Recap

Elena and Ruby drive to the pier. Ruby’s humming a song stuck in her head and yawning because she’s been sleepwalking. She tells Elena she feels very happy and light. Elena asks if she’s falling in love. She says maybe but she didn’t feel right talking about her new relationship when Elena and Javier had just ended theirs.

The guest, Gwen, arrives and she’s impressed by her first impression of the Island. She tells Elena her fantasy is to be a princess who doesn’t have to make her own decisions. She wants someone else to decide. She’s been writing entrance exams for the last few years and really wants to get out of her mom’s basement.

She went to med school for less than a year and then moved back home and has been there for three years.

She dissolves into tears explaining she doesn’t know what to do with her life. Ruby is sympathetic while Elena observes silently. After a moment, she lets Gwen know her fantasy will begin once she’s had some time to freshen up.

Gwen settles into her room and decides to soak in the bath. She falls asleep and wakes up suddenly in a wooden tub when a kettle of hot water is pouring into her water.

She has two ladies-in-waiting attending to her in a tub full of rose petals and water.

She’s taken aback at the medieval surroundings. The older lady-in-waiting, Bea, reminds her she’s getting engaged today.

The younger lady-in-waiting, Fern, helps the other handmaidens dress and arrange Gwen’s hair. Gwen tries to ask about her intended but Fern isn’t forthcoming.

Javier drops off the flight report with Elena. Elena asks how Helene is doing and then requests that he come by to talk with her. She wants to explain the circumstances of their break-up.

Fern leads Gwen through a dark smelly corridor. Gwen asks where her jewels are. Fern explains her marriage to Prince Anton will save Cordova and in a year, she’ll have jewels to wear again.

Anton and his entourage are waiting when they arrive. As she walks toward them, Gwen drops Fern’s handkerchief. Lance, one of Anton’s men, retrieves it for her, apologizing that his hands are blackened by the charcoal he sketches with.

Gwen’s fantasy dad, King Yahir, introduces her to Anton. They sit together at the high table and he presents her with a red jeweled necklace.

Just as Gwen’s about to eat, Fern begins to choke and spit foam out of her mouth. The people around them realize she’s been poisoned. Anton pushes the food away from Gwen. Gwen is shocked that someone is trying to kill her.

In her chambers, Bea explains that the northern kingdoms fear Cordova allying with Prince Anton’s kingdom.

Fern hasn’t died but as the healers believe she was poisoned with cyanide, she has little time left. Gwen realizes that she might be able to help. She tells Bea to lamb’s liver and milk and mash it together. She calls for Lance and tells him she needs his charcoal.

Elena drops in to see how she’s doing. Gwen gets her up to speed and excuses herself to help save Fern.

Gwen finds the barber-surgeon applying leeches to Fern. She demands he take them off and then administers the lamb’s liver, milk, and charcoal concoction to Fern.

Under a full moon, Ruby sleepwalks into the water. Isla comes running on the beach calling her and wakes her up. She helps back to shore.

Lance sneaks into Fern’s room where Gwen has fallen asleep in a chair. He wakes her up to tell her that Anton would like a private word with her.

Anton tells her that they must get married in the morning to prevent the northern kingdoms from attacking. He says her father is resistant. When she defers to her father, Anton becomes threatening and insists she go to her father in the morning and tell him she wants to marry immediately in order to protect the kingdom.

Gwen is frightened and agrees to talk to her father. Anton is appeased and departs.

Bea checks in on Gwen and Fern who is looking better. Gwen asks her about Anton. Bea insists he’s a perfect husband for her. Gwen expresses her apprehension but seeing Bea’s expression, she agrees to bury it.

Lance arrives to summon her to Anton. She tries to decline, but he’s insistent and Bea backs him up.

As she leaves, Fern wakes up.

Lance leads her down an unfamiliar route. When she questions where they are going, Lance reveals that he saw Anton’s valet in the kitchen before the banquet and at dawn, he searched the valet’s bags and found cyanide. He claims Anton wants her dead and he plans to get her to safety.

Gwen hesitates and asks how she can know he’s telling the truth. He’s blunt and says she can’t. She follows him into the woods. He explains Anton wants to launch a war against the northern kingdoms. Killing her and placing the blame on the north gives him justification.

Gwen’s feeling overwhelmed and tells Lance that she can’t handle all of this. He refutes that, stating she’s already shown ability and confidence in her skills by saving Fern’s life.

