Doc Season 2 Episode 3 Spoilers: From Professional Conflict to Potential Stolen Moments — Let the Drama Begin!

I don’t know much, but I know my senses are already tingling about Joan Ridley.

If you tuned into Doc Season 2 Episode 2, you’ll know that the series finally introduced Felicity Huffman’s new character, Joan Ridley, and it resulted in some interesting moments that have many of us on the fence.

And now, changes abound for Westside as Ridley steps into her new role on Doc Season 2 Episode 3.

(John Medland/FOX)

Did Michael Make a Deal with the Devil Unknowingly?

What was interesting about the episode was that Joan Ridley has been a part of many of these characters’ lives for some time, and she also has had a role at the hospital before.

She wasn’t unfamiliar to any of the other characters, only to us as viewers, and that’s a fascinating place to introduce a new character, because it means she comes with a storied, deeply embedded history that we know little about.

Joan also comes with predetermined dynamics with other characters.

As a result, it made sense on the surface with the board on Michael’s derriere, that his last-ditch effort to control things before he took his highly recommended paternity leave would mean choosing a Chief of Medicine on his own terms.

Michael’s interest in this also meant that he could protect Amy as well. In any other situation or hospital, they would have ousted Amy because she’s such a liability.

(John Medland/FOX)

But Michael likely hoped that putting in a “friendly” who he knows cares about Amy would mean that she’d have some protection at the job, since he has spent a lot of time standing between Amy and the board like a human shield.

Interestingly, he was so eager to get a jump on the board that he didn’t seem to bat an eye at how Joan was steering him toward picking her and then eagerly agreeing to all of her proposals.

Joan is the New Blood That May Be a Problem, Not a Solution

This decision has Gina and Amy reeling, and it’s clear that Gina isn’t a big fan of Joan, but now there are new reasons for Amy to be alarmed.

Now that she’s getting more flashes, her first fully formed memory involves Joan essentially telling her to divorce Michael, and it’s apparent that it’s not something Amy is taking lightly.

Joan, as a trigger point to prompt memories, makes the character even more fascinating, and now I wonder how far that will take Amy in her quest to regain her memories, and just how much she will want to know.

But the most pressing issue is that “New Blood,” a title that will likely factor into a medical case and also reference Joan’s position, will likely place Amy and Joan at odds.

(John Medland/FOX)

In the promo, Amy is playful about Joan keeping her seat warm, but Joan must’ve had her sights on this position, and she’s not taking it lightly.

Joan is implementing an evaluation after two months to determine who will stay and who will leave. It puts people on edge, because she’s clear that she’s not keeping everyone.

Amy Places Herself in Jeopardy and May Not Go Unscathed

It sparks a competitive edge in everyone that we haven’t seen thus far.

Still, it would put Amy directly in the line of fire because Amy doesn’t exactly abide by the rules often, and every other case, she’s putting herself, her medical license, and the hospital in jeopardy for the greater good of saving a life.

Joan doesn’t sound like she intends to cut Amy any slack; if anything, she may go harder on her because Amy’s absence could be to Joan’s benefit.

Of course, Amy taking on a medical tourism case that puts her at risk of jeopardizing the hospital by using stem cells on a patient and then possibly shocking her against medical advice seems like Amy is already on Joan’s radar and in trouble.

(John Medland/FOX)

Will she even last the two months in time for evaluation at this point?

The synopsis also teases that a recovering TJ will help a fellow veteran with his prosthetic leg, and I’m excited about the continuation of this arc for him on his road to recovery.

Plus, I love when they do arcs that showcase his being a veteran.

We also get some glimpses of the episode via photos, and I have so many questions about the messy love lives of these characters!

Will Michael Have to Confront His Marital Issues Without Escaping?

Michael managed to dodge Nora’s question about whether he was still in love with Amy, and now that he’s at home, he has all this time to focus on his new baby and deal with his marriage.

Work has been a great distraction for him, but without it, will the last fissures continue to tear them apart?

