Suits Season 7 Episode 1 Review: Skin In the Game

Suits is officially back, and the premiere set up the season ahead in an exciting way.

Suits Season 7 Episode 1 picked up with Harvey meeting with his former therapist and using his charming personality to get her to agree to a date with him.

This Is Empty - Suits Season 7 Episode 1

It was certainly different to what I would have expected. I genuinely thought the therapist plot was over and done with, but clearly, Harvey had the date for which he could get jiggy with her in his diary.

If you watch Suits online, you will know that Harvey has not been lucky in love, and as much as the odds were stacked against him, he still managed to wind up in her arms by the end of the episode.

Therapist: Harvey... what you doing here?
Harvey: Nothing, I was just driving this baby around and remembered how much street parking I had.
Therapist: Is that supposed to impress me?
Harvey: Well, I hope so. It sure as hell impresses me.

Now, I'm not saying Harvey was right by using her to help him through some significant changes at the firm, but it at least showed us at home that there was someone he could turn to.

It turns out, Donna is not the only person who can help him through rough patches, and I'm all for that. The Harvey-Donna friendship has long been a strong point on Suits, but I'm over the back and forth.

Friends Again - Suits Season 7 Episode 1

Giving Harvey a new girlfriend worked wonders for his character development. With all of the crap going on at the firm, it would not make sense to have Harvey and Donna together.

That's likely a storyline being saved for the show's final ever installment. I won't be mad if they never get it together, but I'll be disappointed.

Harvey: Is that for me?
Donna: No, actually, it's for me. You're later than usual this morning. I've been waiting for you.
Harvey: Donna, about the other night, but before you say anything...
Donna: I want to be a partner.
Harvey: Partner?
Donna: Yes, I figured out what I want and I want to be a partner at this firm.
Harvey: Donna, I don't mean to insult you, but you're not even a lawyer.
Donna: Good, because my being a partner is not about the law. It's about keeping this firm running, which I've been doing for as long as I can remember.

Let's talk about Donna and her quest to become a partner. Sure, she is not a lawyer, but she has long been the glue that holds everyone in the firm together.

She has consistently come through for her friends, and that's what makes her such an integral character to the series. She has been undermined a lot of the time because she has not been seen as a lawyer.

Her arc on Suits Season 6 made her question her place at the firm, and I was fully prepared for her to depart and find a new challenge, but I'm happy she's sticking around.

Mesmerized by the City - Suits Season 7 Episode 1

Giving her the power to make big decisions should be intriguing as we delve deeper into the new season of the show. Before we go any further, I have to comment on her chat with Mike at the end of the hour.

It was awesome, and it felt like a scene that would be included in a series finale. It brought her storyline with Mike full circle, and I cannot wait to see how these two navigate these uncharted waters set out for them.

Harvey: Did you sleep in here?
Mike: I'm just getting a feel for my new office. You think a bike rack would fit on this wall?
Harvey: You put a bike rack in here, your first pro bono will be representing yourself after I shove it up your ass.
Mike: Well, that sounds uncomfortable.

Mike taking Harvey's office was always going to be difficult because Harvey has long been the person Mike looks up to. Aside from Donna, he was the only one who gave him a chance when he really needed it.

I found it a bit crappy that he never reached out to Oliver before making his exit from the clinic. He tried his best to make Oliver think differently of him, but it was all thrown to the side when he exited the clinic.

Oliver was right to show up at Pearson Specter Litt to let his former friend know what he thought about him. I was actually surprised Oliver never made the move with Mike to the firm, but it might be one of those plots that will come to fruition down the line.

Is Oliver Back? - Suits

I was not impressed with Louis this evening. It's understandable that his big break-up with Tara would weigh heavily on his mind, but he was a d-bag to the associates.

You would think that he would be trying his best to keep the associates on his good side when you consider how empty the offices were last season.

He was hurting, but his actions were deplorable, and I just want him to take a break, speak to Tara and return when he's physically and mentally ready to lead a group of people again.

What's Next? - Suits Season 7 Episode 1

Rachel offering herself up for the role was a good move. She knew there was a chance that lawsuits would make their way into the office and that was a risk she was not willing to take.

"Skin In the Game" was a spectacular season opener. Moving on from Mike's secret has been the best thing the show could ever do, and I can't wait to see where we go from here.

Other tidbits from the episode:

  • Was it just me or did Gretchen pop up with awesome one-liners every time we needed some comic relief?
  • I was not a huge fan of the case with Neil trying to push through the sale. Don't even get me started on Harvey's solution for all of it.
  • Mike giving Harvey some of the same advice he gave him not so long ago was needed, but it threw me back all the way to Suits Season 1

Over to you, Suits Fanatics. What did you think of the episode?

Therapist: Harvey... what you doing here?

Harvey: Well, I hope so. It sure as hell impresses me.

Nathan: Good. You're here early. I need you to take point in a consumer fraud hearing.
Mike: Nathan, I need to talk to you.
Nathan: Look, I know things got heated between us the other night, but as far as I'm concerned, it's water under the bridge. So, if you're wondering if I'm still upset at you, I'm not.
