Recap

In a courtroom,  a judge inquires if the defense and prosecution have reached a plea because this offense requires mandatory jail time. The prosecution states they have offered several deals, but he has refused them all. The judge declares the jury will hear the trial.

Jiro speaks at his mother’s seaside funeral. He mentions how she was the full-time caregiver for his eldest brother and always made time for her grandkids. One of the grandkids approaches his brother and offers him a tablet so he can always look at pictures of his mom.

They drop off his brother at his new nursing home. He had an accident when he was nine years old. The younger daughter asks about her uncle while the older child, Laila, scoffs at every remark.

Jiro gets his brother, Sam, settled in at his new nursing home. A lanky unstable man comes out and confronts Sam. Jiro asks what he means, but he replies, “Bad guy.”As Jiro helps undress, he sees bruises on his brother’s arms. He tells him the bad guy did it.
A social worker comes in, and Jiro confronts him about the bruises.
The employee takes him aside and tells him that Sam and Kyle Tanner (Ki), another resident— the lanky guy — got into an argument the night before, and it got physical. Kip gets territorial, and he vows to keep an eye on it.

Jiro and his daughter return from cleaning his mother’s house. They have Sam’s swimming floaty. She asks more questions about her Ojisan, her Uncle Sam, and his disability. He explains that he never could learn to swim because of a childhood accident and loved his floaty.

Jiro laments to his wife that he left his mother with the bulk of the responsibility for Sam. She never went on to live her own life separate from being her son’s caretaker.

His assistant, Ashley, calls with bad news. One of their clients got caught on film being verbally aggressive and throwing insults offensive to people with disabilities. He gives a press conference and asks for grace for his client, who may still be adjusting to a new country as a recent immigrant.

Jiro receives a call from the social worker at his brother’s facility saying they were in the ER and Sam had fallen down the stairs and was injured. Sam had never had an issue navigating stairs.

In court, we learn that he is in court for somehow protecting his brother.

Jiro asks Sam how he fell. He asks did someone push him, and his brother doesn’t respond.
He finally figures out that Kip took his brother’s tablet.

Jiro goes through Kip’s room and searches for the tablet. Kip gets agitated that Jiro is in his room and confronts him. Jiro meets with the administrator and lets her know his concerns.
They believe that because Sam can’t communicate well and in broken Japanese, he didn’t articulate the events to his brother and that he may have been the instigator.

On the stand, the administrator recalls Jiro’s demeanor at the confrontation.
The prosecutor tries to make him seem as if he is paranoid and could turn violent.

Jiro confronts his client, Videla, about missing Sensitivity training. Videlal makes insensitive statements about brain damage.

Ashley calls and tells him he is creating a hostile work environment for Videla. She puts him on a leave of absence. Videla will reconsider his complaint if he undergoes sensitivity training.

His wife tells him to let it go. He doesn’t believe Wildwood Gardens is being honest. He paid $500 to a private investigator and never got info if Kip had a violent history. He asks his wife to look with her DA clearance and see if Kip has a violent past. She refuses.

Jiro yells at Sarah and accuses her of not caring. They wake up their younger daughter with their fighting.

Jiro uses Sarah’s login to attempt to search the DA database. She catches him and tells him he’s fixated, enraged, and flying off the handle. She mentions they could both be out of a job. And he is hurt.
He feels as if he is finally not appeasing everyone. He admits he was wrong and apologizes.

She agrees to see if he will let it go and see a grief counselor. She searches the DA database for him. He doesn’t understand his anger. He feels like he doesn’t have a right to complain. He didn’t get the brunt of the car accident that hurt his brother.

She finds out that Kip does have a record of violent crimes. He was transferred to Wildwood Gardens after his sentence was commuted.
Jiro meets with the administrator, and she finds Sam’s tablet. Because of the theft, Kyle Tanner was transferred to another facility. She offers to launch a full investigation. He refuses, relieved that Kip is no longer an issue.
He meets with Sam, and they look at pictures of Sam with their mom. They reminisce about their mom while looking at videos and images.

The girls come in from swimming and offer to help him make a bento box for his brother.
Jiro speaks with his boss and tells her he is willing to talk to Videla the following day and take sensitivity training.

Jiro arrives earlier than visitation to drop off the bento box. The receptionist initially refuses but allows him to go to Sam’s room. He finds his brother bound to the bed and immediately releases him, and packs his stuff to take him.
The caretaker, Leon, enters the room, and Sam cries, “Bad Guy.” The caretaker tries to stop him, and Jiro slaps him across the room. Jiro attacks the man and leaves him on the ground. He escapes with his brother.

The prosecutor accuses him of being violent and asks whether his brother is safer with him.

The day they escape Wildwood, his boss calls and scolds him while he tends to his brother. The police arrive outside and try to come in to interrogate him on suspicion of kidnapping and assault.

The girls rush and get Jiro and Sarah crying that Sam fell in the water trying to get to his floaty. The police attempt CPR.

The prosecutor attempts to make him feel bad because of his negligence, mentioning that Sam could have died. Sarah asks the defense attorney to take a break, and she tells him they will take the deal. Jiro does not want to take the plea.

His defense attorney asks him on the stand why he won’t accept the plea deal.

He admits he was scared to take the full burden of caring for his brother, but his basic assumption was wrong. Caring for his brother will make them better parents and a better husband. He apologizes but tells them he can’t plead guilty because he could not get custody of his brother if he did. And he should have done that in the first place.

He brings the jury to tears.

Later, Sam is afraid to get the water, but Jiro tells him he can go in when he is ready. Sam jumps in the water. They all celebrate.

Accused Season 1 Episode 11 Quotes

I was angry. Yes, of course I was. But not paranoid. I’d seen the bruises, okay? I saw the look in my brother’s eyes. I knew, in my gut, that someone was hurting him. And no one seemed to care.

Jiro

Jiro: Words matter. When you make a promise, people expect you to keep it.
Vidal: Don’t talk to me like a child. I don’t have brain damage.