(John Medland/FOX)

It seems like he’ll have some loving moments with Nora, but also some tense ones with Katie.

Meanwhile, Sonya and Jake appear to be getting closer, quite literally based on one photo.

I’m wondering if Sonya is taking his clear breakup with Amy as a sign that she can pursue him.

They’ve been hanging out more after hours and made up, and Sonya is probably still riding high on telling Amy about herself.

But hilariously enough, we could be in for a complicated backlside because we also get a still of a very cozy-looking Jake and Amy.

(John Medland/FOX)

While he’s made things clear about how he feels and his uncertainty, there’s no denying that he loves Amy, and she has an effect on him.

Maybe they’ll share a moment, just enough to give the shippers hope and keep that alive.

I don't find Jake and Amy compelling at all. Honestly, if they're end-game, I don't think I'll continue watching the show. His character is too perfect and just beyond boring.

@Liv, I so agree! I don’t like Jake with Amy!

@Jasmine Blu, I do wonder about her upbringing as well. Where is the rest of her family? We've never seen them and she never mentions them. There was also no one who came to visit her in the hospital after her accident (except for Michael and Katie). Makes me wonder if her son's death wasn't her first encounter with significant loss.

@Liv, everything you said is interesting, but I wanted to comment on why Amy doesn’t blame Michael this time. I think it’s because of how she found out. When she first asks him why he didn’t check his pulse, she’s wearing the clothes she was wearing when she got the call. It was the same day, when she was probably desperately searching for an explanation. This time, she’d been dealing with his death for over a month when she found out about Michael’s involvement. I think some of the anger of grief had passed, and she wasn’t as desperate for a why anymore. The urge to lash out wasn’t the same either.

I’m not sure she even knows that she chose work that day which affects her reaction too. I think that’s why she didn’t have the urge to bury herself in work this time. The connection isn’t there anymore.

@Jasmine Blu, I do really appreciate your commentary. You're one of the few people I've seen with a really balanced perceptive. As for Amy/Jake, they were together 5 months prior to the accident. I just don't see how that's makes for some grand love story. They have no real history, and I don't think their chemistry is all that (that would require Jake to have an actual personality beyond being some fantasy of the type of boyfriend who doesn't actually exist). Every time I see someone say, "he loved her at her worst", I just roll my eyes. Loving someone at their worst, doesn't mean you make excuses for for their rude and self-destructive behavior, which is what he seemed to do in flashbacks (as did Joan interestingly). Being a great doctor doesn't excuse you from being a decent human being.

He says in episode one of the second season, something to the effect of when you reached past Amy's tough exterior, she was worth it. I just thought to myself, well duh. Isn't that person underneath it all the same person that Michael, Katie and Gina loved? It's just that - for whatever reason - he was the only person who got to see that part of her after Danny died. And I think that made him feel special.

This whole effort by Amy to retrieve her memories in order to remember a time in her life when she was over Michael and strictly in love with Jake is going to be interesting, as it may may prove to be woefully misguided. Wasn't the lack of confusion she felt then - if in fact it ever existed - dependent on the irrational blame she placed on Michael for Danny's death? Wouldn't she sort of need to return to that in order to not feel torn?

I do find it interesting that the present-day iteration of Amy - when presented with the same facts surrounding Danny's death - did not choose to blame Michael again. Either pre-accident Amy was privy to some additional information we haven't been presented with yet, or she used that blame as a convenient way to mask the true source of her anger. What she really needs to do is spend some time exploring why she had the particular reaction that she did. Not sure she needs all her memories for that, as those particular defense mechanisms were probably established long before her son's death.

You coming in with such a hot take, and I kind of love it!

I don't mind the idea of Jake and Amy. They can be interesting. I don't have any strong feelings about them as a couple, my only issue was that it felt like they got back together too soon given she didn't remember their relationship the first time. But I definitely had that same criticism of Jake in the first season. He felt the least fleshed out, and it felt like his entire personality was just ... loving Amy, which was a bit too boring. I'm interested in what they do with them this season but him specifically as an individual character. I want to see more of who he is on his own, not just as Amy's love interest.

