Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 1 Recap: Row, Row, Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea

Marcel is in a helicopter with a patient who is no longer moving his limbs.

Meanwhile, there is a multi-car crash. All hands are needed at Gaffney while Marcel intubates his patient in the helicopter.

Maggie has to send some people back to wait because green tags mean non-emergency, and they have all these crash victims to deal with.

The woman who caused the crash is overcome with guilt, and Dr. Charles tells her it's not her fault.

More patients are incoming, including one Archer and a new doctor work on, and the new guy (name not yet known) impresses Archer.

One victim brings in a hamster that Zac shrugs his shoulders at.

Marcel works on a kid. He's internally decapitated.

Another woman comes in with a child.

Asher tells Archer to take it easy since he's getting his kidney transplant tomorrow.

Marcel has to talk to the boy's mother. Her husband was killed in the crash. He tells her he will do his best, but he has to be honest with her about the severity of the injuries. He asks Maggie to page Abrams. The mother is allowed to visit her son.

Another patient comes in.

Ripley (the new guy) sews up a little boy's head.

Zach says Hamster Woman says that she rescues animals. She has non-serious injuries. Her name is Ivy, and she says she was rescued from a bad place.

The new guy is named Ripley, according to Archer. Charles thinks he looks very familiar.

A patient recognizes Maggie as "Mrs. Ben." They are the parents of one of Ben's students. The husband says he got dizzy and thinks he broke his arm. He has bipolar disorder and has lithium and other mood stabilizers in his system. Maggie thinks they should call Charles. But Ripley doesn't want to bother him.

Ivy is in V-Fib. Asher doesn't understand why. The defib doesn't seem to be doing anything. Finally, her heart begins beating again. Charles tells Asher her pupils are blown. Asher realizes she is brain-dead. Charles says let's intubate until we can confirm. Asher walks off, very upset. Did she miss something? Charles doubts it. She says she's an OBGYN. Charles tries to convince her this isn't her fault. She won't listen and storms off.

Abrams isn't sure he can do anything. Usually, patients with this injury die. There is an experimental surgery, but it has never been done on live patients rather than cadavers, and Abrams gives him a 5% chance of survival.

Sharon is trying to find more beds. Marcel interrupts to tell her about the experimental surgery. He wants to use 2.0. Peter doesn't like the idea; it is too risky. Marcel believes in 2.0 and thinks it is the boy's only hope. Peter is freaking out about lawsuits. Sharon thinks they have no choice. She authorizes the use of 2.0. Peter warns him that the new owners are business people who will want his head if the surgery goes South, and Sharon's too.

Asher tells Archer that Sean has been admitted for pre-op. Asher asks her if she will be okay after losing the patient.

Charles introduces himself to Ripley. Ripley says they met 20 years ago but is interrupted by Maggie giving him labs on his patient. He tells Harris they are metabolic symptoms associated with the mood stabilizers and can be fatal. He thinks Harris is overmedicated. He wants to take him off one. His wife is worried about the idea.

Charles looks through old files and finds RIpley's.

Asher wants Archer to look at a case of hers. He tells her she's fine despite her loss. She says the patient just got a new kidney. The girl insists she's okay. Dr. Archer does an exam and finds she has pain in her stomach. The doctors are concerned that her new kidney has been damaged. Archer and Asher have a whispered conversation about this in the hall.

Sharon asks Charles if anyone qualifies for early discharge in the psych unit. She can tell he's upset. He tells her he ran into a former patient who was violent at the time, but now they've turned their life around, so it's all good.

Archer goes to see Sean, whose blood work is perfect. He tells Sean he doesn't have to do this. Sean tells him he wants to do this. They argue over who should be sorry. Sean tells him a story of how the girl next door lost her cat, and he went to look for it and found it under their porch, which made her happy. That was the best day of his life til now.

Abrams doesn't like the idea of 2.0. He agrees to do the surgery anyway, even though he thinks the AI isn't trustworthy.

Dr. Cameron tells Kayla the kidney is bleeding and not working at all. Kayla will have to go back on dialysis after first embolizing her kidney, which needs to be done ASAP. Archer tells her that Cameron is his doctor, too, so he knows he's the best. The little girl is sorry that Archer has kidney disease, too. Archer is visibly touched as he leaves the room. He wonders if Sean is a match for Kayla; could he donate to Kayla instead? Nope, he's supposed to be supporting his kidney to Archer, and no, he is not a match for Kayla. Asher confronts Archer about this idea, though he says it's not her business. She tells him Sean wants connection, and it will destroy him if Archer doesn't let him do this.

Charles hears yelling. Harris is manic and irritable and screaming he has to get out of there before they kill him. Charles asks to look at the chart and then to talk to Ripley. Why did he take him off his medication? And why didn't he consult him? Ripley insists it's his patient and he's overmedicated. Charles tells him he is being reckless. Ripley says you called it impulse control disorder back then. I'm an attending physician, so don't treat him like the kid he used to be.

Peter and Sharon watch as the 2.0 assisted surgery. Abrams doesn't believe its warnings. Abrams doesn't like that Marcel takes precautionary measures. Or 2.0 is correct, and the boy is in serious trouble. Vitals are tanking. (They seem to be moving slowly during this emergency) The kid is saved. Sharon is nodding triumphantly.

Audrey tells Maggie that Harris works hard to stay well, and people see it as a failure instead of an illness. Ben always understood and was so good to their son when he was scared because his father had to be hospitalized.

Maggie tells Doris she doesn't want to hear about Ben. Also, no one wants the hamster, so Doris has called animal control.

Ripley asks Charles to talk to a patient who is refusing treatment and wants to die. She says she doesn't deserve to live. Charles asks what she would say to someone else in this situation. She insists this was her fault. She crashed first. HE encourages her to forgive herself.

Abrams examines Brice and is impressed with how well he is recovering.

Zac says Ivy is an organ donor, and Archer had her typed. She can give a kidney to Kyla.

Ripley walks away as Charles comes out.

Asher offers to walk Maggie to her car. Maggie says she's covering for someone. Asher says Ben is waiting… Maggie says Ben wants a divorce. She walks off. Asher takes the hamster cage.

Ripley is on the roof. He says Harris is back on his meds. Charles says he came up to tell him how impressed he was at how he had turned his life around. Ripley says better than you expected? Ripley says Charles put him in chemical restraints. Charles says they know more about the meds now than they did then. Ripley was probably overmedicated. Ripley says, and then you left. Charles imagines his rotation was probably over. Ripley walks off, not believing him…
