Doc Season 2 Episode 17 Stages an Unexpectedly Heartfelt Joan Sendoff

Critic's Rating: 4.3 / 5.0
4.3

Well, does that mean it’s the end for Joan?

In many ways, Doc Season 2 Episode 17 wrapped up Joan’s arc in a way that felt much simpler than I had envisioned.

That’s not even to say that it’s a problem that it has, but after so much of the drama, bordering on melodrama, the simpler approach to some of these arcs has been a bit surprising.

(John Medland/FOX)

The hour was mostly devoted to Joan, and it was actually a nice change of pace that Doc got to expand on its other characters a bit, even if it meant centering on one of the new ones.

With that broader approach, we had a more well-rounded hour that actually utilized all the characters in some way, and we still had two compelling medical cases.

The Joan arc was the particular standout here because we’ve been waiting for her past and the truth about her MDS to come up and bite her in the butt a bit.

And it did, but it didn’t turn out nearly as disastrous as I could have envisioned. I’m grateful that she stopped performing surgeries before she killed someone, and I’m especially grateful that her final risky surgery didn’t result in her friend dying.

Javi was so sweet, and it’s clear that those two cared deeply about one another, especially during the years they spent working together overseas, saving lives.

(John Medland/FOX)

Joan has always been this maverick, and so much of her identity is wrapped up in her career, so it made sense that she’s been struggling with the prospect of losing all of that.

She wanted to go out on her own terms, but as more people latched onto her illness, it was impossible for that plan to come to fruition.

But I do wonder how long she would’ve felt compelled to keep going had the others not found out and put pressure on her.

Was I the only one confused about the timeline situation? I couldn’t quite place the exact moment when she found out and told the truth to Amy.

It was obviously well before she took on the job, so she lied to Jake about not knowing about her diagnosis until after.

But for some reason, I kept thinking it was something she had been struggling with for much longer than just a few months.

(John Medland/FOX)

Nevertheless, it was a bit of a mess, and it prompted Amy to return to her treatment just so that she could conjure up the full memory and confirm Joan had been lying about her illness.

I still think the best course of action should have been to go directly to Michael. He likely would’ve consulted with Amy anyway, and much of the results would have been the same.

But I guess this way, Joan got to end her surgical career on such a high note, with a surgery that’s for the books, wherein she removed every organ from Javi’s body just to extract all the granules he had, and put them back in.

It suits Joan that she got to go off on such a high note, but it’s still insane that, for the most part, everyone would confront her and then wring their hands as she did absolutely everything she wanted to do.

It was always Joan’s world, and the others just lived in it.

The flashbacks were solid enough in that they gave us more context for her strained relationship with Ethan, but I also didn’t feel like they were essential.

Doc - Joan's Son, Ethan
(John Medland/FOX)

The dialogue they’ve had before has sold us on more than enough to give us the full picture.

But I still love that Amy could reach Ethan and they could have a much-needed reunion, putting some of the past behind them.

Ethan was understandably frustrated, having spent his entire life coming in second to his mother’s career. And the worst part about it is that, because of the work Joan did, she could always moralize that she was saving the world and making a grand difference.

And thus, he could come across as selfish for merely wanting his own mom there with him when he needed her most.

Because no matter what problems he had, they would never be as bad as the problems of the less fortunate elsewhere, right?

It’s frustrating when you bump up against that wall with a person. And it totally invalidates your feelings. I could understand why Ethan felt as he did, and even when he took a break from his own mother.

Doc Joan
(John Medland/FOX)

Nevertheless, I’m glad he’s back, and now that Joan is sick and can no longer practice, she has the time and perspective and can work on fixing her relationship with her son.

The negative part of me can’t help but point out that this can only happen as her career ends, though.

Interestingly, some of the crucial moments that pack an emotional punch happen offscreen. I would’ve loved to actually hear how that first conversation went with Joan and Ethan, or even Amy talking to Ethan about his mother’s condition.

Hell, it would have been nice to hear how that conversation with Michael went, too. It’s like the story arc had all of these high stakes, and then they just peter out, and everything is fine in the end.

And we got this big, emotional speech that Joan gives at the end. It’s a good one, but the emotions would’ve landed better if this specific arc had played out consistently enough for us to invest more.

Joan has barely been in the position long enough for us to feel the impact she has had on the department and other doctors. The tears and strong emotions don’t land as hard because we didn’t get that kind of time to care as much.

It felt like sending off an established, beloved character whom we had for seasons, except Joan doesn’t fit the bill in that regard. And it totally skips past accountability and consequences.

Doc - Jake
(John Medland/FOX)

But I still found it enjoyable in its own way, too, so I suppose that’s worth something.

