On American Crime Season 1 Episode 11, when Russ finds out about Carter being released from prison he starts losing it. He tries to go to Barb to get her involved in pursuing Carter as a suspect and trying to get her fired up for a fight, but he is surprised to learn Barb has no more fight left in her and is ready to move on. Russ doesn't want to take his ex wife's advice and instead tries to turn to Gwen's father Tom for advice, but he's ignored by them as well. It seems like all the people around him are moving on with their lives and Russ isn't ready to let things go. Russ goes to find Carter and he takes the law into his own hands and shoots him in the head, killing him instantly.
At the hospital, Aubry is told about Carter's death and she can't cope with not ever seeing him again and she takes her own life as well. In one of the most poignant scenes, Aliyah embraces Aubry's mother as both women grieve for the people they love. Meanwhile, Russ's fate is revealed when Barb is asked to come in and identify Russ's body after he killed himself after killing Carter.
In Mexico, Hector is acquitted for his crimes because the witness who was testifying against him never showed up and they didn't know when he would show up. He finally decides to provide for his girlfriend and daughter and takes a real job in an office.
