Recap

The staff sits in the breakroom, and Janine walks in. Melissa yells, "Disgusting!" and Janine assumes they insult her dress. Melissa is disgusted by the appearance of the green bubble in their group chat. Jacob admits it was him and that he got an android.

Ava and a news crew enter the break room to announce Teacher of the Year. The award is presented to Gregory Eddie, and he is in shock.

The news crew wants to follow Gregory around and get B Footage. He is in disbelief. Barbara explains that he could encourage black boys to be educators and that it makes the district look good.

Janine deals with a disruptive child, Deshawn, who throws books and tells her to shut up. She decides to have a Parent-Teacher Conference.

The district reps and the extra camera crew follow Gregory to the bathroom.

Ava gives Barbara a notice from the school district that she needs to complete continuing education coursework, or they will take her Teacher's license. Barbara is offended that she has to do these classes.

Janine asks Ava if she can move up the teacher conference for Deshawn's mom. Ava dismisses her but says yes.

The district rep films Gregory in class and tries to make him redo an authentic moment with a child. He asks them to leave, and she reminds him that he has to attend the ceremony. Melissa was chosen to introduce his award.

They chose Melissa because she was white. Ava announces it over the intercom, and Melissa is furious.

Janine and Gregory talk outside their classrooms. She asks about the award, and he asks about Deshawn. They are interrupted by Melissa, who wants to review how she will introduce Gregory.

They discuss his accomplishments which were few. He doesn't believe he deserves the award. Melissa decides to "regift" some of her own compliments.

Barbara approaches Jacob in the library to ask for his help signing up for her courses. He is giddy about helping her. He signs her up for a class called iGAL- Intergenerational Active Listening.

Gregory runs into Ashley, the teacher aide, who has been selected for Teacher's Aide of the Year. He walks into the gym, and they are creating a massive event with spoken word, a choir, and decorations. He leaves and is very uncomfortable.

Janine meets with Cassandra, Deshawn's mother. She is very sarcastic and rude to Janine as she tries to tell her how the child has progressively worsened.

Cassandra cuts her off, calls her the worst Teacher she has ever seen and tells her she has wasted her time.

Gregory walks by and overhears Janine crying. He tries to comfort her, but she's too upset. He takes her to Barbara, who is trying to find someone to have an Intergenerational conversation with.

She takes Janine aside and listens to her. She comforts her and lets her know that this will happen. She says success means coming back and not giving up on the student. Barbara asks her to sign her iGal worksheet.

Melissa gets Gregory from his classroom. He believes Barbara, Janine, or Melissa deserves the award. She agrees with Gregory. Melissa suggests that Gregory continue to improve, and one day he will grow into earning the award.

Ashley accepts her award and mentions all the schools that sent her home because she was so awesome. Ms. Washington notes Ashley's LatinX heritage and introduces Melissa as "Italian American."

Melissa uses a speech from the internet with heavy sports references to introduce Gregory. He tells the crowd he's a Ravens fan, and they boo him. He gives a poignant speech about not deserving the award but feeling privileged to learn every day next to the teachers at Abbott.

Ms. Washington again calls attention to his blackness, and they applaud him.

He checks in with Janine, who is feeling better, and Ashley approaches Gregory and shoots him down as a romantic interest. She shows them her love, Benito, on her phone.

Janine and Gregory walk away, making jokes, and Ava and Melissa mimic their lovey-dovey conversation.

Jacob helps Barbara sign into her class. Her instructor is Mr. Johnson. He introduces the class using Generation Z jargon, and Ashley is his advisor.