We also got an update on Rachel, which was nice. Thankfully, she doesn’t have breast cancer. And Jake was the perfect support for her during that trying time.

The man even left his job early to sit in a diner and share a sundae with her. They’re cute together as friends, and Jake is just such a giver, and sometimes I wonder at what point he just gives too much of himself.

I still can’t figure out how or even if Jake’s closeness with Rachel will factor into anything with his relationship with Amy.

He seemed torn up that he had to hide something from Amy, and then he was uncertain about how casual her reaction was to it.

But would they have even teased the potential for a different reaction if it were meaningless? I don’t know.

(John Medland/FOX)

The situation with Rachel was another arc that was a bit underbaked, so we’ve simply moved forward like this, just… is what it is.

And Michael’s update with Nora was just a nice nod at them moving forward. It’s a big step for him to sell the house and split the proceeds with Nora for Simon’s benefit.

I chuckled when she told him to stop being so kind because she needed to hate him.

Hating him is easier to reconcile with what’s going on. It feels true to form that he would do whatever was necessary to make this divorce a smooth transition and to support Nora and Simon however he can.

I’m sure part of it is guilt, but he just generally seems to be that type of guy. But now, they’ve tinkered with him so much as a character that going back to this man who always seemed noble is just, I don’t know.

But hey, I love Michael. I’m glad things are smoother with him and Nora, and he seems to be embracing this next chapter of his life, even if the process of getting him there was messy.

(John Medland/FOX)

And I’m sorry, I still am fully embracing Doc’s Men In Black Mindwipe and enjoying Richard.

I love how he prefaces every valid and ethical thing he says with an acknowledgement that he’s the last person who should be saying it.

Sue me. I love a self-aware man.

Interestingly, he is a decent mentor, and I thought he handled TJ well the whole hour. He’s willing to cop to things as the senior authority in the room, but he calls things out and pushes back.

I can see where it took him some time to get to this place, maybe.

Max continues to be a pain in the ass, and the second we learned that the patient was a billionaire techie, I figured he’d be meddling in the case however he could. Why can’t the suits ever leave the doctoring to the doctors?

(John Medland/FOX)

And TJ, bless his heart, was so out of line as an intern, trying to bring up risky surgeries. His patient was a risk-taker, and that’s fine, but he also can’t get his hopes up about something that he can’t guarantee.

He got swept up in trying to impress the CEO and this patient, and it showed.

Richard was right about Voight having a God Complex, and constantly dangling the opportunity of taking his “business” elsewhere, so to speak, was irritating.

Max will jump through any hoop if he thinks it’ll get them money. But I respected that Richard was leveling with this man, and he wasn’t backing down or submitting to him just because everyone else was willing to do so.

Hell, Richard is even taking lashes when people assume it’s him screwing up versus someone else.

Is Doc sailing past some of what Richard did to get here? Sure. Does it feel like they’ve pivoted from him plotting to him just genuinely trying to turn a new leaf?

(John Medland/FOX)

Absolutely. Do I mind it, though? Not really. I can work with this version of Richard, even if I have to suspend belief.

He’s finding his footing, and he’s making this situation work. It’s also generally nice to see that he’s a pretty great doctor.

Damn you, Doc. I’m not a Richard hater anymore.

And it’s nice to see TJ under someone else’s tutelage. I also don’t know how I’m feeling about the TJ/Sonya thing. I need you guys to help me unpack their chemistry in the comments below. I’m torn.

Voight opting to freeze himself now rather than spend the last months he has alive with his wife was not the least bit shocking, ugh, rich guys. But that was generally a decent case.

But now I need to hear from you guys about this one, Doc Fanatics.

I thought this was a beautiful episode. I think Joan knew something was wrong for awhile before she found out the diagnosis.

If they had gone to Michael, Joan would have lost all control of the situation. That’s what Amy let her keep. Amy didn’t stop pushing her until she reached the endpoint Amy needed but she got to keep her legacy and dignity along the way. She got to go out on her terms. For someone like Joan that’s everything and I think Amy understood that. Joan hadn’t hurt anyone. How Amy dealt with it was loving rather than punishing and that worked for me.

I think no one else went to Michael because they weren’t willing to truly put themselves out there and be responsible for ruining Joan’s career. They know how good she is and no one wants that on them. That’s why Sonya was so quick to fold for the chance at glory. That’s why TJ was so relieved Amy was handling it. I think he thinks she can do anything so he was off the hook. And that’s why Jake passed it off to Amy. He spent the episode giving her grief about how she was handling it but he wasn’t willing to go to Michael himself. It was disingenuous to accuse her of aiding and abetting Joan when he was basically passing the buck. He knew what he thought needed to be done he just wasn’t willing to do it and wanted to give Amy attitude over not doing it for him fast enough.

