Recap

An accident cuts the electricity to Easttown residents.

Drew is panicking, but Mare and Siobhan have him.

There is a woman driving the car. The police officer investigating sees it's Betty Carol.

Frank and Siobhan are sitting together, and he apologizes that he doesn't ask her how she is nearly often enough. She got left behind in light of their marriage troubles and problems with Kevin. He's not going to do that anymore.

Siobhan tells him she met someone.

Mare is looking for the turtle when she sees the video on Siobhan's laptop. Then Mare heads to therapy where he talks about Kevin again. Yes, his behavior scared her.

The therapist wonders if there was a history of those diagnoses in the family. Mare's dad was sent from the house when he had an episode. Mare sees some in her past, too.

Mare has a hard time talking about her dad's suicide. it made her feel like she wasn't enough for him. Was suicide passed down from generation to generation, too?

She's hoping to find information that Drew won't follow in their footsteps. She's terrified of it.

Siobhan's girlfriend thinks that her documentary is beautiful. She wants Siobhan to talk to a woman she admires at Cal Berkeley, but you can tell Siobhan isn't thrilled about the possibility of leaving.

Mare's shocked that Dylan's parents asked if they might want to take DJ.

When Bill leaves a beer bottle behind, Mare considers it for DNA.

Brianna cannot believe that Dylan's parents want to keep DJ since he's not even related. She might be able to plead down to a misdemeanor. She's skipping college for beauty school.

She offers a shoulder to lean on if he wants to talk about it. Dylan says that if she doesn't want to come around, she doesn't have to. They were only dating two months when this all happened. But she remembers things from that night, and he wasn't around. he tells her to get the fuck out.

Katie hekps a girl going through withdrawal. Another girl, Hilary, was there and got pregnant. He didn't like that. She just says that he won't come for them tonight because it's poker night. He'll tie them up so nobody hears. Then he opens the door to tie them up.

Mare visits a friend about Katie, Missy, and Erin.

Lori's daughter is getting taunted at school when Ryan knocks down the kid and continuously smashes a cafeteria tray over his head.

Betty's funeral is packed. Mare wonders if Mr. Carol might be glad she's dead. Helen crosses herself. You can say that when someone's alive, but once they die, everyone's a saint.

Mr. Carol makes a speech. He needs to get something off of his chest. He tells everyone that he had an affair with Helen. On the way home, Mare cannot stop laughing. She can barely drive she's laughing so hard.

Mare has another date. Helen hoped she'd be wearing the red dress, but she tries something else. The date? It's with Colin.

She might be doing it only to talk about the case. He could be suspended for talking about it with her. It's a date, right?

Helen invited Carrie over so that she can help Carrie get a hang for his routine. She's offering a lot of advice and Carrie wonders why.

Colin asks Mare about the tortellini, talking about adventurous eating, and then she interrupts about the case again. He thought she was going to offer a bit of their tortellini. Instead, she's tying Hilary to the case. He's not happy.

Colin wonders why Mare didn't tell him that she went to Deacon Mark's old parish. Why is it he's showing all of his cards, and she's showing none?

His mom said Mare would only see him for the case, and she was right.

Lori is crying in the bedroom. John tells Ryan it's all his fault, and he'll fix it. He promises. But Ryan doesn't even look at him.

When Mare kisses Drew goodnight, she remembers Kevin both screaming at her as an adult and as a child in happier times.

Jess hangs out with Dylan, sharing with him what she's told Mare before grabbing a toke on a joint passed her way.

They're on the way to get Erin's journals. Jackpot.

Driving past the Carol's house, Mare gives chase to someone right into his house. It's an old man, who now has a bloody nose.

Deacon Mark is at a pizza joint when a girl says he's the guy she was talking about. Apparently, he raped some 14-year-old girl. They follow him outside to his car. He drops his keys, and they toss something into his face, chasing him.

Dylan wonders why Jess is reading the journals. They're burning them. She slides one in her pocket before tossing the last on the fire.

Mare is in trouble again. The old man wanders out after she's asleep and forgets which house is theirs. What kind of idiot thinks he might be the murderer.

Mark is crying, battered from the kids when Dan check on him. He screams at Dan to leave, and Mark breaks down. He can't anymore. He tells Dan everything. With a previous accusation, he panicked. Dan asks if he did... what? Kill her? Would he believe him if he said no?

Colin's mom doesn't understand why Mare is coming over if she's off the case. She knows Colin likes her because she knows him better than anyone and sees the way he looks at her. She just wants him to be careful. But his whole life has been about being careful, and look where that got him.

They're meeting with a couple of girls who use the same sight as the others. A girl has a harrowing story about surviving an attack. Her name is Ali. The guy was white, had a beard, and smoked Winstons.

He was in a van, a work van, maybe. It was blue. She wrote down part of a license plate. Colin has country run it.

Mare tells Colin she's sorry and why. She also explains why she can't let go of the case, and Colin admits he didn't solve the case he gets credit for. Her parents hired a PI since they weren't working fast enough. He filed the search warrant acting on the PI's info. He really just wanted to something great.

Results in on the van. He kisses her. How does she know what he wants?

They stumble upon the right guy very quickly. He's got AC/DC blaring, and Mare wants it turned down. He smokes Winstons. Mare and Colin get their guns ready to draw, and the guy has a gun in his back trousers now.

Upstairs, Katie knows that people are here, and they're not chained up, so he wasn't expecting them. They begin beating on the pipes, and there's no mistaking it. There's also a camera. Mare can breathe. The girls begin rattling the shit out of the pipe, and he shoots Colin right between the eyes. Fuck.

Mare is on the run, also shot and bleeding. She finds the girls and dials 9-1-1. The guy's got cameras all over the house and knows exactly where she is. She spots the camera just seconds before he comes up on her.

She gets a second to get up on him and the chase is on again, with his gun blasting. She gets Colin's gun and kills him. The police arrive seconds later, and she hears Kevin's voice in her head.

Mare of Easttown Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

Carrie: Why you helpin' me?
Helen: It's purely selfish, dear. I'm afraid you'll get custody and you'll cut all of us out of his life, and I can't bear to lose another one.

Brianna: You know, there are things from that night. When I woke up, you weren't in bed.
Dylan: I was probably in the den feeding DJ.
Brianna: No, you weren't out in the den.
Dylan: Then I was probably out here smoking.
Brianna: You weren't out here smoking, either. Dylan, I walked around the whole house and you weren't anywhere. Where'd you go, Dylan?
Brianna: You should probably leave. Get the fuck out of here, now.
