For most people, the start of summer means BBQ’s, pool parties, flowers and sunshine, but for TV lovers, its a time of reflection and recovery from the slew of finales that just rocked our worlds.
This year seemed extra heavy on the trauma and we are still drying our eyes. We saw characters die or skip town and there were characters dealing with loss and heartbreak of their own but we felt it too.
While your friends and family enjoys the summer fun, let’s relive the most heartbreaking moments from this past TV season because a good cry can be just as fun as beach volleyball, right? Right.

Cami’s Death on the Originals
It was obvious that it was coming, but it was still so painful to watch. It paved the way for the show to get better, but it sucked to see this character die.
Sara Finds out about Laurel’s Death on Legends of Tomorrow
Sara returns to 2016 to find that her older sister, Laurel, is dead. She returns to the Wavrider with one goal: to go back in time and save her sister. But Rip forces Sara to understand that she can’t. Sara goes to her grave and vows to honor Laurel’s name and stay on the Waverider with Rip to defend the world, just like Laurel wanted.
Lucifer Lost an Unlikely Friend
Who would ever have guessed that Lucifer would become so attached to a priest, but that’s exactly what happened when he met Father Frank. Lucifer couldn’t save Father Frank from death which left him crushed and went to his piano to play the most heart-wrenching rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”Tears flowed for days.
Olivia and Jake Won’t Make it on Scandal
Olivia and Jake’s tough realization that they couldn’t be together without Rowan killing one of them. Scandal can tug at the heart strings… sometimes.
Romero’s Reaction to Norma’s Death on Bates Motel
Norma’s death on Bates Motel was really tough. Yes, it was hard to feel sorry for her as she didn’t do nearly enough to stop her son from becoming the man he is today. But still (as commenter Steve Resin put it) watching Romero wailing like a wounded animal while cradling Norma’s lifeless body was really heartbreaking.
Losing Mick and Leonard on Legends of Tomorrow
Losing Mick Rory and Leonard Snart on Legends of Tomorrow at two different times was heartbreaking. The two are such close friends and try so hard to be tough to the core, that anytime something happens to either of them, it turns me to jelly to watch them crack. And when they reunite? Wow. These two really have IT.
Martha’s goodbye to Clark/Philip on The Americans
Martha’s goodbye to Clark/Philip on The Americans was heartbreaking, because even after everything she had been through, she still wanted him to be happy, to find someone else and live. She did decide she would do the same, but they had such a special relationship that seeing it end was quite gutting.
A Parting Shot on Agents of SHIELD
The spies’ goodbye to Bobbi and Hunter on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was so sad to watch. Seeing the crew gather and raise their drinks to their fellow fallen spies, without being able to interact with them, emphasized the pain each agent felt. Now that the spin-off isn’t going through, hopefully Bobbi and Hunter return to the team that loves them.
Francis’ Death on Reign
Francis’ death on Reign took a toll on Mary and Catherine, and it was so hard to wath them try and get along without him. The way he went out, too. He’d miraculously survived his ear infection, but is then attacked in the woods and killed.
Kara’s Guilt on Supergirl
Kara broke hearts on Supergirl after she was released from the control of the Red Kryptonite. The guilt broke her, and Melissa Benoist’s acting was outstanding, as she was faced with the horrible acts she’d committed, and the people she hurt. All while dealing with the fact that she’d lost the trust of National City.
Lincoln Saying Goodbye to Daisy on Agents of SHIELD
Lincoln saying goodbye to Daisy was super sad. Watching Daisy beg her team to help her as she sobbed in agony was totally heartbreaking. Daisy was already trying to manage her guilt about being swayed by HIVE but having Lincoln pay for her mistakes destroyed her.
Laurel is Killed on Arrow
Laurel Lance’s death on Arrow was shocking and unexpected. Her death was sudden, a last and lost plea to appease Damien Darhk’s villainous plot and affect the Arrow squad. She left behind her grieving father and newly-alive sister. There went the driving force for keeping the Lance family together, but perhaps her death will do the same. Rest in Peace, Black Canary.
Castle Rats out His Family Under Truth Serum
Castle – There’s no doubt about what Richard Castle would do for the ones he loves. He once tried to jump in front of a bullet for true love Kate Beckett and he proved there was no line he wouldn’t cross when his daughter, Alexis, was abducted. So when evil villain, LokSat, had him injected with truth serum in order to find out who else knew about the conspiracy, it tore our hearts out. Castle couldn’t stop from saying the names of his closest friends and beloved family, even though he knew it was a death sentence for them all. It was the best, and the most heartbreaking scene from the series finale.
Megan Dies on Scorpion
Megan’s death was absolutely heartbreaking. As soon as you recovered from one thing, like Sly giving Megan one last look at the stars, you’re hit with Walter breaking down over potentially not making it back in time to say goodbye. Then, after you think you’re out of the woods, Walter gets a video from Megan. Her death was devastating in the best way.