I actually loved the flashbacks but I love Joan. I thought they really complimented the main story. It’s also cute how Joan brags to everyone about Amy. Even Javi overseas had heard all about her and how good she is. I’m going to miss Amy having that. The whole storyline just worked for me.

I love them but I thought Amy was very bothered by Jake saying he’d been keeping secrets for Rachel. I don’t blame her. I understand why he didn’t tell her specifics about Rachel’s problem but he could have told her the rest. I think if she’d known, she’d have been supportive of everything that happened but finding out he was hiding it is different. She tried to play it off but I think Jake knows things aren’t okay too. I don’t think it means they’re over though. They could use some drama not about Michael. With Amy though she could be over it by the next episode.

I don’t feel bad for Michael or Nora. As Michael said to Amy- you reap what you sow. I think selling the house and clearing out Danny’s room is going to shake Amy though and that I do feel bad about. I do hope they don’t rush into Michael and Amy now. I figure they’ll go there eventually, they are part of a triangle, but he needs to be alone awhile and deal with some of the issues that have shaped how he’s treated her lately.

Richard and the TJ and Sonya relationship aren’t working for me. It’s absurd that the tech bro wouldn’t find out what Richard did. The whole storyline didn’t work for me and the hero bend they’re giving Richard doesn’t feel true. TJ and Sonya just don’t click for me.

@Jasmine Blu, I think what happened with Rachel wasn’t as simple as right or wrong. Jake didn’t objectively do anything wrong. The way he did it was right for Rachel, it just wasn’t for Amy. They’re different women. I think Amy needed him to be more open. Everyone keeps things from her or feeds her half truths and she hates it. She was already dealing with it from Joan in this episode. He’d even jumped on her for trusting and believing half truths. I think she needed him to say something upfront like Rachel has something going on so I’m going to be supporting her. She doesn’t want anyone to know so I’ll give you details when I can. It’s not objectively more right than what he did. It’s just different and I think more what Amy needed right now. Sometimes you have to meet your partner where they are and he didn’t.

I think my issue with Michael is the vibe I get from the show more than Michael himself. Nora wanting to hate Michael was valid but of course she walked it back and said it wasn’t fair. While Amy has been ripped for her behavior, Michael seems to get a pass on all of his. I really need someone to say I love you but you screwed up instead of everything being okay all the time. I think I would like him more and feel more sympathy for him in his mistakes if he was ever held accountable for them.

I agree Richard was just meant to be an antagonist not a villain but they went too far with him for me. He took Amy’s trust in him and his knowledge of her injury and used it to turn her vulnerability against her and hurt her. If she had done what he wanted and kept that secret like he wanted, it would have destroyed her and if he knows her as well as has been suggested, he should have known that and he did it anyway. It wasn’t impulsive either. It was something he did for weeks and kept it up even after it was obviously hurting her. And none of it was necessary. He could have admitted it from the start and walked away clean. It’s too much for me and I don’t like that I feel like his redemption is being pushed on me.

It also doesn’t help that I don’t sympathize with him in the past. He didn’t lose Amy’s friendship after Danny died all because she changed. His own behavior chipped away at it when he judged her grief and resented her success. His whole justification was that he didn’t trust her because she was awful when all we’ve seen is her being harsh on mistakes but fair in dealing with problems. Nothing we’ve seen suggests she would have reacted like he said. He just screwed up.

I feel like Sonya and TJ are being thrown together to give them something to do and make her more likable. They don’t have chemistry and don’t have a great dynamic to build on. It’s all come out of nowhere and feels manufactured. I’m not a fan.

@Ann, Yes?! Don't leave me in suspense. 👀

@Lila, I think the Richard stuff may be an illusion. The things he did cannot be reconciled just because he was spiraling. He was cowardly and while he thought he was in control he pushed the narrative. What he did to Amy should have ensured he never work their again.

I love Amy, but her response to Jake was less than supportive and that is bothersome. You cannot share everything with your girlfriend, especially when its a family matter that has nothing to do with her.

Joan helped keep Amy ground in some ways. Without her, some dynamics will change. I think its possible that she is the firewall to keep Richard at bay (just possible).

Michael and Nora was a mess. She comes off so badly after we realize she was the reason for Michael's divorce from Amy. She is impulsive, insecure, and unnecessarily jealous, which may be why she is so rigid.

