The conclusion of Freeform's hit series, Shadowhunters just bigger.
Freeform has announced the Shadowhunters series finale will now span 2.5 hours, and that the show will sign off for good in May.
The last-ever installment will now air Monday, May 6 at 8/7c, the network revealed Wednesday at the Second Annual Freeform Summit.
While it's clear based on the quality of the current season that the show is ending way too soon, fans can rest assured that they will not be left in the lurch with an ending that does not bring closure to the storylines.
The ratings for Shadowhunters are not great, but they are on par with most of the other shows on the network, and that's why many fans were blindsided by Freeform's decision to conclude the series.
The show is said to be more expensive than some of the others on the cabler, in large part due to the special effects that are used.
A company called Constantin Film produced the series, and they lost their output deal with Netflix, who helped fund the series. Constantin wanted Freeform to pay some more money to make up the difference in order to make the economics work.
Freeform maintained at the time of the cancellation that it could not keep the series around with the high price tag, but did order a special two-part finale which will now make up the 2.5-hour finale.
For their part, the fandom has been relentlessly trying to find a new destination for the series, all the while raising money for charities. Freeform also revealed during the summit that it has matched the $25k the Shadowhunters fandom helped raise for The Trevor Project.
The relationship between the Shadowhunters fandom and Freeform has soured of late, and it's partly down to the way Freeform has handled the series.
After delaying the launch of Shadowhunters Season 3B, the network poked fun at fans who were trying to save the series during an "enhanced" edition of Toy Story.
Things went one step further when promos aired on Freeform last week that urged fans to tune into watch the series that Wednesday at 8/7c for more from the series.
However, that was the timeslot PLL: The Perfectionists premiered in, causing more uproar from the fans.
