This Is Us is here to stay!
NBC has ordered a full season of 18 episodes of the new, highly acclaimed family drama from Dan Fogelman, which airs it's second episode tonight.
While 18 episodes is less than the traditional order of 22, Fogelman had originally planned the story on shorter seasons, so this isn't due to a lack of confidence, but in writer preference.
“We are thrilled. This order for a complete first season of 18 episodes is exactly what we’d wanted and hoped for,” Fogelman said.
“We’d carefully mapped out an 18-chapter story for the first year of the show, and this allows us to follow through with our exact initial intent."
"And to get the order so early on is a tremendous show of confidence and a boost for our entire cast and crew.”
“It’s a rare moment in this business when a show so instantly delivers both critical acclaim and hit ratings, but This Is Us is just such an extraordinary achievement,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke.
“Creator Dan Fogelman, along with co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and the gifted producers, cast and crew, has delivered the kind of heart and depth that resonates with every segment of the audience, and we’re proud to extend its presence on our schedule.”
If you recall, and are probably sick of hearing by now, This Is Us started making waves when its trailer was first released and quickly had an unprecedented amount of viewings, most of which were on Facebook.
Eventually garnering over 100 million views, we wondered if the success of the trailer would have any indication as to the success of the premiere.
The premiere was good, delivering both emotional and genuinely funny moments from a drama that didn't stand on some sort of destructive moment.
It was well received not only by critics, but by the audience, becoming one of the most watched premieres, and picking up more viewers with DVR numbers afterward.
The timing of the premiere of This Is Us also worked out very well as one of the series stars, Sterling K. Brown, won an Emmy Award just two days prior for his work on The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.
If you haven't watched the premiere yet, you have some time. It's a wonderful drama full of heart. Make sure you watch This Is Us online and come back for the review of This Is Us Season 1 Episode 2 after it airs to join the conversation.