@Jasmine Blu, While I like this Richard resurrection, remember he did go nuclear to hurt Amy. It was too far beyond just life falling apart. Not owning up to his actions on his own terms is not a good characteristic to have. I am still thinking it rear its head again at some point.

This was a good episode. I was pleasantly surprised that I too liked Richard. I hope his character stays this way.

Sonya and TJ are a bit annoying, but at least they admitted that they were self serving hypocrites.

Speaking of TJ, I don't know the nurse's name but I'm looking forward to her finding out that he does date colleagues!

I am also glad that we are finally finished with the Nora drama and they can both move on with their lives.

In this episode, I don't see Jake and Amy as a long term couple.

@Jasmine Blu, In the Movie Crash everyone was crashing into every other different culture (mostly ethnic and racial). My point is they may have multiple crashes among the characters. It could get messy. I just thing its about to go down after a few quieter weeks.

Jasmine Blu

@Henry Allen JR, I'm trying to make the Crash connection here!

Friday 13th of March 2026

@Jasmine Blu, I have been looking for that Liz reaction for a while now. She will be justifiably upset. She has every right to point out TJ Hypocrisy. I expect some explosive moments coming up with all the variables coming into play almost simultaneously. Think the movie "Crash".

Jasmine Blu

Thursday 12th of March 2026

@Tbookfan, Yeah. It's more fun not hating him. LLOL!

I'm also wondering when Liz will find out that TJ dates coworkers, LOL! Messy. I think TJ makes Sonya more interesting and she needed a dynamic that was less antagonistic. I'm not sure if I'm all the way sold on their romantic chemistry, but I like the two of them having their own storylines.

Really? Interesting. I always look forward to hearing more diverse opinions about Jake and Amy because I'm so indifferent toward them, but the reactions I typically see are so strongly in favor of them all the time.

I don't know. I think they're going to have some challenges because that's usually what shows as this does. But it also seems like many people don't want them to explore any challenges, and there's always the vibe that their relationship is meant to be memorialized as this "one good thing."

The Joan arc was too nightly tied in a bow. Richard was fantastic and although I hoped he would get his, I am digging this version of him, but it is unrealistic that he could swing this far to the other direction. Max should get fired. I do not feel bad for Nora because she is wrong in this situation. I think TJ and Sonya are cute. I get a suspicion that Jake is going back to his exwife and Amy back to Mike.

Jasmine Blu

Thursday 12th of March 2026

@nandillly, I did expect more with Joan.

Jasmine Blu

Thursday 12th of March 2026

@henry, Yeah, that's how I felt about it too. It just got tied up very easily, and it was very neat.

I'm glad you're enjoying this version of Richard, too. I was wary of his return, but he hasn't bothered me yet, and I'm actually enjoying that they're showing him as a competent doctor.

I do think they have relied too heavily on feeding us the "unreliable narrator" concept, so now we're supposed to reconsider some of our thoughts because we only have them in part because of Amy and flashbacks. But the flashbacks-versus-memories thing gets too muddled, and it sucks that we were dropped into a period of Richard's life when he was horrible, so it's hard to walk it back.

Yeah, I rarely feel bad for Nora, to be honest. Max sucks. And I'm definitely wondering what they're doing with Jake and Rachel.

@henry, I do not like Richard--so sorry they brought him back--and I do not like Joan. They both were underhanded and deceptive with Amy--and I thought more would play out re Joan and Amy's relationship.

I liked how Michael and his wife ended their marriage with no drama although I am sorry it leads to him giving up the más oleum. Theirs was a mismatch that wasn’t going anywhere and they were obviously unhappy. Hopefully it will free him to take care of himself in addition it opens the possibility of an Amy and Michael reunion.

Natalie

Tuesday 17th of March 2026

@Jasmine Blu, I've enjoyed Rachel and Jake's interactions from the moment she was introduced.

I can see these two rekindling their romance. They obviously care about each other very deeply. They make sense, just like Michael and Amy make sense.

Jasmine Blu

Thursday 12th of March 2026

@Natalie, I don't really have any investment, but I did enjoy the Rachel and Jake scenes more than I expected. I can see how they were a decent match once upon a time.

Jasmine Blu

Thursday 12th of March 2026

@Ethanie, Yeah, I like that it was an amicable divorce, too. Sometimes, I hate divorce drama.

I think giving up the house is a good thing, not just for the financial aspect, but it's necessary for him to move forward. He's the only one who hasn't been able to, and I'd love to see him have that fresh start that he's never had since his son died.

It's rare I see the pro Amy/Michael comments.

Natalie

Wednesday 11th of March 2026

@Ethanie, so am I. I'm looking forward to an Amy and Michael reunion. They totally belong together, and Jake and Rachel suit each.
