Earlier this month, Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev said her character would soon grow close to Damon.

Based on previews and spoilers for tonight's "Bloodlines," it looks like that relationship starts to take a surprising turn when Elena accompanies Damon on a trip to Georgia.

In a TV Addict interview, producer Julie Plec says the two are "together the entire episode, which is kind of awesome." It may also be kind of difficult for Stefan, and even viewers, accept.

Is Elena making a dangerous decision by cozying up to the more distrustful Salvatore sibling? Plec says:

"When Elena and Damon return from their road trip there’s going to be that question: Now that Damon and Elena have bonded does she trust him in a way that she shouldn’t and that’s not safe for anybody? Also, where does Elena fit into Damon’s nefarious plan and is she going to help him out? Just who’s on whose side?"

Questions such as that are a major reason why we tune in to The Vampire Diaries.
