A college student, Blake, attends a party wearing a red cowboy hat and drinks heavily. He follows a blonde woman outside and grabs her arm, but when she turns around, it’s not the woman he was looking for. Another man comes over and punches him in the face, knocking him into a pool.

Two days later, Colter goes to the Wyoming college Blake was a student at, as Velma and Teddi tell him that Blake’s mother, Polly, is a custodian on campus and she’s worried as Blake left his phone behind and hasn’t been in contact in two days.

Colter talks to Polly, and she tells him that Blake is involved in a big grant with other students and Professor Hewitt. He’s under a lot of pressure, and she believes something is wrong.

She also tells Colter that her brother had a psychotic break when he was the same age as Blake and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Colter visits his sister, Dory, a professor, on campus after her class. They haven’t spoken in a year, and he shows her the file on their father he has, which includes information about him working for the military that their mother never disclosed.

Dory tells him she wants to move on with her life and that he should talk to Russell. The two then decide to have dinner together that evening.

Colter goes to Blake’s lab and meets fellow students Dax and Jada and Professor Hewitt. Hewitt tells him that he revoked Blake’s lab privileges two days ago after discovering he was falsifying research.

Colter has Jada walk him to another building, and she tells him she saw Blake two evenings earlier, where he appeared drunk and was wearing a red cowboy hat. He seemed to be displaying behavior out of the ordinary.

Colter heads to the spot Jada saw Blake at, and Bobby phones to say he didn’t find much on Blake’s phone. He pivots to his social media, where he finds messages and needs time to crack the encryption.

Colter finds a red cowboy hat in the bushes outside a house and then breaks inside. He finds a bedroom with red sheets and handcuffs, whips, and chains inside. There’s also a camcorder and an iPad with explicit pictures of Blake on it.

Bobby tells Colter that Blake was talking with a blonde woman and that he confronted her about not showing up to the party, and she told him to meet her at the house Colter was at. He finds pictures of the woman named Irene and sends them to Colter.

Colter heads to the business the camcorder came from and finds Irene. She explains that her husband, Chuck, gets them business off the dark web. They were hired to blackmail Blake, and they got nude photos of him to use as blackmail.

Irene says Blake knew some secret, and the client wanted to scare him.

After Colter finds a spot of blood on the floor in the store, he makes Irene show him the store footage, which reveals an argument between Chuck and Blake and Chuck slamming Blake’s head down on a desk. He then took off with Blake and hasn’t been seen since.

Bobby gets into the dark web and poses as Irene, saying that he needs to meet with the client.

Colter and Irene wait at his airstream for the next steps, and Dory stops by as Colter missed their dinner.

After promising to make it up to Dory, Bobby calls with the meeting location. Irene sits in the front of the truck while Colter hides in the back with his gun. When the person approaches, Colter tries to hold him at gunpoint, but he runs off.

After chasing the person through the woods, they attempt to flee in a truck, but Colter shoots out one of their tires, causing the truck to crash. He then pulls the person out, revealing it to be Dax.

Dax explains that he was the one who gave Hewitt the dark web contact and that Blake knew Hewitt’s data he was giving to investors was off, which would potentially cost him investor money. Hewitt wanted to shut Blake up.

After getting Dax to lie to Hewitt to buy him some time, he contacts Dory and asks her where Hewitt could be hiding Blake. She mentions an underground bunker on campus that no one frequents, and the two meet there.

As they travel down, Chuck tells Hewitt they have to kill Blake to cover their tracks. Hewitt gets the gun from Chuck, saying he’ll be the one to kill him, and then shoots Chuck instead.

Colter gets into the room, hearing the gunshot, and finds Chuck dead. Hewitt begins shooting at him, and after a brief negotiation, Colter is able to shoot Hewitt in the shoulder, rescuing Blake.

Later, Polly and Blake visit Colter at the airstream to pay him.

Colter meets Dory for dinner. She wonders why Colter doesn’t come to visit her more, feeling as though he resents her for leaving after their father’s death.

She continues to advise him to talk to Russell, as she wants her brothers back together.
