Review Quotes

Eddie gets made fun of at school for not having the right sneakers which fits in with the general sentiment that the Huang family is still struggling to fit in.

Jessica is trying to fit in with the gang of neighborhood ladies but they're a little dismissive of her and won't eat her Taiwanese food. It is through her hang-out sessions with the gang of neighborhood ladies that she discovers that there's a big block party coming up for the Daytona 500.

This gives Louis a cause for excitement as he sees the block party as a great place to promote his floundering restaurant.

The Huangs meet a young neighborhood wife named Honey who forms an instant bond with Jesica over Stephen King novels. Eddie also sees potential in Honey.as a love interest. This isn't so much in love with her but the rap music he listens to advises him to get a fly girl and that will be his ticket to popularity. Emery fails to convince Eddie that courting a grown-up is ridiculous.

The Huang family indirectly learns that Honey is seen by the community as somewhat of a gold digger who broke up a marraige. Louis cautions his wife that a continued friendship with her could lead to the family (and restaurant) being shunned.

At first, Jessica takes this advice and agrees to do a karaoke number with the gaggle of neighborhood wives.  However, when Jessica sees that Honey is the only one willing to eat her Taiwanese food, she has a change of heart and sabatoges the karaoke number with a love song for Honey.

This changes everything. Honey is touched enough by the number to not just resume her friendship with Jessica but also help Eddie look cool by giving him a sensual three-second hug. Meanwhile, Louis sees his wife's vocal talent is the perfect addition to boost attendance to his restaurant and advertises her as a center attraction.
