Recap

Eleven days ago.

John pulls his team together and asks for their help. He wants them to prepare new identies and an office explosion.

John knew that Kyle the Intern was a plant, but he didn't know who planted him. John has the explosion planned down to Kyle's coffee run and the look of pain on John's face.

Today

Ben wanted to kill Kyle, but John has a rule against unnecessary killing. Ben notices John makes a dig about his age and wonders if he thinks Ben isn't up to the challenge.

John is calling phone numbers as Valence's freefall plays over in his mind.

Hailey apologizes about keeping information from him and wonders what John is doing. He's looking for who called Valence and gets defensive, but she says he doesn't have to sell her on it. Maybe it's more about losing his friend, which is a big thing in her world.

They talk a bit, and it's clear she wants to be trusted as she comes to trust him. He gives her 80%.

Homm has determined that Innerverse gives money to 141 candidates of all different political backgrounds. John wants to let his team in, but John resists.

John makes a call intented to lure Cara out of hiding. After he leaves a message, he smashes the phone and throws it in the trash.

Ben has a bleeding wound on his abdomen.

Madi is looking through files on John's team. She's going with her gut that John talked with his ex-wife about more than divorce stuff. She got denied access, but she's already there. Her daughter Chloe is in the backseat. She uses her daughter to approach John's ex. When she's left at the door, she uses it as an excuse to enter, chitchat, use the bathroom, and snoop.

Peter Weller is Crowley. His people have a black bag of what he could find. He asks if Gau had any revelations before his dip in the barrel. Just one thing, the guy says as the pull the camera away.

Madi is on the toilet trying to suss out a wine label. She later tells the ex that as a fellow day drinker, she'll call her so they can have a couple drinks in the future.

Madi has Anna start a search on employee emails and phone numbers.

That wine was Cara's. She had it in the office when they were planning the explosion.

Edward is talking about tax code and corporate donations because he realized individual donations might be more fruitful. Senator Nora Evers of New Jersey is the recipient and she will be running for office. He stakes his career on it.

Suddenly, someone tosses a stun grenade into the office. Edward didn't cover his ears and can't hear, so he's talking loudly and still standing when the area they're in is breached. He's shot, and then screams he's shot, they shot me, as the smoke grenade comes in, so he's screaming, why's there smoke?

Everyone gets out, but without hearing, nobody can calm Edward, who says he still wants Stacy even if she did it with Top Knot Kevin.

John is running everyone through his memory, trying to understand who could have ratted him out. Ben says it was Valence. He turned. It's right under his fucking nose.

Madi realized that Cara had just bought and filled a wine fridge but that it wasn't full when she died. Rash doesn't care. They got DNA confirmation on a dead team.

John is imagining Miles dropping to his death and the look on his face doing so. He's struggling with his anxiety.

Ben and Hailey are plying Edward with whiskey so they can dress his wound. That poor bastard.

Hailey tries to give John comfort about Valence, but he says he's got to consider it was either Valence or it's someone inside his circle. She lays it on a little thick, reaching for his hand, saying she's sticking around for him.

When she continues on her journey to get ice for Ben, she passes the manager.

John continues his phone calls. One of the numbers rings nearby. It's Ben. He was the last person to talk with Valence. He told him to jump.

On her way back, Hailey notices the manager has been shot. They all run into the woods, but the gunmen are right behind them. It's a man and woman all dressed in black.

Madi is texting and driving in the city, and she's going way to fast for it to be at all believable. Chloe calls her out on texting and driving.

Ben tells John he was trying to warn Valence that things went pear shaped with the intern.

Flashback to the team telling the intern to go far for their meal. It's a damn good Reuben. Ben is waiting outside for the kid and follows him to the restaurant. Kyle gets a call from Eliza who is being clingy.

Kyle does not take the easy route to the restaurant because he knew he was being followed. It was Kyle who stabbed Ben. Kyle also stole Ben's gun and silencer and called Crowley. I'm burned. They tried to kill me.

Now, Ben says he was right about Kyle, and he didn't tell John because John needed to stay focused and stick to the plan. He admits that if he told John what happened, he'd have to tell him everything else, too. His team.

Madi is at an office and dials Cara's number. She finds bodies. They're dead.

Kyle killed them with Ben's gun. Ben got there right after and saw Kyle arranging the bodies. He gets to the office, though, and sees three more bodies. WTF?

Kyle was in the office when the explosion hit. John's team tried warn John that Valence was behind his outing, but he didn't think it. But now, John reveals that he called Valence to warn him about Kyle and the dead team, and that's when Valence left a message for John. Tell him I had no choice.

The gunmen are outside, and everyone wants to run, but John is holding back. Then John figures out how they're being traced. The gunmen enter the room and see the whiskey bottle has been left behind.

Kyle is watching Nora Evers announce her candidacy for president, but he can't stop thinking about Cara begging for her life before he shot her.

Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 5 Quotes

John: For those of us who lie for a living, our only connection to reality are the people who really, really know us, and for me, that was Valence and only Valence. So when we agreed to cut off all communications to do this, I lost that, and it's affected me.
Hailey: No, I get it. Growing up without a real home, you look for it in other people, and for you, Miles was home. I know we haven't known each other for very long, but I haven't had anyone like that in my life for a long time, either, someone you can just be real with, you know? Chicago, the money. I'm actually glad that I don't have to keep that secret anymore, especially from you, so, you know, I thought, since I'm good with you knowing that about me.
John: So you thought I should just trust you now?
Hailey: That's usually how it works, yeah.
John: Well, honestly, I don't know how anybody trusts anybody, give all you've got to go on is someone else's word.
Hailey: How about you try to trust me just, I don't know, 90% more?
John: Ninety percent? Jesus Christ. Seventy-five percent is high.
Hailey: Oh, fuck you. I think I deserve at least 80.
John: Alright. Eighty percent. I think you've got yourself a deal.

Ben: We should kill that Kyle kid.
John: Well, there's a surprise. You do know that the Cold War's over, right?
Ben: He could be working for Crowley.
John: And he might just be an innocent FBI informant.
