Recap

Young John Dutton! They're getting ready to ride. John gives them their directions, and the guy Beth banged asks if she wants one for the road. She walks over to Rip and tells him to be careful.

Beth is still lamenting her youthful transgressions. She wakes up crying, thinking of yesterdays. Rip doesn't think of them for the same reason.

The fire is blazing in the background. It's gonna be a dry year. They've got to do some branding before helping everyone else. Rip has a hard time saying no now that John's governor.

Rip shares his plan and how they'll house the dayworkers they need to get it done. Everybody sleeps outside, and John means everybody. It's time to remind everyone what they do.

Beth wants a word with John. He wonders if it's about Summer, and he says again that he needs a minute.

John tells Clara they'll be working from the ranch for a few days. No more meetings. He wants them all canceled and not to schedule any more. He wants to bring the world to the ranch to show them what they do. Clara says he could get through two weeks worth of meetings in one afternoon. Load me up, he says.

John explains to Beth what's going on with Summer. The commuted sentence and house arrest. He also explains how Summer can help. Beth vehemently disgrees. Beth says the environmentalists are no different than the Dan Jenkins and Market Equities of the world. They all want the land and John's cattle off of it.

Summer heads down to the corrals to see what's going on. Carter asks if she needs help and explains how the forest burns. He says God puts out the fire. He brings rain, and the rain puts out the fire. Summer says nature does it. Carter says, that's what I said.

Kayce is on the porch crying. Monica finds him that way and offers comfort. She said she never bothered to ask how he was feeling. Now she knows. He worries about her, life, his place in it. He's lost and has no idea what to do next.

She tells him not to quit his job. It's not Kayce's fault nor the buffalo's. He's dead because God needs him, and it will be the first thing she asks when she meets him.

She says John invited them to the branding, and the family needs a break, so they decide to go.

Beth finds Rip looking for an outfit for Carter. She wonders if he can outfit her, too. She wants to go. He's surprised that she wants to go.

John asks Summer if she wants to go, and she blah blah blahs about beating animals into submission and gathering more to mutilate, and John has a story of her and everyone else's birth. She misses the point. He says that's why he's the governor and she's under house arrest.

Clara tells John he should take a satellite phone. She can ride, so she'll be in charge of that.

Kayce and Monica arrive. John tells Clara he's her only son.

Sarah is with the one who isn't his son. He says he can't be with her because it will cause him to recuse himself. He says the state hires outside counsel for that. And then she opens her dress.

Carter is excited that he gets to go on the gathering. Beth asks Carter not to cuss at the table, and Rip says yes, he's fuckin' going to the gathering.

John wants his whole family eating together at the dining room table. She'll either say something nice or nothing at all.

Beth decides to get a giant vodka first. And then another.

Gator has provided a dinner of game, and Summer can't shut her pie hole. When she says that ducks mate for life, he wonders if it's better that he killed them both. Then Summer learns there are dove, the birds of peace, also at the table. Monica begins laughing out loud. She says it's so damn uncomfortable. Then Beth takes Summer on a walk, and Monica continues giggling.

Beth backhands Summer. Once she gets her footing, Summer puts Beth in a headlock. It's a pretty decent match.

Rip asks if they know how stupid they both look. Do you think you're gonna beat the other one into respecting your opinion? Rip wonders if these are the manners that Beth wants to teach Carter. Rip says if Summer doesn't want to eat the food, then shut the fuck up and don't eat it. And think of all the starving people and just say thank you.

Rip puts some sense into the fight. Stand her and trade 'em until someone has had enough. Summer is down on the ground but gets back up. Summer finally cries. She's had enough. Surprisingly, Beth offers her a hand. Beth wants respect. Beth promises she'll get what she gives. Then they find common ground and go inside to the table.

Summer's parents were vegetarian. They trade barbs about what they're designed to eat. Beth drags John into it, and he just shakes his head.

He wants to get the first aid kit. Summer says it's not as bad as it looks. Good thing because she'd be on a flight to a hospital. He exuses the table, and Beth and Summer stay behind. Beth spits out a tooth.

John and Rip share a drink.

The cowboys are getting ready. Last shower for a few days.

Breakfast in the house is quiet. Everyone leaves, and Summer stays behind. She almost seems sad about it.

The smile on Rip's face seeing Beth saddle up is too much.

Summer and Beth talk before Beth rides out.

Monica tells Kayce to take care of their boy. He's the only one they've got.

John says the same thing he said years ago. Same route, same speech.

Monica cries, and Summer looks over excitedly, only to see her crying.

Rip: Us is all I think about.
Beth: When we were kids. You ever think about that?
Rip: I think about now. I think about tomorrow, but I don't give much thought to yesterday.
Beth: Yesterday's what eats me.
Rip: Baby, yesterday's what eats everybody. That's why I don't think about it.

Rip: I didn't mean to wake you, honey. I was tryin' to be quiet. Sorry.
Beth: You didn't wake me. Memories woke me.
Rip: Well, I hope they were good ones.
Beth: Good ones don't wake people. I think they do the opposite.
