Recap

John remembers being with his family in 1981. His dad is asking him to name the cities along Route 66.

When they go into his office to play chess, Ben smokes a cigarette, giving John a gum cigarette to play along. His wife wants him to check the phone. There's a clicking sound. He pulls a gizmo out of his desk and begins looking through the phones for plants. He says there's no more phones, and tears the wires right out of the wall.

Jo Madi is at the sight of the explosion. Bodies are charred beyond belief. An agent doesn't want her help, but she says she knows Weir and his people well. The other agent is named Rash or Rush. The girl who worked with John is alive.

Hailey is checking out of the hotel. John is outside waiting for her, telling himself it's a really really bad idea. His ex-wife calls. He's trying to put it together with in his mind. He says nobody is supposed to die. It's a lie, and he doesn't know where it came from. He tells her about Valence jumping, with a calm stare as if nothing else mattered.

A couple of detectives come for Hailey. They probably aren't detectives. She questions it when she sees it's a Mercedes. She starts pulling away, and they taze her. John jumps out with his camera, asking questions, saying we see you! Everyone around them also films, and John gives her the cue to escape.

He's still convinced that she's not who she says she is, but it's making her very angry. He keeps pushing, but she's sticking to her story. She calls him racist based on his reductive behavior when he saved her.

He gives her the choice, blindfold or trunk. He doesn't want her to see where he's going.

Jo talks with Kyle the intern, and he doesn't have much he can give her. The other agent wanders up and gives her guff again.

Kyle sends a message: Told them what you said to say.

He's at his childhood home again. He remembers his parents fighting and him and his dad having target practice. Dad tells him that him and his mother are moving away for a long while, so he might not see his dad for a while, either. Then it's his funeral.

A stranger comes up to him at the funeral and says no one will ever know this, but your father died fighting for this country. He did what he did to keep him and his mom safe.

John pulls Hailey out of the trunk. Once inside, he pounds a hole in the wall and pulls out some cash. He wants her to tell him what she's not telling him. He says there's no version of her that makes sense to him, but she counters that none of this happened until she met him.

She asks if he has a computer, and he bangs some more holes in the wall to retrieve one. He discovers that it was his coworkers who created the dating app account, but he doesn't know why and can't ask them.

He's letting her go on one condition: he never saw her. She looks at her messages and says fuck no, she's not going anywhere when someone is trying to kill her.

Another memory of childhood. He doesn't want to move. What about his friends? What about dad?

John gets the guy who was with Valence into a bathroom to shake him down. He says he was paid to kill Homm, and he did make it look like Homm was dead. He needs to know who wanted him dead and why. The guy says they're dangerous. John says he'll take what he knows to the police if he doesn't help.

The guy is scared shitless. He says he has no idea who it is. Nobody has ever seen him. The authenticator to access Valence's comms were in his pocket when he jumped. At that moment, the autopsy is being done. They found the keyfob and a strange earpiece communicator.

John buys a badge-looking thing from a street vendor and gets himself into a local precinct as if he belongs there. He even gets buzzed into the door.

Meanwhile Madi is watching Kyle. He sends a message that says he's on his way. He's been talking about "his boss," but I don't think his boss is John.

John gets a detective to wander off, and he sits at her desk. Oh, there's Kyle. So maybe he has been talking with John. John is taking notes about files. He gets a box of evidence, and inside are all of Valence's personal belongings, including a fancy gun and the keyfob.

John walks out with the box, running right into the other kid. He's there to get the keyfob and beats the patoot out of John. The kid has swing kicks. Hailey is getting the idea she wants to help, and she runs him over. The whole time, Madi is watching, wondering what the fuck is going on.

Yep, John found his dad with his brains blown out.

Oh, no. Actually, Charles Dance is his dad, and he's in the house.

Hailey: This is a straight-up murder house.
John: I don't need you or your commentary right now because I need to think, and I'm running out of time.
Hailey: Time for what?

I am not some psychotic killer person, OK? [Homm comes up the basement stairs, bound and gagged]
