Sometimes, the most terrifying man for a job is a woman.
And trust us, when it comes to Cross’ latest serial killer, it gets terrifying and very bloody.
We still have a month to go before Cross Season 2 graces our screens for a scintillating binge, but the trailer is something that will whet your whistles when it has Cross collaborating with the FBI to hunt down a female assassin.
Kayla barks that their manhunt is now a womanhunt, and let it never be said that women can’t get things done, even if it’s something as depraved as severing fingers.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.
After the events of Cross Season 1, Alex’s life seems a bit in flux, but that can all shift back into place with the proper focus: tracking down a twisted, clever, and intriguing serial killer.
It seems it won’t be long before Cross and others realize the person they’re looking for is actually a woman.
I support women’s rights and women’s wrongs, especially when it comes to my entertainment. If being excited about this fantastically gritty series delving into female assassins is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
Sue me. Well, don’t. I have no money.
There’s something so profoundly compelling about Cross using his particular blend of observational skills and process of getting inside the minds of the depraved and having to shape that around a female killer.
For the most part, history has shown that most serial killers are men, but that’s not necessarily because there haven’t been women. It’s more likely it’s because most women haven’t been caught.
And part of that is because societal norms and baked-in sexism and gender stereotypes that too often keep the typical mind from even considering a woman as their suspect regarding full-blown serial killing.
Cross never seems to shy away from this, and one could even say that the previous villain’s obsession with Aileen Wuronos was a nice giveaway that this series isn’t above pushing some boundaries in that regard.
It’s thrilling.
After all, from the trailer, we see that SEAL Team‘s Alona Tal will be playing the FBI Agent whom Cross has to work alongside for this particular case. And her name? It’s Kayla Craig.
Yes, they genderbent a pivotal character from the books, and it’s a switch-up that could bear some far more interesting fruit.
I’m curious to hear what book faithfuls think about this move.
Cross isn’t afraid to switch things up and mix and match when it comes to adapting from the books, and that’s precisely the thing that makes it a more interesting adaptation than if they stay too faithful to everything in the exact way.
And it ultimately results in a show that’s darker, bolder, and more thrilling than it’s given credit for — seriously, Cross is the most underrated, fascinating psychological suspense thriller we have right now.
It keeps you on edge in tantalizing ways, and the trailer does an excellent job of evoking that.
A billionaire, Matthew Lillard’s Lance Durand, enlists the help of the FBI to protect him after he receives some particularly terrifying threats.
It’s what ultimately leads to Cross and his crew working with the FBI and to Cross crossing paths with Kayla Craig. Because it’s not just Lance who is in the line of fire, the killer has already struck with another famous billionaire.
A joint mission leads to an adrenaline-inducing race to find and capture the person behind all of this, or shall we say, woman. That’s where Roswell: New Mexico and Upload’s Jeanine Mason comes in for a role that is a true break from form.
Smart, sexy, focused, calculated, and terrifying, this assassin isn’t about leaving some gruesome clues (severed fingers, anyone?) or taunting when it comes to her going after what she wants.
And what she wants is to kill everyone on a list, the trailer teases.
But Cross isn’t afraid to “press some buttons” to track this badass but lethal woman.
It may put him up against his superiors. As usual, politics and the system often get in the way of justice, and that drives him insane. He’s a man of change and action, but he’s also part of a system that causes harm, among other things.
He doesn’t take any of that lightly.
But one thing is unmistakable, and Alex is firm in that. “I want justice.”
