There’s a reason It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has earned the title of the longest-running sitcom.
Since it first aired in 2005, this show has gathered a dedicated following of fans who have fiercely followed the series through its ups and downs.
Its most recent, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, was met with generally positive sentiment, which is pretty impressive for a show that’s been running for so long.
Of course, we all want our favorite shows to run forever, but all good things eventually have to come to an end.
It’s Always Sunny has been renewed up to Season 18, and the next season might be the best time for the show to end.
Let’s Face It, The Cast Is Already Branching Out
Compared to the earlier seasons, the later seasons, especially Season 13, have been taking longer to come out.
This is mainly thanks to the fact that the main cast of It’s Always Sunny has been involved in other projects as their careers have progressed.
Most notably, Glenn Howerton was absent during a part of Season 13 since he was starring in the sitcom AP Bio at the time.
More recently, Rob Mac found success with Mythic Quest, which ran for four seasons on Apple TV+, as well as Welcome to Wrexham, a reality show with Ryan Reynolds.
And of course, Danny DeVito, and Charlie Day are always busy with new movies and shows that they guest star in.
Kaitlin Olson has also starred in a couple notable shows in recent years, including Hacks and High Potential.
Because the cast of It’s Always Sunny is only five characters, everybody needs to be on board for the show to succeed.
But this sitcom also started when many of these actors were in early stages of their careers and had the time to dedicate to shooting seasons yearly.
Now that the actors have all found success, they should be given the opportunity to shine in other shows and movies.
Of course, they all talk about loving working on It’s Always Sunny, but I’m sure at this point in their career, finding the time to fit future seasons of the show into their busy schedules is getting even more difficult.
It’s Always Sunny Deserves A Good Ending
Though I’m sure this show could run on forever, there’s always a risk that it might be cancelled.
With a guaranteed Season 18 in hand, it would make sense to tee up the series with a finale that could potentially serve as a finale for the whole show.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has already done an incredible job of proving its place in sitcom history and deserves a send-off.
Some It’s Always Sunny fans have pointed out that the show has been on air for over 20 years, and the spirit of the earlier seasons just isn’t captured the same in later seasons.
Additionally, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia loves putting Danny DeVito in precarious situations.
Considering that he’s already 80 years old, it might be time to let him stop putting his life in the direct line of danger for a couple of laughs.
That isn’t always inherently a bad thing, but people do watch sitcoms to find a sense of comfort in consistency.
Also, there’s nothing worse than watching a show run on for longer than it should.
I think we can all agree that the Gang may be bad people, but they do deserve a proper ending after having been around for so long.
