1. Goodbye Alfred

The two-part Season 3 finale was everything a Gotham fan could imagine, but we certainly didn't expect Bruce to kill Alfred. It was one of the most jaw-dropping events of the entire series. Even though Alfred encouraged him to do it in hopes of breaking Bruce's brainwashing, it was a complete surprise. Luckily for Bruce – and us – it happened near the Lazarus Pit, so Bruce was able to bring Alfred back life. What this means for the future is anyone's guess, but we're glad Alfred is back in the land of the living.

2. The Riddler Emerges

After almost two seasons of teases, Nygma became The Riddler, embracing his persona after shooting Penguin and leaving him to die. But it wasn't until he held Lucius hostage that he finally came up with his villainous name. For a short time, he was able to wreak his own brand of precise havoc on Gotham, but not he's frozen in ice thanks to a revived Penguin and Mr. Freeze.

3. Batman Lite

At the end of Season 3, Bruce took the biggest step yet to becoming the Dark Knight when he saved a family being mugged in an alley. Who didn't get chills as he retreated to the top of the building in full prototype Batman regalia?

4. Bad Girl Lee

Lee decided to give up her goody-goody image when she infected herself with the Alice Tetch virus. It was fun watching Morena Baccarin transform into the sassy bad girl intent on spending the rest of her life with Jim. Infecting herself was the only way she saw the relationship working, but in the end, Jim did the right thing and gave her the antidote. Lee left town, but her effect on Jim will last forever.

5. The Love Triangle

We were convinced Penguin and Nygma were going to be a couple worth championing, but then Isabella entered the picture and dashed our hopes for a Nygma/Penguin romance. Penguin wasn't going to let anyone get in his way and killed Isabella. Unfortunately, Nygma found out, and he didn't handle it well, setting out to destroy Penguin. He almost succeeded.

6. Ivy Grows Up

Ivy got herself into a bit of trouble when she was nosing around where she wasn't supposed to be. Fish set Marv after her, but Ivy got away. Unfortunately Marv briefly touched her before she jumped into the water pipes. It was enough to make Ivy grow into a young adult. She still has her childish mind, but she gained many other skills including a special talent with plants. Now she and Penguin have partnered up, and we can only imagine what fun is on the horizon.

7. Barnes Loses Control

Barnes was one of our favorites as he didn't quite fit into the culture of Gotham and the GCPD. Still, he always tried to do the right thing even if the right thing wasn't for the best. When he became infected with Alice Tetch's virus it took his holier-than-though attitude to a new level causing him to be the judge, jury, and executioner, something, deep down, he always believed he was. It was a surprising twist watching the one-time good guy turn bad, but it was a welcome relief for a character that was turning stale.

8. Nygma Shoots Penguin

While many of us were clamoring for a Penguin/Nygma hookup, Nygma had other ideas after he learned Penguin killed Isabella. Nygma was angry, and we didn't think he'd shoot his best friend and throw him in the bay, but that's exactly what he did. Thanks to Ivy, Penguin recovered and exacted his revenge on his old friend when he froze him in ice with the help of Mr. Freeze.

9. Jerome Returns

Jerome made a lasting impression on Gotham Season 2 and built up quite a following. After he was revived on Season 3, he wreaked havoc on Gotham once again, as he took Bruce and the city hostage. Bruce fought for his life and won, but what happened to Jerome? Is he set to make another return?

10. A Honeymoon Destroyed

Was it any surprise that Jim would somehow destroy Lee's life again? Jim had every right to go after Mario since he was infected with the virus, but will we ever really know if Mario was really going to kill Lee?

11. Fish Dies...For Good

Fish Mooney graced our screen since the beginning of Gotham. Although her character had mixed reviews from fans, we always found her a lot of fun. She died by Penguin's hands, but came back to life thanks to Professor Strange's experiments. Just when we though all would be back to normal in Gotham's underworld with her and Penguin at the helm, Jim ruined that dream when he accidentally killed her in the warehouse. There's no coming back for Fish this time, and we bid her a fond farewell.

12. Jim vs. Zsasz

The battle between Zsasz and Jim was one of our favorites of the season. Carmine was angry about Mario's death, as any father would be, and sent Zsasz to take care of his son's killer. Who knew Jim had as many moves as he did? He was able to survive Zsasz's attack but only because Carmine called off the hit thanks to Lee.

13. Fake Bruce Pushes Selina Out of a Window

Fake Bruce was only protecting Selina, but he got angry when she threatened to go to Alfred with the truth and pushed her out the window. It looked like she was a goner, but the cats saved her by working whatever kind of Tim Burton magic they worked on her. She ended up in the hospital, but Ivy and her special herbs helped her even more. Now, Selina is back and better than ever. But how much has she changed?

14. Barbara Shoots Butch

Barbara and Butch never really got along. She was always in the way as he tried to woo Tabitha back into his arms. Even before then, they never liked each other. It was no surprise he wanted her gone, but who guessed that she would pull the trigger first? Barbara thought she shot Butch dead, but the real surprise was that he survived. And the other shocker? Butch's real name is Solomon Grundy!

15. Tabitha Kills Barbara...Maybe

The tensions between Tabitha and Barbara grew all season as Barbara's quest for domination of Gotham's underworld consumed her. She didn't realize how much she was annoying her good friend, and things came to a head thanks to Butch who was itching to off Barbara for quite some time. Barbara got a whiff of their plans and confronted Butch, killing him in the process. When Tabitha found out, the two former friends became instant enemies and had one of the greatest catfights of all time. In the end, Tabitha won by electrocuting Barabra with a snap of her whip. Is Barbara really gone, or will she transform into someone even more deadly?

16. Mayor Penguin

The former King of Gotham gave up his criminal ways to rule the city on the up-and-up when he ran for mayor and won! However, it was a short-lived as Nygma messed with his mind, and Penguin ultimately returned to his evil ways, much to the relief of fans everywhere!

17. Penguin Lets Fish Go

When Penguin learned that Fish was alive at the end of Gotham Season 2, it was no surprise he wanted her dead. What was surprising was Jim handing her to Penguin on a silver platter. But Penguin didn't have the heart to kill her when Fish shared her motherly feelings with him. While it was a heartwarming moment, it was also shocking. All the rage Penguin built up quickly disappeared just like Fish and Professor Strange did – for a while, at least.

18. Bruce Makes a Vow

Bruce took one step closer to his destiny after his run-in with Jerome. Although he wanted to kill him with every fiber of his being, he was able to control his rage. He told Alfred the story and made a vow. It was his first rule: Never kill.

19. Jim Has to Choose

We thought Valerie and Jim made a great couple, and it probably would have worked had Jervis Tetch not gotten in the way. When Tetch forced Jim to choose between Valerie and Lee, it wasn't hard to figure out who Jim would choose. His love for Lee was overpowering, and he'd do anything to protect her including allowing Tetch to kill another woman. Valerie ended up surviving, but her relationship with Jim didn't.

20. Bruce Meets Bruce

Bruce and Alfred were quite surprised when Bruce's clone showed up at Wayne Manor. Despite Alfred's protests, Bruce opened his home to 514A who ended up taking advantage of Bruce's kindness. Fake Bruce was using Bruce all along for a bigger plan of which even he was unaware!

21. Jim Takes a Trip

Jervis Tetch was one crazy dude, and he wanted Jim off his back, so he blew a little Red Queen in Jim's face causing the GCPD detective to take a trip of a lifetime. Barbara was his guide as he visited the past and what could have been. But the biggest surprise of all was discovering that his father held the key to the biggest secret of all – The Court of Owls.
