Nolan: We have to poke holes in their absurd defense and reinforce the idea that no matter the character of the victim or the defendant, it's irrelevant.
Maroun: They know that, Nolan. We've been pounding it into their heads from the beginning. But like it or not, they want to believe Nicole's story.
McCoy: I agree with Ms. Maroun. The jury wants to acquit, regardless of the facts, regardless of the law. It's too bad we didn't have a damn confession. It's okay to play the hero, Nolan, as long as you win. And right now, winning seems unlikely.
Nolan: She [Nicole] put on a hell of a show today.
Maroun: Jury ate it up, too. Juror number four had tears in her eyes.
Nolan: I get it. Her story's heartbreaking. But they have to know that she's lying, that this self-defense claim is nonsense.
Maroun: They know. They just don't care.
Nolan: If you're here to gloat about the confession snafu, I'm not in the mood.
Maroun: No gloating. I'm just the bearer of news. We just got word that Nicole is going to claim self-defense.
Nolan: Self-defense?
Maroun: It gets better. King's wife has been added to the witness list. She's going to say that she saw King attack Nicole right before the murder.
Nolan: While she was in the bar?
Maroun: You don't see that every day. Victim's wife willing to commit perjury to help the defense.
Nolan: Frank! What the hell was that? I told you five times the confession was inadmissible and you couldn't bring it up.
Cosgrove: Go to hell!
Nolan: Excuse me?
Cosgrove: I'm a cop. I catch them, you cook 'em. That's how this is supposed to work. Like it or not, I get paid to lie to people like Nicole Bell. Stop trying to save the world and do your damn job.
Henry King did some horrible things. He took something from Nicole Bell that she can never get back. Unfortunately, in the eyes of the law, that doesn't matter. When a good woman kills a horrible man in cold blood, it's called murder.
Nolan
Nolan: Why let the defense tear him apart on cross? Shift the focus away from the evidence and onto her sympathetic client. And the big, bad police department?
McCoy: Like it or not, Nolan, the big, bad police department is our partner, and in case you haven't been paying attention, they're under attack. Every decision, every arrest is scrutinized. There are people trying to defund them, for God's sake. And here you are, asking to castrate them?
Nolan: That's not what I'm trying to do. I just want to win this case.
McCoy: Can you win this trial without a confession?
Nolan: Yes.
McCoy: Your call. As long as you're willing to live with the consequences.
McCoy: This case is front page news, Nolan.
Nolan: It is. But with all due respect, that's irrelevant.
Nicole: Am I under arrest?
Bernard: Oh, no. But if you keep lying to us, we'll have no choice.
Shabaz: He offered me 50k. I told him to go to hell.
Cosgrove: Shouldn't have done that.
Shabaz: Why?
Bernard: King's dead.
Shabaz: For real? Man, I really needed that money.
Cosgrove: Well, unless you're in his will, you're out of luck now.
Cosgrove: It's these damn cameras. They cause a lot of trouble.
Bernard: Maybe. That's one way to look at it. Another is that cameras keep us accountable.
Bernard: First time in 20 years people actually care about a Black man getting shot.
Dixon: Not funny, if that was a joke. If it wasn't, you can save your speech for someone else because I am not in the mood for politics.
Bernard: We'd like to see the surveillance footage from last night, if that's possible.
Mrs. King: I'm afraid I haven't used them in years.
Donovan: Your husband is the most hated man in America and you don't even turn on the alarm?
Mrs. King: I'm from North Carolina. We don't even lock our front doors.
