Recap

In the repair bay, a recorded Martok (J.G. Hertzler) introduces a Dungeons ‘n’ Dragons-type campaign for the Lower Decks crew, Bat’leths & Bihnuchs. The Lower Decks team is excited to start the game.

As they play, Mariner bemoans the fact she’s under Ransom’s thumb. Just then, Ransom contacts her to rush her to their mission briefing.

After Mariner leaves, Tendi informs Boimler that Vendome has made Captain on the USS Inglewood. Boimler is incredulous. Tendi points out that Vendome was always saying yes to new opportunities. She suggests that’s what put him in position to become a captain so quickly.

Boiler rejects the idea of taking risks and chooses a cautious approach on Bat’leths and Bihnuchs, resulting in being defeated and living out his life as a dentist.

Ransom and Mariner lead an away team with Rutherford and Billups to Dulane to repair their orbital lift. Instead of having the engineers do the repairs, Ransom orders them down to the planet to liaise with the locals while he and Mariner fix the lift.

Boimler is discouraged that he’ll never be promoted. Tendi encourages him to open himself up to new opportunities.

Another crew member, Sherwins, invites Boimler to play in the springball tournament. Initially, Boimler rejects the offer but Tendi gives him a push.

After Shaxs hears him scream during the tournament, he offers Boimler a spot in his choir. Boimler says yes and Shaxs is so impressed with his soprano pitch, he lets Boimler know he’s always good for a favor.

After choir practice, Chief Lundy approaches Boimler to be a model for a life drawing class. Once again, Boiler steps up.

On the lift station, Mariner is annoyed by Ransom. Billups touches base with them and he and Rutherford let them know how hospitable the locals are.

On the ship, Boimler lets Tendi know that she was right that he needed to open himself up to opportunities. He takes her advice to the extreme and vows to say yes to everything from now on which she doesn’t endorse.

They are approached by a large alien named K'ranch. He explains he needs to hunt and asks Boimler to be his prey.

On the lift station, Ransom watches a DIY repair video. Billups contacts him again and informs him the locals are angry at him and Rutherford for not showing their navels in a sacred place. Mariner wants to go help but Ransom insists they can handle it and orders her to complete the repairs.

Boimler checks in on K'ranch to see if he means to actually hunt Boimler down. The hunt begins.

Boimler seeks out Captain Freeman to ask her to stop the hunt. Initially, she calls for security but cancels the order when she finds out it’s K'ranch. They’d brunched earlier and she likes him a lot.

Rutherford contacts Ransom and informs him that Billups’s outie belly button has earned him a one way ticket to be sacrificed to a sentient volcano. Ransom encourages him to call for parlay.

Mariner overhears Rutherford’s distressed call and decides to head down to the planet on her own to help out. As she’s skydiving to the surface, Ransom contacts her and says they’ll go down to help the engineers since she proved him wrong and didn’t go rogue when she thought she knew better than him. He says he’ll meet her in Section Eight. Mariner halts her free fall and has to climb the lift structure in order to meet him.

Boimler hides from K'ranch in the repair bay but activates the BnB game recording. The game encourages him to attack instead of hiding.

Boimler steels his nerve and confronts K'ranch with a big speech only to get speared. As he cowers on the ground, K'ranch grabs a selfie and gives Boimler notes on being prey. He congratulates Boimler on being good prey and will let Freeman know how well the hunt went thanks to Boimler.

Exhausted, Mariner meets Ransom at the appointed time and place. He announces they’ll be skydiving down.

They arrive just as Rutherford and Billups are being thrown into the sentient volcano at the order of the psychic baby and AI co-leaders. Ransom demands parlay, demonstrating his excellent physique as a sign of his wisdom to a culture that values health and wellness.

Back on the ship, Ransom and Mariner come to an understanding.

The team resumes their game. Boimler joins them, his spear wound repaired but not totally healed. He declares himself bold forever. He rolls for bloodwine and dies dishonorably in the game. He still intends to be bold.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 Episode 2 Quotes

Boimler: No matter how careful I am, no matter how hard I try, I feel like I’m going to be an ensign for the rest of my life.
Tendi: Again, if planning and trying aren’t working, maybe don’t do that.

Ransom: We have a mission briefing. I expect you to be early.
Mariner: It doesn’t start for an hour!
Ransom: I know. You’re almost late for being early. Move it!