It's rare I find anyone who doesn't like him or the pairing, though. Generally, viewers seem pretty passionate about him and the pairing, so you've been a surprise! :)

Hmm. I think the Jake Amy component is a real draw for this show. It’s kind of “old school” romantic, a modern day fairy tale. Jake’s character is so compelling, he’s a throwback to the days of Paul Newman, Cary Grant and Clark Gable. Personally, I want to see their happiness - there’s enough unhappiness and sadness in real life, let TV fantasy live! I’m not sure why their togetherness isn’t good for Amy? Jake has seen her at her worst, yet saw right through that and found the extraordinary person within. He accepts and loves all of her - good, bad and ugly, respects her, yet doesn’t bow to her. Among everyone, he broke through her armor and helped her heal. It’s beautiful! I think we want Prince (or Princess lol) Charming in our lives. The writers may be underestimating how many viewers will vote with their feet if they ruin that…

@Romantic@Heart, I agree Jake and Amy is a major draw, in particular his love for her even when everyone said she was bad. I think they can be good for her, and I think they have been. Right now she just needs time though and I think her insistence on Jake is making that harder. She needs to find herself again.

I don’t blame her though. Why wouldn’t she want to be loved like he says he loves her? When you’re being told you’re awful from all angles who wouldn’t want to hold onto the one person who says differently? And I want that for her. I don’t blame him for pulling away, he’s not wrong, but at the same time I want him to love her through this like I think she’s asking. I want him to love her like he says he does and I want to see her fall for him so that’s how I want this to shake out. Hence my excitement at pictures like this.

I agree that it very much is a real draw for the show. I think it's a great love story, and those take time and work, so I'm not expecting there to be aby shortage of drama and other things with how it unfolds. I think them being apart right now will make it even better when they get together, and I'm curious to see if we'll get more of their love story in the past to really round it out. A driving factor of Amy trying to learn more about her missing years is so she can remember Jake and her love for him, so that's about as romantic as it gets, no? Fighting for love and all that good stuff!

You really are a romantic at heart. I love it!

I am so sat for this. I love in the promo when Amy says, shocked, you’re reviewing my cases? She deserves to be slapped back for assuming she was protected and above everyone else but what about her relationship with Joan made her assume that? And is she right? I think at least initially, she might be. She’s not going to make it easy on anyone though. She’s too blatantly Amy. But maybe her maverick side is what Joan likes about her. Those moves are what make Amy different and special. Maybe the stem cell stunt is exactly the kind of thing Joan encourages even if officially she can’t.

Amy is my favorite but I like Jake and Amy more than I should considering it’s not good for her. That picture just reminded me of that. I’m going to be really put out if he gives her no response or the cold shoulder for reaching out. Not fair, I know. I think Sonya is definitely going to start moving in and I’m not here for it.

I don’t care about Michael’s home life with Nora. I know we have to see it to understand him. That’s just not the most compelling side of him, and she gets on my nerves. I want to see him figure out the truth about Joan.

@Lila, I love Amy to bits, but I also love when there's some challenge when it comes to her, so this entire dynamic will be very interesting to watch.

I do think Joan knows and respects that Amy is a maverick. I cannot wait to dig deeper into their relationship. It seems like one with some real layers to it, but I definitely keep getting the impression that Joan likes the progeny component of it all, until it gets in the way.

Sonya will probably try to move in, I just hope Jake isn't receptive to it. I do not see them that way at all. He treats her like a younger sibling. And I just hate how she trashes Amy to him. It dampens anything they could have, IMO.

I'm fine with Jake and Amy separate for now, but I know that they'll still have all of these teases.

I don't mind seeing Michael's homelife because it clearly shapes aspects of the character and even extends to things with Amy etc. But I don't care for Nora at all, so there's that. I like Michael, though. So I can tough it out for him. LOL!
