Recap

Ben is talking to both John and Valence about the plan and the absolute trust they must have in each other to carry out the plan. Nothing else matters but the plan. The enemy is everywhere. Nobody can see him, but he can see everything.

John and Miles have known each other since they attended that school. When John sees how good Miles is at math, he enlists his help. They talk about ciphers and codes so that John can get into the safe.

2013

John and Miles are working together to present a mass psychogenic event that, with a few carefully placed reactions, can create a nightmare scenario. During a Mac and Cheezies test group, plants make everyone else think they're sick, and it buys the competitor time to catch up.

Afterward, Miles shows John a study about Facebook data and behavior predictability with only ten likes. Miles says it's the future and very profitable. John's in.

That company is Arda Analytics.

John is walking through the basement after work when he hears Route 66 playing. He pushes open the door and his father inside, but John doesn't recognize him. He demands he leaves.

Ben won't be deterred and begins telling him the story of his "death." "He" had to be stopped, and he had them, but then the bastard went and blew up the goddamned plane.

We see in a quick flashback that Ben and a friend were in the room staging his death when they heard John out in the hallway calling for his dad. They fled after killing not-Ben.

John was a flaming mess after he saw his dad. Miles gives him a puzzle to do and drags out of John what the man had said.

John built his entire life around what they found in that safe, and now he's supposed to believe none of it was true? Fuck no! He says his dad thinks he's some kind of superspy. It's insane.

He told John about all the top-secret operations that would one day come to light that would vindicate everything he was saying. Like the Russians secretly orchestrating a terror-style attack on the Panama and Suez canals so they'd have the only viable trade route to sell oil to Europe and North America. That gets Miles's attention. He's not so sure it's a scam anymore.

In 2018, the terror-style attack is on the news. Ben is chatting with Miles and John about how government uses public manipulation to sway elections and elect favorable regimes. Crowley didn't see it as falling in line with American interests and started selling cutting-edge PSYOPS as a service to foreign governments and the highest bidders on the side.

Ben has been tracking him all these years. Now Crowley wants power more than money. He wants his own regime. He breaks down the book of how someone would accomplish it, noting that it's already happening, and he's too old and needs their help.

Ben is shocked that John can like turkey bacon, especially since banning fat was all a big operation by the grain companies to sell more of it. It worked, they sold a boatload of pasta, and now everyone is a fat diabetic.

They're seemingly carrying on this conversation alone until Ben says the only way they can be sure of Hailey is to kill her. She's sitting right there and takes umbrage to it. John brings up the faked suicide, and Ben defends himself. Hailey says no wonder he's so fucked up.

The discussion turns to Valence, and Ben says it's Crowley, so quit being so concerned about it. Every time Hailey interjects, they tell her to eat. Nothing is vegan, she says, and Ben says, Oh, of course, you're vegan.

John knocks some more holes in the wall for more supplies and cash. He begins trying to access Valence's file. He's not remembering that he only gets five shots before it explodes. He's remembering their love of ciphers and keeps trying. Meanwhile, people are watching his attempts to gain access from a large comms room.

Hailey wants to know how John responds to questions about his childhood. Does he tell the truth to see them squirm or does he make something up to be nice instead? John used to lie, saying that his dad was in the military and they traveled the world. Hailey chooses the awkward route.

Ben is trying to get Edward to eat eggs, and after some browbeating, the guy finally takes a bite. Ben says nobody wants to hurt him. They just want to find out why they want him dead. Ben wonders if he stumbled on Crowley. What was big enough to make him a target?

Ben had John leave the company to help lure Crowley toward Miles while he and John tried to take him down from the outside. The big advantages are that he thinks Ben is dead and doesn't know that John is his son. Arda was the bait.

Miles enjoyed being the bad guy and thought it was better to keep John and Ben away from Crowley. But they needed to cut ties, and with eyes and ears everywhere, John was worried. They were worried about each other.

Miles wonders why John didn't tell Ben about his family. He didn't want him knowing anything about his personal life. He just wants to get Crowley.

While John tries to guess the password, Hailey is in the backyard trying to use a phone. She enters her ID and password, but Ben sneaks up on her. She looks about as wary as you can get. She's hiding the phone, and now I don't believe she's as innocent as she claims.

He plays his lie detector game as if it's a game, but he's got another agenda. She says she works for the homeless aid network, and he believes her. But he wants her to show him what's in her hand. Huh? She raises her hand, and it's empty. She dropped the phone in the grass. On it was a trading app.

John is remembering Mile's instructions for ciphers that got them into Ben's safe. And that's how he correctly guesses Ben's password.

In the comms room, something has come up, which scrambles that team, but John's in the messaging server. The comms team wonders if they should cut him off of the messaging app, but the dude who worked with Miles is downstairs talking with Jo Madi. He figures it out and goes back. Cut him off!

When they get in the safe, John is very disappointed. His dad didn't care about him at all. But then Miles shows him how he got the cipher. The numbers spell John. Miles's latest password was Safety.

The other guy jumps out the window after botching the job.

I always thought she drank because he died. Maybe she drank because she knew he didn't.

John

John: My mom, your wife, she ran out of places to go. She died because of you.
Ben: She knew, John.