Lance sets up a camp and starts a fire. They talk about skills. She asks him to sit closer for warmth and when they’re close, she kisses him.

Isla and Ruby cuddle in an infinity pool. Ruby tries to get Isla to define their relationship but Isla evades it.

Gwen wakes up in Lance’s arms, sleeping on the ground in the woods. She gets up and starts gathering firewood. The search leads her away from their fire and Lance so that when Anton’s soldiers arrive, she’s able to hide behind a tree.

The soldiers try to beat Gwen’s whereabouts out of Lance but he doesn’t know so he gives them nothing. They tie his hands and take him back to the castle. Gwen sees that they left his dagger with his things on the ground.

Disguised in his cloak and hood, Gwen returns to the castle and finds Bea in her chambers. She tells her what Anton is up to and plans to save Lance and tell her father everything.

Ruby finds Elena having tea. Elena’s annoyed that Javier hasn’t come to have their talk. Ruby’s obsessed with a song she keeps hearing whenever she thinks of Isla. She feels like she’s going crazy and says it’s like Isla’s a mermaid or something.

This twigs something for Elena. She asks why Ruby thinks Isla’s a mermaid. Ruby mentions how she’s always in the water and can hold her breath forever. Elena assures her mermaids are not real even on Fantasy Island.

Gwen sneaks into the dungeon and frees a badly beaten Lance. As they’re making their way to the courtyard, Lance falls and Gwen discovers the wound in his side. She panics, considering the wound could get infected and infect his blood. She has a lantern and his dagger and realizes she can use them to cauterize his wound.

At the last moment, she chickens out and drops the red hot dagger to leave. Elena’s waiting and asks where she’s going.

Gwen admits that she didn’t leave med school for the reasons she gave originally. A professor in first year had told her she couldn’t be a doctor because she panicked in the ER when a badly injured car accident patient came in. Elena tells her what she did then doesn’t matter. What matters is what she chooses to do now. She tells Gwen to save her friend and disappears.

She goes back and cauterizes the wound, giving Lance a handkerchief to bite down on.

Elena waits for Isla on a floating dock. She confronts Isla about Ruby and warns her away. Isla is defiant, stating she doesn’t work for Elena and the Island needs her kind. Elena responds that they need the Island more and repeats that she is to stay away from Ruby. Isla swims away, slapping the water with her pink tail.

Gwen and Lance emerge from the castle to be confronted by Bea and Prince Anton. Bea’s betrayed Gwen in exchange for a royal title. Anton accuses Gwen of being weak. At that moment her father’s men surround Anton’s. Fern stands at the king’s side. Gwen is triumphant.

Anton and Bea are taken to the dungeons. Gwen explains how Lance saved her. The king promises him a position as a knight. Gwen promises to visit while he heals.

Gwen and Fern celebrate together. As Gwen enters the castle, she exits the fantasy and returns to the Island. She’s crestfallen. Elena reminds every fantasy must come to an end.

Elena points out she got a parting gift, but Gwen is unimpressed with Anton’s necklace, she wants to know how Lance is and if he recovered. Elena tells her the necklace isn’t the gift, there’s a charcoal portrait of her waiting on the table.

Elena explains she got the portrait from another guest, a comic book artist who just completed his own fantasy. Gwen turns around and finds Lance in modern clothes.

They embrace. She asks him what he’s doing on the Island. He tells her his fantasy was to be a hero.

Elena finds Ruby waiting on the beach in the dark. Ruby says she was hoping to see Isla. Elena offers to raid the kitchen with her for some flan. Ruby wonders about the suite with endless cheese.

In the morning, at the dock, Elena asks if Ruby’s still hearing that song. Ruby admits it’s gone. Gwen and Lance arrive to leave and are both set to tackle life again. Lance plans to write his next comic series about Gwenivere of Glendale.

Before leaving, Javier comes to talk to Elena. He tells her he doesn’t want to know why she broke them up without letting him weigh in. He won’t let her explain because he wants to stay mad and prevent her from hurting him again. Elena’s heartbroken but says she understands. He leaves, and she turns back to the Island, looking miserable.

Fantasy Island Season 2 Episode 9 Quotes

Princesses, they just have to smile and wave and they’re good. I could use a little of that. Also, jewels.

Gwen

I just… I just don’t know what to do with my life, and I’m tired of thinking about it, and it’s just too much pressure.
