The Bold Type Quotes
Jane: Jacqueline, I need to talk to you.
Jacqueline: Hmm, you don’t want to take over.
Jane: How did you know that?
Jacqueline: I didn’t know until right now.
Jane: Jacqueline, it has been a privilege to work for you, but this isn't the next step for me. I’m a writer, not a manager. Leading people, board meetings, strategy decks, ad sales, it isn't my passion.
Jacqueline: Wow, uh, this is a bit of a shocker.
Jane: Do you hate me?
Jacqueline: No, of course not. I’m proud of you.
Jane: I just feel like I failed you.
Jacqueline: Jane, you have not failed me. It takes courage and conviction to change course and to turn down an opportunity you know is not a right fit.
Jane: Thank you. So what now?
Jane: Well, the things we do for a story.
Ryan: I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s who we are.
Jane: Sorry, I’m meeting someone.
Ryan: For a new story? What’s it about?
Jane: Um, I’m figuring it out. Yeah, I thought it was one thing, but now I’m not so sure.
Ryan: Early stages.
Jane: Something like that.
Jane: Jacqueline, doing this job, do you ever miss writing?
Jacqueline: Of course, especially at first, but inspiring people, leading them to tell the larger story, Scarlet’s story, I’ve always found that the most rewarding. You will too, Jane.
Sutton: Richard was there that night. I slept with him.
Oliver: That night?
Sutton: And last night and at lunch today.
Oliver: Oh, Sutton, what happened?
Sutton: I saw him, and then we just fell into each other’s arms, but we still want very different things, and it’s complicated.
Oliver: Want to know my advice?
Sutton: Yes, that’s why I brought it up.
Oliver: Uncomplicate it. Of course, you’re gonna love him. You’re always gonna love him, but you cannot pretend there isn't an issue.
Sutton: That’s easier said than done.
Kat: What is it? Is there something wrong?
Adena: No, but maybe we should talk about what happened last night and this morning.
Kat: Yeah, I know it complicates things, but we can take it slow. See what happens one day at a time.
Adena: That’s the thing though. I can’t really do things halfway with you. That’s what you told me the first we broke up, which is what we do. We break up and we get back together and we break up again.
Kat: So, what are you saying?
Adena: Kat, I know that you hate commitment, and I respect that. I would rather this, a beautiful partnership, than to risk hurting each other and losing what we do have.
Kat: So, uh, what do we do? We just pretend we don’t have these feelings?
Adena: Yeah, yeah, I think that’s what’s best.
Jane: Why did you leave music three years ago? That must have been a tough decision.
Frankie Williams: I was lost.
Jane: Lost how?
Frankie Williams: I don’t know. It became less about the music and more about what people expected of me. One day I woke up, and I didn’t recognize myself.
Jane: So giving it all up was a way to find yourself again?
Kat: I don’t think I can do it.
Adena: OK, why?
Kat: ‘Cause Don’t Turn Away is our thing.
Adena: It could still be our thing.
Kat: Not if we’re working for a corporation.
Adena: What do you think a VC firm is?
Kat: That’s different. A VC firm contributes to your success. A corporation owns it, and I just feel really claustrophobic, and I think that’s a sign I can't do it.
Adena: Or maybe it’s a sign that you hate the idea of commitment.
Kat: Commitment’s not my favorite thing in the world.
Adena: Look, Don’t Turn Away is going to be a huge success no matter what. I just wouldn’t want you to walk because you’re afraid of losing control. Jacqueline’s not RJ, and maybe you can find a way to commit but still make it your own, if you want to.
Jacqueline: I have this gut that [Kat] is going to be asset to the future of Scarlet.
Oliver: Those three are going to run this place one day.
Jacqueline: Yeah, they are. It’s actually a strange feeling.
Oliver: What is?
Jacqueline: Well, Jane is ready. I want her to be ready. I spent years getting her ready, and she is now, and I don’t know. maybe, there’s a part of me is ready too.
Oliver: What are you saying?
Jacqueline: Maybe my vacation with Ian isn't a vacation. Maybe it’s the beginning of a new chapter together.
Kat: I took the Scarlet offer.
Adena: Oh my god, so Don’t Turn Away…
Kat: Is now under the Scarlet umbrella. Six million followers, and our budget is insane.
Adena: Kat, this is amazing. What made you change your mind?
Kat: Well, you were right. I was afraid if I committed to Scarlet, I’d lose control, so I went in there, laid out all the things I needed to make sure that didn’t happen, and Jacqueline said ‘yes’ to all of it.
Adena: Can you just think about all the people you’re going to be able to help now.
Kat: All the people we’re gonna help.
Richard: So how have you been?
Sutton: That’s a loaded question. Work is good, and you know, friends are good. Marriage…
Sutton: I just saw Richard. He seems happy.
Jane: What do you mean happy?
Sutton: I don’t know. He was smiling, and he ate an entire bowl of pasta. I mean who can eat an entire bowl of pasta in front of the love of their life that they’re about to divorce?
Kat: I mean have you ever heard of stress eating?
Sutton: It didn’t feel like that. I want him to be happy, but am I that easy to move on from?
Jane: Absolutely not.
Adena: You’re gonna take [Jacqueline] up on that, aren’t you?
Kat: I think she was just saying that to be nice.
Adena: No, Kat, she wasn’t just being nice. She was being Jacqueline, and Jacqueline knows a lot about building a magazine.
Kat: OK, I’ll talk to her.
