Castle Round Table: Mars is Murder

at .

Castle couldn’t have been more excited about murder on Mars.

Well, not Mars exactly ... but as close as he’ll probably get to it. The only one perfectly content to stay on planet earth was Ryan - and most our Round Table team seems to agree with him.

Below, TV Fanatics Jim Garner, Stacy Glanzman, Robin Harry and Christine Orlando are joined by Tycho from The 12th a Castle Fan Forum to debate Martha moving out, who wants to go to Mars and whether it’s time for the Castles to start a family after Castle Season 7 Episode 16...

Should Martha move out of the loft?

Jim: Yes and no. While Martha made some very valid points about it being crowded, they could just have her find a loft in Rick's building so that she is still close by and can be over when the story needs it.

Stacy: It does make sense for Martha to move out and give Rick and Kate more space, but I like her in the loft. Jim's idea of her staying close could work though.

Robin: Yes, she should.  The loft has gotten a bit crowded, and they all need to be able to live and enjoy their lives without getting in each other's way.  It's a good move for Martha as well as for the married couple.

Tycho:  I don't think she will be moving anytime soon. She did say she was going to start looking for a place. I think Kate enjoys having her around. She is not her Mom but at least an older woman that she could talk too.

Christine:  I’m hoping Jim’s idea happens. I love Susan Sullivan and some of my favorite scenes of the series have been between her and Nathan Fillion. I’d like to see more of Martha, not less. Moving out makes sense but I still want Martha around because I love her interactions with both Rick and Kate. Fingers crossed that she stays close and visits often.

Would you take a trip to Mars if you could?

Jim:  Uh.. no. While I commend those who feel the call of space and want to be one of the first to set foot on Mars, I'm with Ryan, I really like my air without need for a can.

Stacy: I've never had any interest in going to space. I'm perfectly happy right here on Earth thank you.

Robin: Not unless someone guaranteed me that I would get to hang out with the Martian Manhunter and we'd become pals and I'd learn shapeshifting & telepathy. Otherwise, I'm more than happy to stay on this beautiful planet.

Tycho: When I was in my 20's absolutely! I wanted to be an astronaut and was ready to major in Aeronautical Engineering. I even built all of the spaceship models, Mercury, Gemini, and all 5 stages of the Apollo moon ship. Today, probably not.

Christine: Stark, desolate planet where I can’t breathe the air? I’ll pass.

What’s your favorite Sci-fi movie?

Jim: Akira, Alien, Aliens, Avatar, Battlestar Galactica, Blade Runner, Close Encounters, Jupiter Ascending, Logan's Run, Matrix, Serenity, Star Trek, Star Wars, Terminator 2, Tron -- wait, was I suppose to list them alphabetically or pick just one?

Stacy: Serenity probably. I also love Resident Evil and the computer in the episode kind of reminded me of that movie.

Robin: I'm with Jim on this one - just one?! How about top 5?  District 9, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Matrix (just the 1st one, not the franchise), Serenity, and The X-Files: Fight The Future.

Tycho: 2001, a Space Odyssey was magical. I also loved "The Right Stuff" based on Tom Wolfe's 1979 book by the same name but that was a true story not a sci-fi. Also all of the Star Wars and Star Trek movies.

Christine: If I’m only picking one, The Empire Strikes Back but it sounds like this team could have a sci-fi marathon and be perfectly happy.

Do you want to see Castle and Beckett have a baby and if so, when?

Jim: Maybe? Seems odd for Castle who has an adult daughter to look at having another child, Him and Kate have to be in their late 30s early 40s (assuming their age is different than the actors). But, I guess if it's done right, it might work.

Stacy: Not really, I think it would affect the show too much. If it happens at the end of the last season I'd be okay with it.  Beckett was 31 when she was shot, so she's probably 34 now. They should probably get on with it in the next couple of years if it's going to happen.

Robin: I'm ambivalent. I'd be interested to see how a crime procedural like Castle handles the changes that a baby would bring to the dynamics of the show. I'd also be okay if they did a Parks and Recreation time jump to the kid being a toddler. All that said, I'm also fine without all that.

Tycho: Yes, but I can wait until the end of season 10. We can see the kiddo's growing up in the 2 hour made for TV movies that will follow. I can dream right?

Christine: In theory I love the idea but I’m not sure how it would fit in with the show. In Castle Season 1 Episode 2, "Nanny McDead" Rick mentions being a stay-at-home dad because he didn’t want Alexis raised by nannies and baby sitters the way he felt he was. If that holds, then how will he work with Kate at the precinct?

Was there anything about “The Wrong Stuff” that disappointed you?

Jim: YES! Not one Firefly/Serenity reference. We got 2001 (a lot) and some Right Stuff, but I was stunned that we didn't get even a nod to Nathan's former space faring adventures.

Stacy: Nothing specific, I just thought it was an okay episode as a whole.

Robin: It always irritates me when the Castle family does stuff without considering how Rick might feel about it. Alexis letting her friend play with Castle's laser tag gear wasn't as bad, but Martha letting her boyfriend wear Rick's pajamas? That's just wrong.

Tycho: Nope, for a TV show they did an amazing job with the sets and costumes on a shoe string budget. All of the nods to many space shows was great!

Christine: Only that I wish Alexis was the one moving out instead of Martha. Other than that I thought the episode was a lot of fun and just what we needed after that drama filled two-parter.

What was your favorite scene from Castle Season 7 Episode 16?

Jim: I'm always a sucker for Rick when he is in "5 year old excited" mode. Watching him do the fake slow walk in the space suit while Kate just walked up to him with the "are you done" question (and look) had me in stitches.

Stacy: I liked Beckett realizing they weren't actually on Mars and pulling out her cell phone to call Esposito for help.

Robin: I really enjoyed the scene where they were talking to the computer, trying to figure out what motivated MIRA to kill Tom. That was the most interesting part of the case. That was a lot of fun, and I loved how science-fiction it was.

Tycho: Beckett interrogating M.I.R.A. ,aka Hal 9000 from 2001 A Space Odyssey. I loved the way Beckett and Castle worked together to break M.I.R.A. I suspected M.I.R.A. but it was a nice twist to learn the 3 crew members conspired to eliminate one of their crew. NASA does a better job of vetting their astronauts.

Christine: Martha explaining why she was moving out. It was very sweet and the expressions on both Kate and Rick’s faces spoke volumes about how much they care about Martha in return.

Unfortunately it will be three weeks until we get to see Castle Season 7 Episode 17 but you can always watch Castle online right here at TV Fanatic.

Kate Beckett: Four adults together in one space, we're bound to step on each other's toes.
Rick Castle: Yeah, well there were a lot more toes than usual tonight.

Castle we have a murder. To solve not to commit.
