Law & Order: SVU Season 18 Episode 15 involves data mining.

A woman named Jennifer is dating a man named David Willard, who is the owner of Attention Inc. Attention Inc specializes in developing a data mining app that Willard claims he is using to create transparency in the world.

Jennifer soon turns up dead and is apparently the victim of a serial killer. However, Jennifer's sister doesn't think this makes sense because Jen didn't drink and the killer targets drunk women.

The serial killer is caught, but Benson doesn't think he killed Jennifer. The ME's report is contradictory and it is soon found that someone hacked into his email and then blackmailed him into changing his report. The ME tries to commit suicide but Fin talks him out of it.

Benson is convinced Willard is behind Jennifer's death but thanks to the fake ME report they have no evidence. She asks Barba for a warrant to search Attention Inc, but Willard calls Barba and blackmails him into recusing himself from the case.

Benson gets a warrant anyway and ignores Willard's threats. Laura gives her and Rollins new info that leads to proof that Willard killed Jen.

Meanwhile, Barba's career is on the line because of an unethical thing he did years ago.

Benson: I'm so sorry.
Lauren: I don't understand. I thought that guy went after drunks outside bars. Jen wasn't like that.
