the bathroom.

During the Testi-Roastial: Stewart introduces Mike to the podium. Mike talks about Susie, how they met on the Gordon Ford show, and how it's the 10th anniversary of the passing of old George Toledano.

Mike mentions how he loved George and misses him.

After The Testi-Roastial: Aaron Lebowitz explains that Mike hated George, but George made Gordon a star. Aaron explains that Mike was the talent guy on Gordon Ford, so he started getting friendly with Susie.

1961, Toots Shor: While Midge is chatting with the other writers, Susie and Mike confer. Susie asks who made the "anyone who works on the show can't be on the show" rule. Mike tells her it was George. (As Aaron tells it, Susie never liked George).

Midge re-introduces Susie to George, but he doesn't remember her, which Susie hates.

Susie attends a Gordon Ford party and witnesses George yelling at Mike. Susie finds Mike and lets him rant about George and Gordon. Susie suggests snooping.

Susie and Mike go through George's desk. He has a locked drawer. Susie uses a letter opener, and Mike leaves.

Susie finds a folder and presents it to Mike.

George arrives the following day, cheerily greeting everyone. Upon entering his office, he sees Alan and the legal team, who inform him that Gordon wants him gone within the hour.

George had been holding up Gordon's contract. Gordon was furious. Mike got George's job.

Susie feeds her pigeons with delight.

During the Testi-Roastial: Mike signs off to his old friend by giving her the double bird, which she gives him back, along with a hug.

After the Testi-Roastial: Carmine returns from relieving himself, and the others ask him to explain how Midge got out from under the mob.

Carmine tells them about Joel, Midge's first husband. Ray mentions Joel just got out of prison. Stewart mentions Joel got caught up in an FBI sweep. Carmine explains that Joel knew Susie was in with the mob and didn't want Midge involved.

1961: Susie returns to her office to find Joel tearing it apart, looking for her secret books. He finds them in a compartment under the carpet, which reveals how much of a cut the mob was getting off Midge's earnings.

Dinah's cousin Dougie, a cop, handcuffs Joel and starts to take him away. Susie follows and says it's a misunderstanding and asks him to let Joel go. Dougie leaves.

Susie insists to Joel that she can fix it and promises to work tirelessly for Midge's success. Joel realizes what he has to do.

Joel meets with Frank and Nicky at a Christmas party in their bar. They sit down together. Joel tells them they can't have Midge. He offers himself up instead -- he's got The Button Club in Chinatown, which he runs well.

Joel suggests they give him financing to expand and let go of Midge. Frank tells Joel that Midge is starting to make good money, but Joel insists he wants the mother of his children clear of the mob.

Frank and Nicky confer privately with their boss. A young girl offers Joel a Christmas cookie, which he takes. Frank and Nicky return and tell Joel their boss likes the idea, suggesting expansion into new cities with Joel as a frontman.

They agree to leave Midge alone. Frank wishes him Happy Hannukah.

After the Testi-Roastial: As Carmine tells it, Joel skirted the law for a long time, but when he finally got caught, he ensured Archie didn't face charges. Joel did the time and made sure he had money stashed away somewhere. Midge never deserted him.

During the Testi-Roastial: Carmine is at the podium, roasting Susie about her ambiguous sexuality. He introduces a special guest -- Tessie.

Tessie takes the podium, reading jokes off a piece of paper that had all been done earlier in the evening, laughing even though no one else in the audience does.

Emotionally, Tessie expresses her love for Susie and her belief in her singing career, claiming Susie is responsible for Tessie's hit disco single "Never Ever Gonna Stop." Tessie proceeds to sing it. Susie gets the music cut off, and Tessie makes her exit.

After the Testi-Roastial: The roasters remark on how weird the Tessie portion of the evening was.

Aaron mentions that Susie was a great manager who would do anything for her clients, and he brings up the Hawaiian wedding story.

1973, Hawaii: Susie chats to Dinah back in New York. Susie remarks how peaceful she feels. Midge enters in a white pantsuit and veil, saying she cannot get married. Susie hangs up on Dinah.

Susie tries to convince Midge she must get married, citing the expense and the inconvenience. Midge says she doesn't love him. She doesn't even like her outfit. It was supposed to be a small wedding. He doesn't make her laugh.

Abe and Rose enter, extolling the virtues of the groom, Philip Roth. Midge says she's still in love with Joel. Susie tells Abe and Rose that Midge is planning to back out.

Midge starts making a mental pro/con list. Susie reminds her that they flew in Marvin Gaye, Jim Croce, and Grand Funk Railroad. Abe asks if they will get their money back since they paid for the cake.

Midge says she can't do it, and she can't tell Philip either. Susie recounts things she had done for Midge over the years, all for her career, but draws the line at the personal stuff. Midge starts to cry.

Later, Susie phones Philip to tell him the news. She calls Grand Funk Railroad to cancel them. She tells Abe and Rose she'll get their money back for the very expensive cake. Susie tries to bargain with the baker who made the cake.

After the Testi-Roastial: Aaron explains that Susie couldn't say no to Midge. Midge drove herself hard, and Susie knew that and respected it. Susie was loyal. Susie loved Midge, in a way.

Carmine asks what happened between Susie and Midge and why they fell out. No one seems to know. Mike Carr joins them, saying he knows -- Susie and Midge both told him (while drunk). Their stories differed slightly, but the jist of it was the same.

1985: Joel, Midge, Chava, Ethan, and baby Rose attend synagogue. Joel seems nervous. The FBI enter. Joel apologizes to Midge and hands her a letter.

Joel calmly approaches the FBI agents, tells them they are looking for him, and allows them to cuff him. Midge insists it's a mistake, but Joel says it's not. They take Joel away. The rabbi continues.

Later, Midge sits alone in the synagogue. Susie enters. Without looking at her, Midge tells Susie that Joel was arrested during service. Susie asks why. Midge tells her it's racketeering, fraud, and money laundering, and he did it for Midge.

Midge explains that because Susie sold her to the mob, Joel made a trade. Susie argues that Midge knew about Frank and Nicky, but Midge counters that she thought she was free of them. Susie justifies this as "show business."

Midge asks who owns Susie now, accusing her of booking Midge into casinos to pay off gambling debts. Midge insists she was tired and didn't want those gigs. She asks Susie how much she owes the casinos.

Susie protests, saying they are friends. Midge balks at this, saying Susie is only calling her a friend now that she's been caught. Midge tells Susie she is ordering an audit of her books. She compares Susie to George Toledano.

Susie is insulted and lays into Midge, claiming she's the one who made Midge a star and calls her an ungrateful cunt.

During the Testi-Roastial: Stewart introduces Susie, but she's back in the kitchen smoking a joint with the cooks. Heather comes to get her. Susie takes the podium, insulting the crowd.

She roasts the roasters, gives the crowd the finger, and gets ready to leave, when Stewart stops her, saying they have one more surprise -- a video tribute.

It's Midge. She warms up the crowd with some jokes, then apologizes for not being there in person. She states that Susie made her what she is today, and Midge never really thanked her.

Midge recounts memories of their early years, and Susie gets teary. Midge suggests they meet next time she is back in town. She signs off with "tits up." The crowd applauds.

Susie gets Midge's number from Heather.

Susie leaves, deciding to walk home.
