The Handmaid's Tale Sequel in the Works at Hulu

Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale sequel is in the works at Hulu.

MGM and Hulu revealed on Wednesday that they will develop The Testaments, a sequel to the original 1985 novel, according to Deadline

What's more, Bruce Miller (current showrunner of the Hulu hit) is currently in negotiations about how The Testaments can become an extension to the current series starring Elisabeth Moss.

We must stress that The Testaments novel has yet to be released, but it is coming next week. It picks up over 15 years after the conclusion of the first novel.

Here's the official logline for the book:

“When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her — freedom, prison or death.

With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story more than 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.”

As you will probably already know, the current TV series has already moved beyond the original 1985 novel, so it's unclear how The Testaments will fit into the current series.

It's possible that we could follow a character from The Handmaid's Tale several years after the current timeline.

It's also possible that The Handmaid's Tale could reach a conclusion before setting up a sequel series several years in the future.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 3 suffered from more criticism than before, and much of it was lodged at how June's storyline is progressing.

The creative forces are struggling to keep the character at the wheel of the story, and that could only prove more problematic if the show is to continue for more than one more season.

For now, we know that The Handmaid's Tale will continue for a fourth season, but there's no telling what might happen beyond that.

The show is an Emmy-Award winning drama, so it's not something Hulu will want to part with.

The Handmaid's Tale Quotes

A priest, a doctor, a gay man. I think I heard that joke once. This wasn't the punchline.

Offred

A window with white curtains. The glass is shatterproof, but it isn't running away that they're afraid of. A Handmaid wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes, the ones you can open in yourself given a cutting edge or a twisted shape and a chandelier. It's harder on Ceremony Day, but thinking can hurt your chances. My name is Offred. I had another name, but it's forbidden now. So many things are forbidden now.
