Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 9 Review: Player's Choice

You can always tell when a show is gearing up for their season finale – they set up cliffhangers and the previews make you wish next week would get here already.

It's not as if Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 9 didn't set up the groundwork for stories to take an exciting turn next week. We got couples possibly breaking up for good and futures being made.

Let's not waste anymore time and discuss tonight's episode.

Stepping Away - Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 9

John's frustration over the assistants leaving is definitely warranted. It always amazes me how quick people are to show their allegiance to a person even though we all know what that person did was inexcusable. You'd think the assistants would be smart and see what Coach Walsh did was wrong and they should have let John prove himself before jumping ship; though I'm not sure it was the best idea to have Bay John's assistant.

You couldn't help but feel badly for Bay after she had such an awkward conversation with Emmett. It's clear they both care about each other, and while the conversation was short, they needed to talk to each other. This whole "not talking" isn't going to help their relationship and it definitely won't help them heal. Plus, Bay needs to get Skye's claws off Emmett.

Damn you Mingo and your hotness. I try to stay mad at him, but the look he gave Daphne just made me melt. He may be a man whore, but he is so nice to look at; though does anyone else find it odd how much he forgets? I'm not sure if he's being serious about his forgetfulness or he genuinely has issues with his memory. There has to be more to Mingo and I hope we get to hear something about his past before the end of the finale.

When I think of sororities, I immediately think of Iris. She has the perfect bubbly personality for one and she has this energy which is so contagious, but I could never see Daphne in a sorority. Daphne has too much on her plate and trying to get into a sorority should be the last thing on her list. I am enjoying the growing friendship between her and Iris – I love how they encourage them.

Did anyone else cringe during Daphne's interview? You couldn't help but feel embarrassed for her when she was trying to talk herself up. It was actually surprising the whole switched at birth angle didn't register even a little bit with the person who was interviewing her. I'm actually surprised Daphne was so upset about not getting into the sorority seeing as she bombed the interview so badly.

Royce is now my favorite character of all time for telling Daphne off. Daphne had no right to approach Royce and assume the reason she didn't get into the sorority is because they both slept with Mingo. Just when you think Daphne is starting to grow as a person she has to turn around and do something so stupid.

I'm sorry you didn't get in and I'm even more sorry that I hooked up with a guy you're clearly obsessed with, but if you're looking for a catty and superficial girl I think you should try looking in the mirror.

Mary Beth really should have focused on the support Travis was trying to give her instead of being jealous and insecure. We all understand where Mary Beth is coming from in regard to not wanting to be a different person around Travis because of who he is now, but she could have at least supported him a little bit. The breakup between them was so heartbreaking to watch.

Mary Beth: I can't do this anymore.
Travis: What do you mean?
Mary Beth: I've worked really hard to be the kind of person who's not needy and insecure, but this relationship is turning me into someone I don't want to be.
Travis: Okay. I'll stop having out with those guys so much.
Mary Beth: You're a Freshman in college. You should be able to hang out with whoever you want. Date whoever you want.
Travis: But I want to date you.
Mary Beth: You're the first person I ever fell in love with. The first person I ever though about a future with. I lost my virginity to you. I learned a new language for you. I will always love you, but this relationship isn't right for me anymore.

We all knew Kathryn would assume there was something going on between Lily and the new professor, Julian, and I'm happy Kathryn actually said something to Lily later without being completely judgmental. Kathryn is a mother first and she wants to protect her kids, so I saw nothing wrong with her conversation with Lily. It wasn't a huge surprise when Lily told Toby about her feelings for someone else – poor guy just can't catch a break.

Emmett is a genius for using the love story between him and Bay as his film idea. It's something which hasn't really been done before and it makes him stand out. It was refreshing to see Emmett do something he loves and really be enthusiastic about his work.

They wrapped up the hour nicely with Toby trying to avoid talking about Lily by focusing all his effort on the musical and Daphne realizing she doesn't need a sorority to feel included. You had to appreciate the fact she blew off Mingo to hang out with her friends. We also found out Bay is on her way to Los Angeles to fight for Emmett.

Next Tuesday on the Switched at Birth Season 4 Episode 10 finale, secrets come out and relationships are tested. Bay tries to fight to keep her relationship with Emmett. Regina and Eric's relationship moves at lightening speed and Daphne has a meltdown over her final grade. It looks like the finale is going to have people talking for days.
