These characters are just miserable. They even talk about it.
And you know what we have to say about it?
Don’t go changin’!
That’s right. We kinda love watching these miserable sots. Not only does their gloom make us feel better about our own lives, it’s what makes them tick.
Whether they’re good detectives, good doctors, good lovers or just good jackasses, their wretched lives only make them that much better.
Meredith – Grey’s Anatomy
Maybe it’s just working where does that makes her so miserable, because it is one of the incurable diseases amongst the staff workers at Grey Sloan, but all the drinking and dancing in the world can’t seem to knock the misery out of Meredith’s life. Her happiness is infrequent despite having good friends and adorable kids.
Harry – The Flash
So far, Harry isn’t downright Evil, so perhaps miserable is a win. And his daughter, Jesse, IS being held in a cage by evil dude, Zoom, and Harry’s inability to stop him is forcing his hand to work with him. But still, until we see a genuine smile on this guy’s face, there’s nothing to say he won’t always be hopeful more misery is on the way.
Ray – Ray Donovan
Ray could have it all. Alright, his wife, kids and family are all pains in the asses. We’d be miserable if they were our lot in life, too. But he doesn’t really do a lot to help the situation. If anything, he just digs himself in deeper, ensuring their happiness at his expense.
Quinn – UnREAL
On top of the fact she’s just a manipulative bitch, Quinn has the added pressure to do both her own work at Chet’s, for which he only treats her like a doormat, even stealing and selling her ideas as his. She gets her strength by treating others similarly, which ain’t good.
Andre – Empire
Is there anything more miserable than having no talent in a talented family? Even though he has a way with business and money, it still doesn’t match up to the criminal ways his father can get ahead. His good heart will always come up short.
Dougal – Outlander
Dougal wants what Jamie has, lock, stock and barrel and there’s not a single thing he can do to get it. He’s not even happy with the bonny time traveler of his own he has (not that she shares like Claire). Since he can’t get what he wants, he’ll wallow and try to make everyone around him do the same.
Norma – Bates Motel
Norma had one day, ONE DAY when she tried to make it about her, and her son unraveled to the point he started wearing her clothing and speaking as if he was her. She might as well just accept her fate. She’ll be miserable until she’s stuffed in the window by her beloved son and every day thereafter.
Piper – Orange is the New Black
Alright, Piper is in prison, but who else goes to prison and finds their hot ex girlfriend is spending time with them? Talk about luck! Still didn’t make her happy. And when they got together? She ruined it by shacking up with someone else. She just wants to make trouble for herself so she can whine and complain. Ugh.
Frank – Shameless
Frank seems to think the world is always wronging him and acts as if he doesn’t get enough money from the state. The harsh reality is that he does, but he just squanders it away on drink and drugs.
The Gang – It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The entire purpose of the gang from Paddy’s is to find something to make them not so miserable. Other than beer, which obviously doesn’t do the trick. But, with each incredible awesome adventure, they just remain miserable, or get a little more so. We wouldn’t want it any other way.
Diana – Younger
Diana has a chip on her shoulder. She seems to hold everybody else’s success and youth against them, thinking there’s nothing she can do to make her life any better. It makes her funny as hell. But you have to wonder, what would she think if she knew Liza wasn’t 26? She’d probably still be miserable.
Liam – Quantico
Liam has been the most annoying so far on Quantico. The main reason is that he hasn’t had a smile on his face and only seems to care about making people as miserable as himself. If he wasn’t miserable, we wouldn’t know what to do with him.
Sadie – Awkward
Sadie has been miserable throughout the shows five season run. She’s mostly a bitch because of her mummy issues, or so she thinks. The girl needs to get it together and realize that she has a great group of friends that will be there to support her more than her family ever did.
Jessica – Jessica Jones
Jessica’s edge is that she’s miserable. She’s never going to be a happy-go-lucky girl next door type. She’s always going to see the worst in people, but it doesn’t stop her from seeing the best if they try hard enough. Her rough-edged, hard-drinking miserable life just make her easier to support. Go figure.
Cornell – Secrets & Lies
The way Cornell handled the case on the freshman run was just wrong. She seemed to think she’d get closer to the truth by being a cold hearted bitch, but we got a few tidbits from her previous relationship, and it kind of made sense that she as taking her hatred for herself out on the suspects.
Alicia – The Good Wife
Is there a single time in the last few seasons when Alicia has been happy? She rarely smiles. She makes choices that will only make her even more miserable than she is now. She stays in a rotten marriage, doesn’t make enough money. Despite the title, we’d like to see her change. Even if just for one night.
Damon – The Vampire Diaries
Sure, Damon tends to get a kick out of life, but that’s usually at the expense of other people. It could be argured he was happy-ish with Elena, but it was so short lived and cut short that misery is still his go-to mental state.
